2017-2018 Dance Cmpany HANDBOOK

Dance Cmpany Handbk 2017-2018 What is The Dance Crner Cmpany? The Dance Crner Cmpany is a team f dedicated dance students f different ages and experience levels, wh lve t perfrm and are lking t be challenged in class, rehearsals, perfrmances and cmpetitins. The Dance Cmpany helps dancers grw in cnfidence and cmpetence thrugh dance classes, rehearsals, cmmunity perfrmances, cmpetitins and mre! Older dancers mentr yunger dancers and all participants are part f a team f friends where everyne strives t be the best they can be. Is there rm fr a dancer like me? We ffer several ptins fr dancers. Each perfrming grup has different requirements fr time cmmitment and training. We want everyne wh wants t perfrm, t have the pprtunity t get ut there and dance. If yu maintain regular class attendance, lve t dance and wrk hard in yur dance classes Dance Cmpany is fr yu! Our Dance Cmpany is great fr yung dancers lking t perfrm mre ften and further their studies r fr thse cnsidering studying dance and perfrming arts in cllege r as a prfessinal career. Hw are dancers placed in perfrming grups? Placement in The Dance Crner s Cmpany is based n the fllwing criteria: technique, ptential, cmmitment level, enthusiasm, attitude and behavir in class and class attendance. Cmpany members are placed based n ability and technique nt n age r class level. We place students tgether in grups that we feel will wrk the best tgether in rehearsal and perfrmance. We are careful t place ur dancers where we believe they will grw the BEST. We knw each dancer wants t make a tp level grup. That gives everyne smething t strive fr, but ur first and fremst cncern is placing yur child in a grup that will build their self-esteem, challenge them and help them grw. As dance prfessinals, ur staff will place yur dancer where they fit best. Placement is determined by many factrs including ability level, wrk ethic, taking and applying crrectins, rate at which they pick up new chregraphy, musicality, flexibility and mst imprtantly the dancers verall attitude. Placing dancers in a level that is t challenging fr them nt nly hlds back the ther dancers in the grup, but can als be ptentially damaging t their wn develpment and self-esteem. We want t n nly build technically advanced dancers, but als dancers with high self-esteem, cnfidence, grace and JOY! Here are a few f the things ur staff lks fr thrughut the year when evaluating dancers readiness fr Dance Cmpany. 1. Psitive attitude in class. 2. Respect and curtesy shwn twards fellw students and teachers. 3. Gd class attendance during the last dance year (5 absences r less frm each class). 4. The ability t pick-up dance cmbinatins quickly and remember them frm week t week. 5. Strng verall technique and lines 6. The ability t take crrectins frm teachers and chregraphers and apply them t yur dancing 7. Gd psture and alignment 8. Timing and musicality 9. Pwer and strength 10. Flexibility 11. Strng expressin and presentatin while perfrming in studi and n stage

What will my child and family gain frm being a part f the Dance Cmpany? Accelerated Training: Cmpany dancers learn skills earlier, at an accelerated pace. Fcused cmpany classes give dancers mre individualized attentin frm instructrs and the pprtunity t be mtivated and challenged by their teammates. Additinal Perfrming Opprtunities: Cmpany dancers nt nly perfrm at the recital each spring, they perfrm at cmpetitins and cmmunity events and all cmpany dancers are invited t dance in ur annual recital pening number. Dance is a perfrming art, and perfrmance is the pt f gld at the end f the rainbw fr dancers. Cmpany members grw in cnfidence and shwmanship each time they perfrm, and they learn t expect the unexpected and adapt t any perfrmance venue as they share their gift f dance. TDC will ffer mre cmmunity perfrmance pprtunities fr cmpany members this seasn and encurages everyne t participate in as many f these events as they can. Additinal Learning Opprtunities: Cmpany dancers gain insight frm judge s cmments and critiques after cmpetitins. These critiques and high standard f cmpetitive dance give ur dancers the impetus t wrk hard, dream big and be the best they can be! Dancers als learn at ptinal dance cnventins and master classes ffered during the seasn. There are nt enugh pages in this bk t detail all the gd things that dancers and families gain frm being a part f ur dance cmpany. The list belw is just a handful f things yur dancer and family can lk frward t gaining frm yur experience: Cnfidence- psitive bdy image- physical fitness: strength, stamina, flexibility- expsure t different dance and teaching styles- stage experience, which builds artistry- accelerated training- enhanced ability t wrk in a grup- time management skills- independence- sense f persnal respnsibility- expsure t new experiencessprtsmanship- patience- strng wrk ethic- life lng friendships- prblem slving skills- ability t indentify nes strengths and weaknesses and a healthy attitude twards bth- scial skills- sense f belnging t a grupskills fr encuraging thers- respect fr peers and adults- creativity- setting and achieving galsunderstanding and willingness t accept cnsequences fr chices made (gd r bad!)- drive fr persnal excellence- adaptability- quick learning and retentin f material- punctuality- ability t handle success with grace- travel pprtunities fr family- becming a rle mdel- treasured memries- family friendships and SO MUCH MORE! A Family Envirnment: Cmpany dancers perfrm age apprpriate dances and enjy a sense f belnging. A psitive and encuraging family atmsphere leads ur dancers n their way t a happy, successful adulthd. Our main gal is t use dance as a vehicle t teach life lessns that will have value in any vcatin ur dancers may chse, whether they dance prfessinally r nt. Other gals include teaching them abut all aspects f perfrming, helping them becme cmfrtable experiencing new things, guiding them in learning t set and wrk intelligently twards achieving gals, and encuraging them t cmpare themselves nt t thers, but t wh they were yesterday! We believe that dance lessns teach life lessns we teach dance t nt nly create wnderful dancers, but t als teach life lessns that are invaluable t them thrughut their lives. Understanding cmmitment respnsibility, respect and time management are just a few f the values that we are instilling in ur dancers.

Attendance and Time Cmmitment Dance cmpany is a team. Just as sprts teams require all players t attend practices, dance cmpanies require their dancers t attend all classes and rehearsals. Absences will hld back nt nly the individual dancer, the cmpany as a whle. Cmpany class schedules will be sent t families in early July after the Ensemble auditins. We can t create this schedule until we knw exactly hw many dancers and cmpany grups we have. Mst cmpany classes will meet n Friday afternns/ evenings r Saturday mrnings. Each dancer is allwed up t 5 absences frm Cmpany classes and rehearsals frm September- May. A maximum f tw absences is allwed by Ensemble dancers January- March. This is the start f ur cmpetitin seasn and it is imprtant that the whle team rehearse tgether every week during these mnths. Dancers wh miss mre than 5 cmpany classes may be remved frm the Cmpany. This applies t medical absences as well as ther reasns. Dance requires cnsistent nging training, and dancers wh miss several classes due t illness r injury, r any ther reasn will nt be able t cmpete at the same level as thse wh have attended classes regularly. Attendance in required classes- required Ballet, Jazz, Tap & Lyrical r Cntemprary (see fall-spring class requirements n previus page) will als be mnitred. Dance Cmpany members may nt miss mre than 5 meetings f any ne f their required classes frm September- May. Dancers wh miss mre than 5 meetings f any ne cre class may be remved frm the Cmpany. Make up classes are available. All Cmpany members must be present in all required classes (nt just cmpany class) and rehearsals the week prir t every perfrmance and cmpetitin. Make-up classes are an ptin fr cmpany members wh must miss a required class the week prir t a cmpetitin r perfrmance. Attendance in the last Cmpany class befre a cmpetitin r perfrmance is mandatry fr all cmpany members. This is the grup s last chance t wrk ut the kinks befre hitting the stage and it is imprtant that all dancers be there. Since cmpetitins are n the weekend, cmpany classes may nt be able t meet n the cmpetitin weekend. The cmpany classes the week prir t the cmpetitin are ften the last chance grups have t rehearse befre cmpeting. If the injury r illness is expected t keep the dancer frm actively participating in class fr mre than 7 days, a parent must ntify TDC by email, phne r in persn and prvide a dctr s nte. Any extended absence effects the whle cmpany and it is imprtant that ur staff knw as much as pssible abut the dancer's prgnsis and expected return t class, s we can plan class and rehearsal time accrdingly, and make any necessary changes t chregraphy.

Summer Dance Onging training is an imprtant part f a dancer s develpment and taking 8 r mre weeks ff frm dance ver the summer stps their prgress. We want ur team t be the best and that means ur dancers shuld be training at least 11 mnths ut f the year. Plus, ur chregraphers want t have the chance t evaluate the cmpany member s strengths and weaknesses s they can start designing chregraphy that shwcases ur dancers the best. Squad and Trupe dancers are required t attend ne 30-60 minute weekly summer classes (summer sampler r summer nights), r the equivalent f 4 hurs f class time in ur intensives. Ensemble dancers are required t attend 7 hurs f summer class including ne Ballet intensive. Ensemble dancers must als attend the Perfrmance Wrkshp Auditin June 20 th -22 nd. If yu have vacatin plans r ther summer cmmitments that cnflict with this requirement, please speak with Miss Carrie abut it. Summer classes are very flexible and we can find a schedule that fulfills this requirement and fits yur family s schedule. Rehearsals and Perfrmances Weekly cmpany class is the rehearsal time fr ur dancers. We dn t require additinal rehearsal time unless there is a change in cast, chregrapher r ther extrardinary event that wuld require the grup t add extra rehearsal time. All perfrmance grups in Squad, Trupe and Ensemble meet weekly fr cmpany class frm September t May, except Prductin Ensemble. Dancers in Prductin Ensemble are required t attend a ne time blck rehearsal at the start f the Seasn. At this Prductin Palza, dancers will learn the entire dance. Since Prductin Ensemble is cmprised f many dancers f varius ages and levels, the chregraphy is brken int sectins. Dancers in each sectin f the dance will be required t attend regular mnthly 30 minute rehearsals and pssible additinal all-grup rehearsals frm September thrugh ur first cmpetitin. Since this ensemble desn t meet weekly, it is the dancers respnsibility t practice their chregraphy and retain it s they are able t walk int their rehearsals prepared and ready t dance. Pre-Cmp Rehearsal All dance cmpany grups are required t attend ur n-stage Pre-Cmp rehearsal at the Clintn Twn Hall n Friday 1/26/18. Exact time TBA. All grups will perfrm their rutines in cstume n stage. This is a dress rehearsal fr cmpetitin and it is extremely imprtant that every dancer attend. Fees are nt prrated fr missed cmpany classes and they are nt increased if rehearsals are added. Payment Schedule Cmpany fees can be paid mnthly, semi-annually r annually just like ur regular class tuitin. There are n discunts n Cmpany fees. Cstume depsits fr ensemble will be billed t yu based n yur regular dance billing cycle. One time cstume fees fr Squad and Trupe dancers are due by August 20th. These grups will need their cstumes earlier, s we will purchase them in September r sner. ENSEMBLE Cmpetitin entry fees are payable by the fllwing schedule: July- Cmmitment Depsit (nn-refundable)- $100 due upn returning cmpany cntract and cmmitting t the ensemble. We realize this is a big expense and hpe by ffering this payment schedule we will help families spread ut the expense and avid being hit by a large bill right after the hlidays.

Sls and Duets (Ensemble dancers nly) Interested Ensemble dancers may elect t enter a sl r duet in cmpetitin. Perfrming in a pair r sl takes a lt f wrk and dedicatin. ONLY serius dancers wh are self-mtivated and can cmmit t practicing n their wn shuld cnsider this. The Dance Crner staff wuld be happy t talk with yu and help yu determine if yu are ready t perfrm a sl r duet at a cmpetitin. Entry fees fr sls and duets at mst cmpetitins are $60- $120 per dancer. Sls will nly be included in The Dance Crner's annual recital if they are perfrmed by graduating senirs. Graduating senirs will perfrm their sl in ne recital perfrmance and the date f that perfrmance will be determined by a lttery. Graduating senirs in a duet r tri will nly perfrm that duet r tri in the recital if they freg their pprtunity t perfrm ne sl. As much as we wuld like all ur students t perfrm these rutines in the recital, we must keep the length f the shw in mind. If we add 6 sls, duets r tris t the recital it wuld lengthen ur 3- hur shw by 20 minutes r mre. Cmpetitins are pen t the public and family and friends are welcme t watch these perfrmances there fr free. Dancers interested in perfrming a sl, duet r tri, must be prepared t d a lt f wrk n their wn. An instructr will wrk with them t chregraph and clean the rutine, but dancers are respnsible fr practicing n their wn. Dancers are required t meet bi-weekly with their chregrapher during the cmpetitin seasn (September- May) t learn and rehearse their dance. We will schedule a private lessn day and time fr each rutine and have the dancer(s) meet with their chregrapher at that day/ time every ther week. This will be a set class time. A survey will be sent ut t students eligible fr sls r duets in May t determine each dancer s interest in perfrming a sl and/ r duet, and their desired dance style and chregrapher preference. TDC staff will use the infrmatin cllected in these surveys, alng with teacher input, t pair dancers fr duets and t assign them and all slists a chregrapher t wrk with. While we knw dancers ften want t dance with their BFF, this is nt always the mst successful pairing fr a dance rutine. We will pair duet dancers f similar skill levels wh we believe will cmpliment each ther n stage. This will give dancers the pprtunity t frm new friendships and pssibly mentr a yunger dancer. Each teacher has a limited amunt f time in their schedule fr private lessns, and we are nt always able t pair dancers with their tp chice chregrapher. We knw are dancers well and are cnfident we will partner them with a chregrapher wh will shwcase their talents. While we encurage music and cstume suggestins frm the dancers, final music and cstume chice lies with the chregrapher and Miss Carrie. Cst All Private lessns tuitin is- 30-minute class is $34 45-minute class is $51 One-hur class is $68

Cde f Cnduct A COMPETITIVE DANCERS AFFIRMATION 1. There are thse wh have danced fr many years wh will never reach the level I have. 2. There are thse wh have danced fr fewer years wh will reach the level befre I will. 3. I must nt cmpare myself t thse wh are strnger than I am, but lk at hw far I have cme and what I can still achieve. 4. I must cmpete with myself t get better, and nt thers ut f envy. 5. I must encurage and applaud thers wh share my dreams and gals. 6. I must fix the skills that need t be imprved and practice thse crrectins. 7. I must remember that the rad t accmplishment is a lng rad with many deturs, but cmmitment and perseverance will keep me heading in the right directin. 8. I must put my heart and passin int all I d, and remember that my talent is a gift t be nurtured, develped and shared. 9. Mst f all, I must take pride in what I d and BELIEVE in myself! It is imprtant that parents, students and teachers alike review and understand the cde f cnduct. These guidelines are fr the gd f ur dance family.
