CofC picked up a season opening win over Towson before going 1-2 at the Charleston Classic including a win over Boston College. The Cougars also have a win over Baylor in Waco. Baylor was ranked 21st at the time of the victory. More recently CofC lost to Division II opponent Anderson University at home but the Cougars were without the services of a few key members of their squad including preseason All-Southern Conference selection Trent Wiedeman. Wiedeman returned to the Cougar line-up this past Tuesday as he helped lead CofC to a 76-65 victory over Old Dominion. Senior Andrew Lawrence leads the team with 13.0 points per game while sophomore Adjehi Baru is averaging just under a double-double with 10.0 points and 9.9 rebounds per game. THE SERIES Coastal Carolina and the College of Charleston have met 45 times on the hardwood. The Cougars hold a 34-11 advantage in the series and have won 12 of the last 13 meetings between the two teams including a 77-70 win last season in Conway. CCU s most recent victory came during the 2009-10 season at home. Coastal has won just one time in Charleston and that came during the 1976-77 season when CCU took a 97-87 triple overtime victory over the Cougars. ON THIS DATE Coastal Carolina is 4-5 in games played on Dec. 22 including 0-3 against the College of Charleston. The Chants last meeting on Dec. 22 was last season at home against CofC. The Chants fell 77-70. CCU has played three road games on Dec. 22 and is 1-2 in those contests including a 106-104 overtime victory at Wake Forest in 1987. The most recent road contest on Dec. 22 came in 2004 at the College of Charleston. Coastal lost 87-69. GOING GREEN Coastal Carolina senior guard Kierre Greenwood became the 22nd player in Big South history with 400 career helpers on Dec. 13 as he dished out eight assists against Toccoa Falls to give himself 403 for his career. He became the third Chanticleer to make the conference s all-time list, joining Robert Dowdell (561 from 1987-91) and Alvin Green (411 from 2000-05). He now has 410 career assists. The Chanticleers outscored the Tigers 25-8 over the last 10 minutes to pull away for a convincing 69-46 victory Wednesday night before a sellout crowd of 3,286 at The HTC Center. The Chants posted their third victory over an ACC team in program history and improved to 4-5 on the season. Anthony Raffa scored a game-high 25 points on 10 of 17 shooting from the field. Warren Gillis added 12 points, including three 3-pointers, and Kierre Greenwood chipped in 10 points and seven assists. Uros Ljeskovic had a team and career-high 10 rebounds. Devin Booker scored 16 points and Jordan Roper added 12 for Clemson, which dropped to 6-4. Coastal shot 46 percent from the field in the game and made a season-high nine 3-pointers on 23 attempts. The Chanticleers also forced 18 Clemson turnovers, scoring 20 points off of them, and limited the Tigers to just 32 percent shooting. In addition, Coastal won the battle of the boards 39-32. The Chanticleers hit their first four shots to take a 10-2 lead just 2:20 into the game. Raffa made a fast-break layup and a 3-pointer from the wing and El Hadji Ndieguene converted a foul-line jumper to put the Chants ahead 7-0. After Clemson got on the board, Gillis made his first 3-pointer. However, Coastal missed its next 11 shots and the Tigers got eight points from Booker inside in a 15-4 run to take the lead at 17-14. The first half was one of runs, though, and the Chants answered with 13 straight points, while holding Clemson scoreless for more than eight and half minutes. Gillis made another 3-pointer and Coastal scored six points off of Tiger turnovers, including back-to-back layups in transition by Raffa. A short jumper in the lane by Greenwood made it 27-17 with 14 seconds left in the half. A putback by Booker at the buzzer finally ended Clemson s drought and cut the lead to eight at halftime. Prior to that basket, the Tigers had missed eight consecutive shots while committing six turnovers. The teams traded baskets through the first seven minutes of the second half, with a 3-pointer by Coastal s Badou Diagne making it 41-31 with 13:07 remaining. The Tigers trimmed the deficit back down to 44-38, but the rest of the game belonged to Coastal. Michel Enanga and Diagne each hit 3-pointers to help push the lead to 55-40 with 5:20 left. After two Clemson free throws, the Chanticleers poured it on with 14 straight points over a span of 3:05. Raffa started the spurt with a 3-pointer, Ljeskovic converted back-to-back baskets inside, Greenwood made a jumper and Raffa added another fast-break layup and three free throws. Coastal made 13 of 24 shots (54 percent) in the second half. By the time the Tigers finally scored again, less than two minutes remained. The 46 points was their lowest offensive output of the season. LEADING THE WAY Senior Anthony Raffa has led the team in scoring in eight of the nine contests this season. Last season he led the team in scoring 15 of the 31 games played. He opened the season by leading the team in six-straight games. The streak was the longest Raffa has had in leading the team in scoring. It is the longest streak at Coastal since the end of the 2003-04 season when E.J. Gallup led the team in scoring for seven straight contests. RAFFA NAMED BIG SOUTH PLAYER OF THE WEEK Senior guard Anthony Raffa was named the Big South Conference Choice Hotels Men s Basketball Player of the Week, the league announced on Monday, Nov. 12. The honor was Raffa s first weekly honor in a Coastal uniform and it was the first Player of the Week honor for a Coastal men s basketball player since Feb. 7, 2011, when Desmond Holloway was given the award. Raffa had a tremendous game in Coastal s debut in The HTC Center. He tallied 27 points, eight rebounds and two steals and hit a pair of clutch 3-pointers in the 74-70 overtime victory over Akron. He single-handedly recorded a 5-0 run to open up the second half and retake the lead from the Zips, as Coastal was previously ahead at the 8:20 mark of the first half. With less than three minutes to play in the game, Raffa hit a 3-pointer to make it a two-possession game. In overtime, Raffa once again delivered from deep to extend the Coastal lead to four, then nailed a three with 1:06 to play to push the Chanticleer advantage to five. Raffa added a free throw with two seconds left in overtime to give CCU the final margin. RAFFA AND GREENWOOD NAMED PRESEASON ALL-CONFERENCE Senior guard Anthony Raffa was named first team Preseason All-Big South while senior point guard Kierre Greenwood was selected to the second team. Raffa returns after a junior season in which he led the team scoring with 16.7 points per game. He was named second team all-conference and second team all-district by the NABC last season. Greenwood is coming off the best season of his career where he led the team in assists and was third in scoring. He averaged 11.1 points per game last season while dishing out 5.0 assists per contest. IT S RAINING THREES The Chanticleers have a had at least one 3-pointer in 34-straight games dating back to Dec. 3, 2011. VMI was the last team to hold the Chants without a three as Coastal went 0-9 from 3-point range Dec. 1, 2011. Big South Regular Season Championships: 1988*1989*1990*1991*2010*2011
