CHOICES VOICES Issue 102 September... 2018 Day & Residential Happenings September Project God s Eyes Originate from the Huichol Indians of Mexico s Sierra Madre. The Huichol bring flowers, arrows, feathers, prayer bowls, god s eye (tsikuri), and other symbolic gifts to deities in sacred caves in the hope of the return of favor and protection. The Huichol not only make wonderfully colorful God s Eyes from yarn, they also make yarn paintings by gluing yarn to wooden boards in nature-inspired shapes. SUPPLIES: Yarn in several bright colors Popsicle/craft sticks or small twigs Scissors Glue Optional: Variegated yarn, beads or feathers DIRECTIONS Step 1: Project Preparation If you are using twigs, they will need a little preparation. Use small twigs that are about ¼ in diameter. Remove any loose bark from the twigs and make sure they have no weak spots that might break. Cut the twigs to 6-8 lengths. Depending upon how much time is available for the craft, you might also want to do the gluing step ahead of time. Step 2: Glue Glue two sticks or twigs together in a cross. Use strong white glue like Elmer s. Let glue dry. This may take several minutes. EDITOR - BRENT BESHEARS Step 3: Select Yarn While the glue is drying, sort through the yarn and select three or four colors for your God s Eye. Pick colors that go well together, and try to include some light colors and dark colors. Step 4: Wrap Yarn Take one color of yarn and wrap it over and around one stick, then on a diagonal to the next stick and over and around it, on the diagonal to the next stick and over and around it, and so on. Continue for four or more turns around the cross, until the eye is as large as you want. Catch the tail of the yarn as you wrap, so it is held in place. Tie a length of another color of yarn onto the first one with a tight knot. Wrap the yarn around the arms of the cross as before. Make as many turns around the cross as you like to form a narrow or wide band of this color. Repeat for each additional color until finished. Tip: It s also fun to make God s Eyes with variegated yarn. For younger children, you can just use a single variegated yarn and avoid the need to tie on other colors. Step 5: Finish the God s Eye Glue the final yarn end to the back of the cross to hold it in place. Make a hanger for the God s Eye with a length of yarn glued or tied to the sticks. You might also add some decorations: tie on some feathers, add a tassel made from yarn, or attach a string of beads. Use your imagination! That s it! Your God s eye is done! Upcoming activities September 27th we will be going to Abilene to ride the train. It costs $15 and the bus will be leaving Choices at 9:00 sharp! The train takes off at 10:00 and runs for 1.5 hrs. Please bring a sack lunch to eat in the park after the ride. We will be arriving back home at the usual time. Choices Network, Inc. Lawn and Maintenance Crew There will be a Choices Network staff appreciation day on October 16th from 12PM to 7PM. Please come out to enjoy the food and companionship. There are also plans for a Spirit Week in October. Check the October newsletter for details. Picnic planned for September 14th at Bennington Lake Choices day and residential services will be going to Bennington Lake for a fun day of games, fishing and food. (If you plan on fishing, please bring your gear and fishing license.) Choices will be providing hotdogs and buns, water and condiments (If you would like something besides hotdogs, you are welcome to bring your own meat and staff will cook it.) Side dishes will be provided by Choices residential homes. The bus will be leaving for the lake at 9:30am. All vehicles will be caravanning together. We will be back in town by 2:00 with drop off at homes to follow. If you plan to attend please contact Jamie Davis at 785-820-8018. NASCAR Fun Day A trip is being planned to attend the NASCAR fun day on October 19th in Kansas City. The cost for admission will be $30.00. The bus will be leaving at 7:00 AM sharp and will return at approximately 5:30. You will need to bring a sack lunch and extra money for snacks. They will not be stopping on the return trip for dinner. There will be limited space on the bus. If you are interested in participating please contact Jamie Davis by October 13th at 785-820-8018 to secure your seat on the bus. It will be first come, first served for this event. Call now if you plan to go. Holiday activities Parade of Lights We are planning to have a holiday float again this year in the Parade of Lights. The parade is scheduled for November 17th. Watch our newsletter for more information on how you can participate. Pie Day We are planning on another pie day on November 19th from 12pm to 1pm at Choices Network, Inc. Come out and enjoy pie and conversation. Choices Network, Inc. Holiday open house will be at Choices on December 14th from 11am to 1pm. There will be treats, activities and plenty of conversation. SPOTLIGHT: CORRECTION TO THE AUGUST NEWSLETTER: SPOTLIGHT FOR BREND MOG: It was reported that Brenda volunteered for the American Cancer Association however, it was actually the Ellsworth County Cancer Fund. The money with this organization stays in the county and helps cancer patients locally. This year there were a total of twelve individuals in Choices Day & Residential Services that participated in the 2018 Tri-Rivers Fair. They had art exhibits that varied from sun catchers to colored pencil drawings. The entries were set up on Wednesday the 8th and judging was later that afternoon. We were thrilled to learn that we had seven first place awards, four second place and one third place. Everyone worked hard on their art projects and had the satisfaction of knowing their work was recognized with beautiful ribbons and a check from the fair board! Amika won a first place blue ribbon for her free hand art illustration Nature Poster. Bonnie s color pencil art work of a iguana which received a red ribbon! Karl s entry named The Hidden Garden and his Blue ribbon! Sharon entered this painting of Piglet which won her second place and a red ribbon! Tyler had a very unusual mock skeleton of a dinosaur that got him a first place blue! Tyler assembled this entire project from a kit of small pieces. Zach worked very hard on producing this colossal capital war space ship! It was made of various materials and a unique exhibit. He received first place blue! Nea s barn yard miniature that included farm animals, buildings, fences and trees! She received a beautiful white satin ribbon. Nick made a poster of his favorite NASCAR driver: Dale Jr., and his wife Amy and their new daughter. He received second place and a red ribbon. PAGE 4

Not only does asparagus add a load of heart healthy nutrition to the plate it also scores high on flavor. The preparation time is short and the results are savory. Your plain old pasta salad just had a grade A transformation. Go green! Ingredients For 8 people 1/2 cup(s) olive oil 32 ounce(s) asparagus, cut into 1-inch pieces 2 tablespoon(s) garlic powder 2 tablespoon(s) onion powder 16 ounce(s) penne, cooked and drained 2 tablespoon(s) dried rosemary 2 teaspoon(s) seasoned salt 1/2 cup(s) mayonnaise Directions In a large saucepan, bring 4 cups of water to a boil for 1 minute. Add asparagus; cover and boil 3 minutes longer. Drain and immediately place in ice water; drain and pat dry. Cook pasta according to package directions; drain and combine with asparagus. In a jar with a tight-fitting lid, combine remaining ingredients; shake well. Drizzle over salad and toss to coat. Top with shredded parmesan cheese. Chill or serve immediately. You can substitute the asparagus with green beans, lima beans, carrots, colorful peppers, use your imagination! We didn t have any food critiques from last month s recipe. Consumer Corner This group had great success with completing their goal for Mall walking. They set a goal to visit the Sedgwick County Zoo in Wichita but had to walk the distance between Salina and the zoo, which was 92miles. Mission Accomplished!!!!!
