ORRVILLE YMCA Natatorium Project
OUR MISSION To put Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind and body for all. OUR PROMISE No one will be turned away from the YMCA due to an inability to pay. OUR GOAL Our goal at the Orrville YMCA is to ensure that Orrville has a swimming pool to serve the community. The pool is 22 years old and all of the equipment is original. This renovation will help us replace broken down equipment, replace damaged doors and windows, and upgrade to more efficient lighting and equipment; all to ensure the pool at the YMCA is around for future generations of children, adults, families and seniors in our community. OUR NEED The natatorium and all of the control equipment for the pool water and temperature quality are now 22 years old. A few years ago the dehumidification unit broke down and is now beyond repair. This has caused humidity to build in the natatorium. High humidity in the enclosed area has started to affect the structural and mechanical elements of the pool area. Condensation on windows has caused operation issues and unsightly stains. The same has happened with doors leading to the locker rooms as well as exterior doors. Unsightly rust stains running down the walls are another outcome of water build up in the area. The swim team scoreboard that was donated needs to be protected before it is affected by the moisture build up. Equally as important, high humidity affects the people using the natatorium. Swim team practice or meets will sometimes see hundreds of swimmers and spectators where the high humidity makes it difficult to breathe. Now think of the lifeguards who spend hours on deck keeping swimmers safe. Our largest population of users are our seniors who need the pool for exercise and humidity makes it miserable for them too.
COMMUNITY IMPACT What does the YMCA pool mean to the community? It means access to recreational activities that span a lifetime. Youth learning how to swim, families bonding while playing in the water or adults and seniors improving their health by exercising or swimming laps. SWIMMING LESSONS from six weeks old in our water babies class to adults taking private lessons to finally learn how to swim on their own. SWIM TEAM for youth who want to learn courage and self-confidence. Providing the opportunity to join a team and learn cooperation, dependability and sportsmanship. GROUP EXERCISE class to increase endurance and improve strength in a low impact environment RECREATIONAL USE by using lap lanes available throughout the day and open swim times to enjoy the water alone or with friends and family. COMMUNITY COLLABORATIONS The Orrville YMCA partners with community organizations to provide aquatic programming to many in our community. ORRVILLE CITY SCHOOLS partner with the YMCA in two ways. In the Spring, fourth Grade Swim Lessons remind and teach youth safety in and around water. This helps the children with a refresher before vacation season and reminds them of water safety techniques in a fun way. The High School Swim Team practices and competes at the YMCA every November through February. ONSITE THERAPY SOLUTIONS relocated their office to the Orrville YMCA and has added aqua-therapy to its services. The YMCA has allowed us to increase our scope of practice and be the first physical therapy clinic in Orrville to offer aquatic therapy. We are also able to transition our patients into an indepth exercise program here at the YMCA in order for them to continue progressing towards their goals on an independent level. We are very pleased to have partnered with the YMCA to further assist our patients. - Angela Marmet, Co-Owner Onsite Therapy Solutions
PROJECT COMPONENTS PROJECT TIMELINE First things first. The project will happen in two phases. Phase 1: Dehumidification Unit / Duct Sock The dehumidification unit affects every other component in the pool so must be done first. In order to save money, this repair will be done when the money has been collected to avoid financing charges. Pool Dehumidification Unit to control the humidity inside the natatorium and protect the structural integrity of the ceiling and walls; protect against damage to our scoreboard, lighting, windows, doors and floor Windows and Doors to replace damaged units and maintain a good seal around openings to help the dehumidification unit work effectively Lighting to improve the energy efficiency and visibility for lifeguards, instructors, and patrons in the pool Pool Mechanicals to improve operational effectiveness in maintaining pool chemistry and ADA compliance Painting, Patching & Sealing of the walls and floors to improve the aesthetics of the natatorium Phase 2: Windows and Doors Lighting and Electrical Mechanical Ceiling, Wall and Floor Restoration With the climate controlled, repairs to the structure and amenities will not be subject to condensation and will be able to work efficiently. OUR PROGRESS The Orrville YMCA has received two grants for this project. The George T Dunlap Community Foundation grant for $25,000 has been received. The Wayne County Community Foundation has awarded a Matching Grant to the YMCA. That means the Y must raise $75,000 before May 1, 2018 and then the Wayne County Community Foundation will match it for a total of $150,000 via this opportunity.

Teaching children how to swim and be safe around water is one of the most important life skills parents can help their children learn. It not only saves lives; it builds confidence Research shows that participation in formal water safety and swim lessons can reduce the risk of drowning among children 1 to 4 years of age. Participation in swimming helps teach children at a young age to strive for physical achievement. Water safety and swim lessons promote a lifelong enjoyment of swimming, and encourage healthy living and the prevention of chronic disease. Add Learning How to Swim to Your Child s List of Basic Life Skills.

I enjoy the swimming, plus it is great exercise. When I was diagnosed with Type II diabetes, I learned that exercise, low stress, keeping track of carbs, testing and insulin are the main vehicles to help keep my glucose under control. Swimming helps relieve stress and provides the necessary exercise. I appreciate the fact that lap lanes are set aside in the pool, and are available morning and afternoon, which allows me to do 20 laps 3 days per week. I usually go in the morning, but sometimes when my schedule does not permit AM swimming I know that I can go in the afternoon. Thanks for having the pool open all year round.
