Women s Basketball Head Coach Nancy Wilson Nancy Wilson, who won her 500th career game against Georgia Southern Feb. 16, 2009, returned to take over as head women s basketball coach at the College of Charleston on March 27th, 2003. She is now in her 15th season with the Cougars. Wilson, 57, returned to the College of Charleston and became the sixth head coach in women s basketball history after having served as its head coach from 1976-84. The Lake City, S.C. native spent the previous four years as a professor in the school s Physical Education department. The 2008-09 team completed its most successful season in Division I history, earning a record 23 overall wins, as well as a record 14 league wins. Coach Wilson won her 500th game to become the 24th active Division I coach to reach the 500- win milestone. The Cougars also won a record nine games in a row. Charleston advanced to the Southern Conference tournament championship for the first time ever and fell to Western Carolina in a record three overtimes. Charleston upset Chattanooga in the semifinals, snapping a 17-game losing streak to the Mocs. Deidra Jones, Jade Hughes and Tonia Gerty earned All-Tournament honors. Gerty also earned All-Conference honors, with Hughes winning the Ann Lashley Inspiration Award. The Cougars finished the 2007-08 season 14-16 overall and 9-9 in the Southern Conference. Charleston earned the #5 seed for the Southern Conference tournament and earned a first round bye for the first time. The Cougars defeated Georgia Southern to earn their first trip to the tournament semi-finals, falling to eventual tournament champion Chattanooga. Charleston was just one conference win away from matching its most wins in league play. The 10 earned in the 2004-05 season is the most for the team. The 14 overall wins were the most since winning 15 in the 2004-05 season. Charleston finished the year ranked 38th in the nation in scoring defense and 21st in field goal percentage defense. In 2006-07, Charleston started 5-2 in the league, its best since the 2000-01 season. The Cougars led the league in scoring defense and field goal percentage defense and were second in blocked shots. Jade Hughes finished in the top 10 in the league in scoring and led in assists. Erika Smith made

Women s Basketball her mark as well, finishing in the top 10 in the SoCon in rebounds. Melissa Chambers finished seventh in the CofC Division I record books for career assists. Wilson earned her 450th career win during the 2005-06 season with the 59-50 win over Wofford. The Cougars finished the season with a close 66-63 loss to Furman in the SoCon Tournament first round. Charleston ended the season strong defensively, ranked fifth in the league in scoring defense and second in field goal percentage defense. That win also gave the College of Charleston its fourth straight tournament first round win. The Cougars closed out the regular season winning five of their last seven contests. The team also finished the season second in the conference in scoring defense first in threepoint field goal percentage defense. They also finished second blocked shots and steals. In her first year back at the helm for the Cougars, Wilson team compiled a 7-22 record, advancing to the Southern Conference tournament quarterfinals for the third straight year, showing signs of a return to form at the close of the 2003-04 season. Wilson became the Cougars head coach in 1976 and led the women s basketball program to national prominence with seven 20-plus win seasons and three AIAW Division II national championship runners-up from 1980-82. She was also named South Carolina s Coach-of-the-Year on three occasions, while sharing National Coach-of-the-Year honors in 1982. Wilson still ranks as the winningest women s basketball coach at the College of Charleston with a.717 (215-814) percentage. While coaching basketball, Wilson also served as head volleyball coach and sported a 286-129 (.689)

Women s Basketball mark over 10 seasons, taking her team to nationals on four occasions, finishing as high as 10th. After eight years at the College of Charleston, Wilson became the University of South Carolina s fifth head coach beginning with the 1984-85 season. Over a 10-year period, the Lady Gamecocks won five Metro Conference regularseason titles and three Metro Tournament Championships. Wilson s squad made five trips to the NCAA tournament and recorded 20- plus wins four of those years. In 1988, Wilson took her team to the NCAA Tournament second round and in 1990 took the Gamecocks to the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16. In 1984, her first year with the Gamecocks, Wilson was named Metro Conference Coach-of-the-Year. Wilson left USC with a 231-149 record and as the winningest coach in the history of the program. Due to Wilson s success at USC, in 1992 she was named the head coach of the USA Women s Junior National Team in the Pan-American Basketball Confederation Junior World Championship Qualifying Tournament. Her squad won the silver medal and qualified for the 1993 Women s Junior World Championship, which was held in Seoul, South Korea. The north squad at the 1985 National Sports Festival in Baton Rouge, La., was also coached by Wilson. She also led the Athletes in Action to a 13-1 record on a tour of Japan, the Philippines and Taiwan. After graduating from Lake City High (S.C.), Wilson earned her bachelor s degree in physical education from Coker College in 1973. She then obtained her master s degree in Physical Education from The Citadel in 1982. She began her coaching career as an assistant to the College of Charleston while teaching elementary physical education at Mt. Pleasant Academy.
