The Starting Five - Liberty s Top Storylines 1) Liberty will attempt to bounce back from a 98-38 season-opening setback to Duke. The task does not get any easier for the Lady Flames on Tuesday, as James Madison is favored to capture its fourth consecutive CAA title this season. 2) Liberty has made 16 NCAA Tournament appearances in the last 20 years. Meanwhile, James Madison has qualifi ed for the NCAA Tournament fi ve times in the last seven seasons, including each of the last three years in a row. 3) The Lady Flames have won 15 of their last 16 meetings with in-state opponents. The lone Commonwealth setback during that time was a 72-56 loss at James Madison last season (Nov. 23, 2015). 4) Liberty has uncharacteristically lost back-to-back home games, dating back to last season, having won 79.5 percent of its contests at the Vines Center all-time. The Lady Flames will look to halt that losing skid and snap James Madison s eight-game road winning streak in the process. 5) The new-look Lady Flames saw seven players make their Liberty debuts during the Duke game. Liberty started three freshmen (Keyen Green, Ola Makurat and Lela Sellers) in the season opener for the fi rst time in 20 years. Liberty s Possible Starters (Based Upon Previous Game) No. Name Pos. Carey Green lost a 60-45 contest at Virginia Tech in his debut as Liberty s head coach on Nov. 15, 1999 and the Lady Flames dropped a 52-47 home decision to VCU on Nov. 15, 2011. CAA Clashes James Madison is the lone CAA opponent on Liberty s 2016-17 season schedule. The Lady Flames were 1-1 against the CAA last season, recording a 72-63 home win over Elon on Nov. 16 and suffering a 72-56 defeat at James Madison seven days later. Competing Against the Commonwealth Liberty went 5-1 against in-state opponents last season and is 15-1 in its last 16 contests against Commonwealth foes. The Lady Flames lone setback during that stretch was their 72-56 loss at James Madison on Nov. 23, 2015. Liberty is scheduled to play six games against Virginia foes in 2016-17, including James Madison (Tuesday), Richmond (Dec. 3), Longwood (Jan. 17 and Feb. 21) and Radford (Jan. 24 and Feb. 7). Three of a Kind Three true freshmen (Keyen Green, Ola Makurat and Lela Sellers) started during Friday s season opener against Duke. It marked the fi rst time since 1996-97 that three Liberty freshmen (Jennifer Jess, Elena Kisseleva and Sarah Wilkerson) earned the starting nod in their collegiate debuts. Unfamiliar Role Liberty was picked fourth in the Big South preseason poll, as voted upon by the conference s head coaches. This is the fi rst time since 1996-97 (seventh place) that the Lady Flames have been listed outside the top two in the preseason poll. The 1996-97 Lady Flames went on to capture the fi rst Big South championship in program history. This is also the fi rst time since 2009-10 that Liberty is not represented on the Big South preseason all-conference team. That season, Devon Brown and Avery Warley were fi rst team All-Big South performers at the end of the year.

Duke scored the most points ever by a visiting team at the Vines Center and became just the third opponent in the last 98 games to shoot 50 percent or better (52.2 percent, 36-of-69) from the fi eld against the Lady Flames. After taking an early 18-14 lead, Liberty (0-1) turned ice cold from the fl oor. The new-look Lady Flames fi nished the game at 20.8 percent (11-of-53) from the fi eld and 5.9 percent (1-of-17) from three-point range. The game was played before a crowd of 3,741, which marked the eighth-largest women s basketball crowd in Vines Center history and the largest since Dec. 14, 2002. Liberty owned an 18-14 advantage with 2:24 to play in the fi rst quarter, before Duke took the lead for good with a 12-0 run. Molly Reagan equaled her career high of nine points and tied for team-high scoring honors with Ola Makurat, one of three freshmen to start for the Lady Flames. Sheana Vega pulled down a team-high four rebounds, while Lela Sellers dished out three assists. Big Shoes to Fill Five seniors graduated from last year s team, including Katelyn Adams, Sadalia Ellis, Jaymee Fisher-Davis, Catherine Kearney and Ashley Rininger. Adams, Kearney and Rininger each stand 6-4 or taller. The Lady Flames won 117 games in fi ve years (Katelyn Adams, Catherine Kearney and Ashley Rininger s time on campus), including three Big South titles and three NCAA Tournament appearances. The Lady Flames fi ve seniors totaled 4,260 career points and 2,829 career rebounds. Big Shoes to Fill, Part 2 In total, Liberty lost 90.6 percent of its scoring from the 2015-16 season. Current Lady Flames had started fi ve career games entering the 2016-17 season, including three starts by Audrey Rettstatt and two by Sheana Vega. Rettstatt is the only player on this year s team who has ever scored in double fi gures, while Barbour is the only Lady Flame with a double-digit rebounding game to her credit. New Kids on the Block Eight Lady Flames are set to make their debut in a Liberty uniform this season, including one junior (Nene Johnson) and seven freshmen (Kaila Ballard, Keyen Green, Iva Ilic, Kierra Johnson-Graham, Ola Makurat, Lela Sellers and Kaitlyn Stovall). One of a Kind Audrey Rettstatt is the lone senior on the Lady Flames 2016-17 roster. This is the second time in four seasons that Liberty has had only one senior. Jasmine Gardner was the team s lone senior in 2013-14. International Flavor This year s roster includes two foreign-born freshmen, including Iva Ilic (Croatia) and Ola Makurat (Poland). They are Liberty s fi rst international players since Jelena Antic of Macedonia wrapped up her time with the Lady Flames in 2010-11.
