If a problem arises contact us before disposing of the bull. All claims must be verified by a veterinarian. Normal care needs to be exercised for any animal purchased and that bulls not be allowed to get too thin. Buyers of yearling bulls should not mix or use them with older bulls in order to reduce the risk of injury. Yearling bulls should be semen tested before using them the first time. Gunbarrel Ranch J&N Ranch F. Morgan Feedyard Decker Farm Our 29th Production Sale features the complete dispersal of all our 5 & 6 year old registered Black Hereford cows and all the Black Hereford herd bulls we used last spring. This is an opportunity to purchase some highly proven young cows in their prime with most of their productive life ahead of them. They have survived our culling process and represent the best of our performance based breeding program. These herd sires have been used in our registered and commercial herds and are the latest genetics used in our herd. We only use a bull one breeding season in natural pasture service. We do this in order to turn the generations as quickly as possible and advance our selection process. We are selling full possession and full semen sale rights in each bull unless otherwise stated or announced on sale day. We will retain a ¼ interest in each bull for our own in-herd use. All of our commercial bred heifers are F1 Hereford- Angus cross females born in 2017 and come from some of our customers and reputation herds in Kansas. We are also offering 20 bred females we raised and registered in the ABHA. They are safe in calf to the homozygous black bull, JN Balder DY3. Their calves are guaranteed to be black and qualify for registration in the ABHA. All of the registered cattle in this sale are recorded in the ABHA. Registration transfers in the American Black Hereford Association are included in the purchase price. Thank you for your interest in our breeding program. BLACK HEREFORDS GENOMICALLY ENHANCED EXPECTED PROGENY DIFFERENCES (EPDs) These EPDs are based on a multi-breed analysis by IGS, the largest beef genetic evaluation system in the world, then adjusted to a Black Hereford base as calculated by Dr. David Riley of Texas A&M University and Dr. Lauren Hana of North Dakota State University for the traits they measure. All other traits are evaluated directly from the multi-breed analysis combining performance records from 12 breed associations and J&N Ranch. Updated weekly, we use BOLT software to incorporate genomic data from each cow in our herd combined with traditional data evaluations to increase our EPD prediction accuracy. An EPD is the difference in expected performance of future progeny of an individual, compared with expected performance of future progeny of an individual of average genetic merit. They are reported in units of measurement for each trait (e.g. lbs., cm, etc.) The data used in this analysis is based on up to 17 generations of J & N breeding and thousands of head of cattle measured over 40 years of performance testing for growth, maternal and carcass traits. PRODUCTION : Calving Ease Direct (CE): Predict the average difference in ease with which a sire s calves will be born when bred to firstcalf heifers. Expressed as percentage of unassisted births with a higher value indicating greater calving ease. Birth Weight EPD (BW): BW EPDs are expressed in pounds and predict the average difference that can be expected in an animal s offspring when compared with another animal in the same genetic evaluation. Birth weight EPDs are primarily used as an indicator of calving ease, with the age and size of the females to be bred usually dictating how much birth weight can be tolerated. Weaning Weight EPD (WW): EPDs are expressed in pounds and predict the average differences in weight that can be expected between the progeny of animals in the same genetic evaluation at 205 days of age. Weaning Weight EPDs do not account for differences in weaning weight that are due to milk. Yearling Weight EPD (YW): YW EPDs are expressed in pounds and predict the average differences that can be expected between the progeny of animals at one year of age. Docility EPD (DOC): Docility EPDs predict the percentage of an animal s offspring that are expected to score favorably (1 or 2) on a five-point system when compared to the offspring of another animal. Expressed in EPDs as a percentage with higher values being favorable. MATERNAL Maternal Calving Ease EPD (MCE): Predict the average ease with which a sire s daughters will calve as first-calf heifers when compared to the daughters of another sire in the same evaluation. Expressed as percentage of unassisted births. Maternal Milk EPD (MM): Milk EPDs are expressed as pounds of calf weaned by a bull s daughters. They reflect the average differences in weaning weight that can be expected in grand progeny due to the milking October 13, 2018 ability of a bull s daughters. Available feed resources will dictate the extent to which milking ability should be selected. Maternal Weaning Weight EPD (MWW): Total Maternal EPDs are expressed as pounds of calf weaned by an animal s daughters. They account for average differences that can be expected from both weaning weight direct as well as from milk, and measure a sire s ability to transmit milk production and growth rate through his daughters. CARCASS Carcass Weight EPD (CW): CW EPDs estimate average differences in carcass weight, expressed in pounds at a given age endpoint. Yield Grade EPD (YG): Predict the average differences in cutability that can be expected between the progeny of animals at a given age endpoint. As with all EPDs, YG is expressed as a deviation. Negative values are desirable. To use it, one must keep in mind that it is in yield grade units. Therefore, lower is better. For example, a bull with a -.33 YG EPD would be expected to sire offspring that are 1/3 of yield grade better (lower) than a zero bull. If zero bulls sired an average yield of 3.0 in a particular environment and management system, offspring of a -.33 bull would be expected to have an average yield grade of 2.67 (1/3 of a yield grade better/lower.) Marbling EPD (MAR): Predict the average difference in USDA Quality Grade in an animal s progeny when compared to the progeny of another animal at a given age endpoint. Expressed in numerical marbling score where one point equals one USDA marbling score. Backfat EPD (BF): Estimate the average differences that are expected in external fat thickness at the 12th and 13th rib between progeny of different animals. Expressed in inches at a given age endpoint. Ribeye Area EPD (RE): Predict the average difference in ribeye area in an animal s progeny when compared to the progeny of another animal at a given age endpoint. Expressed in square inches. SELECTION INDEXES Though EPDs allow for the comparison of genetic levels for many economically important traits, they only provide a piece of the economic puzzle. That s where indexes come in. Through rigorous mathematical computation, $ indexes blend EPDs and economics to estimate an animal s overall impact on your bottom line. The same technology that led to the dramatic progress in swine, poultry and dairy genetics over the last several decades was used to develop the following $ indexes. All Purpose Index (API): Evaluates sires for use on the entire cow herd (bred to both Angus first-calf heifers and mature Angus cows) with the portion of their daughters required to maintain herd size retained and the remaining heifers and steers put on feed and sold grade and yield. Terminal Index (TI): Evaluates sires for use on mature Angus cows with all offspring put on feed and sold grade and yield. Consequently, maternal traits such as milk, stayability, and maternal calving ease are not considered in this index. 1

These Black Hereford and F1 heifers were raised by us, some of our customers, and some are from the Carswell-Nichols Production Sale last January. In the 1970s we bought heifers from Harold Carswell and today we buy them from his grandson. This group of heifers have all been pelvic-sized and bred to easy calving Black Hereford bulls. Based on past experience, you can expect 95 to 98% of these heifers to calve without assistance. They begin calving in mid-february. They have all been confirmed safe in calf.
