Newsletter August, 2017 The VOLLEY Welcome to the August, 2017 edition of The Volley! Membership Our membership has grown again and is now up to 175! This is the highest it has been for quite a few years. We must be doing something right! Social Events Items of note M ship fees due by 30 th Sept to qualify for 10% discount Oct 14th NW Tennis League pennant starts Jazz Night in July Georgina Harvey and her team again delighted all who attended the Jazz night at the Club in late July. This was the first time we had used the new deck curtains and combined with some carpet pieces which were laid on the deck and 3 portable gas heaters, the deck area was converted to quite a comfortable, cosy area to sit and enjoy the ambiance. An extra speaker was positioned on the deck as well so the music and singing could easily be heard. The decorations were wonderful as usual and a big thank you must be extended to Jane Harris and all who helped to make this annual event a success again this year.
Club improvements The Club has endorsed an updated Strategic Plan for the next few years. Work around our facility has been prioritised and will be done as and when funds are available. The first priority is to extend the deck on the western side of the Clubhouse and include disabled access onto the deck via a concrete path along the back of the Clubhouse. This work will commence in late October this year. Other priorities are Resurfacing courts 7, 8 and 9 Replacing the roof on the Clubhouse Upgrading the mens and womens toilets and changerooms Upgrading the hitting wall And a number of other smaller projects to improve the facilities A working bee was held recently at the club and a band of about 6 people turned up. Tasks achieved included removal of tea tree regrowth from around the north-eastern corner of the courts, a clean-out of the men s changerooms which had become pretty untidy, the installation of storage brackets for the carpet rolls acquired for use on the deck and the installation of a barrier to stop people from walking over gravel before entering Court 2 soles of shoes were picking up small stones and ending up in the synthetic grass which is not good for this surface. The Committee would ask that all players stick to the paths provided to access the courts. Tennis news North West Tennis League As seen in last Saturday s Advocate, Crowe Howarth have come on board to provide much appreciated sponsorship of the new NW Tennis League competition. This competition will be between 4 Tennis Clubs along the Coast, namely Devonport, Ulverstone, Burnie and Somerset- Wynyard. Initially it will involve 6 Saturdays commencing on Oct 14 th and finishing on either 2 nd Dec or 9 th Dec depending on whether or not there is a washout on one of the other nominated Saturdays. There will be two Gala days; one at Burnie and one at Devonport which will be the final on 2 nd or 9 th Dec. There will be matches played at all 4 clubs so that all clubs have a chance to earn some much needed funds through food and bar trade. This is a trial at this stage, but it is a major step in the right direction to get inter-club competitive tennis happening again on the Coast. Well done to Gray and others at the BTC who have put this together. Crowe Howarth have committed for 3 years, so it is up to the clubs now to make sure it works. Annual General Meeting As notified via email recently, the Club will hold its AGM at 11am on Sunday 10 th September, 2017. We require at least 15 members present for a quorum, so please make an effort to come along for about one hour and support the Committee which works hard to run YOUR club as best we can.
