Elementary Physical Education Level K-2 - Unit : LOCOMOTOR Skills Standards- All lessons in this unit are aligned to the NYS Physical Education Standards, as well as Common Core Learning Standards for Career and Technical & Technical Subjects. New York Standards Standard 1 - Personal Health and Fitness Students will have the necessary knowledge and skills to establish and maintain physical fitness, participate in physical activity, and maintain personal health. Standard 2 - A Safe and Healthy Environment Students will acquire the knowledge and ability necessary to create and maintain a safe and healthy environment. Standard 3 - Resource Management Students will understand and be able to manage their personal and community resources. National Standards Standard 1 - The physically literate individual demonstrates competency in a variety of motor skills and movement patterns. Standard 2 - The physically literate individual applies knowledge of concepts, principles, strategies and tactics related to movement and performance. Standard 3 - The physically literate individual demonstrates the knowledge and skills to achieve and maintain a health-enhancing level of physical activity and fitness. Standard 4 - The physically literate individual exhibits responsible personal and social behavior that respects self and others. Standard 5 - The physically literate individual recognizes the value of physical activity for health, enjoyment, challenge, selfexpression and/or social interaction. Main Idea: The intent is to help students learn a variety of fundamental locomotor skills modified into more specialized patterns so they can later be used in sport or activity.
Essential Questions: How will locomotor skills help me to develop physical fitness? What are some ways I can move from one point to another? How many ways can you move from one point to another? How are the gallop and side step similar? What cues can you give for the side slide? Running? Etc. How can you move at different levels/pathways/spaces/relationships/efforts? What are some strategies you can use to be successful at chasing, fleeing, and dodging? Time Frame Unit will last 4 weeks in duration (6-8 lessons) Each lesson should last approximately 30 minutes Specific Standards / Performance Indicators CCLS: RL.K.4 RL.1.2, 1.4, 1.6 Resources /Materials Shape America Common Core Learning Standards Books: Jonathan and His Mommy by Irene Smalls Hide and Snake by Keith Baker Children Moving by Graham Charts Vocabulary worksheet Word Wall or vocabulary chart Movement pictures Coloring sheets Cones or markers, whistle, music, speaker, computer

Perform locomotor skills while demonstrating proper mechanics Travel in straight, curved, and zigzag pathways. Jump over a stationary rope several times in succession while maintaining balance. Performs jumping and landing using forward and back and side-to-side movement patterns. (horizontally and vertically) Apply locomotor movements learned into different physical activities/games. Roll smoothly in a forward direction, without stopping or hesitating emphasing a rounded form. Land on both feet after taking off on one foot and on both feet. Jump a swinging rope held by others. Perform locomotor skills using a developed pattern Demonstrate 2 of the 5 critical elements for jumping and landing in a horizontal plane using 2-foot take offs and landing
Jump for distance, landing on both feet and bending the hips, knees, and ankles to reduce the impact force Skip and leap, using mature patterns Runs with a mature pattern Travels showing differentiation between jogging and sprinting Demonstrate 4 of 5 critical elements for jumping and landing in a horizontal plane using a variety of 1 and 2 foot take offs and landings. Demonstrate 4 of 5 critical elements for jumping and landing in a vertical plane Skills: Walking, jogging, running, gallop, skip, leap, hop, jump horizontally, jumping vertically Higher Order Questions What sport would use the side slide and shuffle? What sport uses jogging rather than running and explain your answer? What are some different ways to flee or dodge? When would it be appropriate to use different locomotor movements?
