4 Precision Rifleman The Arizona Benchrest Shooters held the Sporter & Unlimited 5-shot Arizona State Championship on November 8-9, 2014. This Championship combined with the LV/HV 2-Gun Arizona State Championship held on October 4-5 to create the 4-Gun Arizona State Championship. We welcomed 32 shooters from Arizona, Colorado, Utah, Idaho and California. Day 1 was 100 yards for both Sporter and Unlimited. Bob Brackney raised the flag that morning and then proceeded to get some great groups, including one that measured at 0.49. That group has been submitted for a possible record! We were happy to see Bruce Newell come out to attend his first benchrest match. Bruce won one of the matches with a 0.133 group, great shooting! Thanks to Lester Bruno for helping Bruce get into benchrest and for inviting him out to the match. On Day 2 the wind picked up a little and quite a few matches had fishtailing flags. Shooters were happy to see a water truck come out to keep dust down from target crew travel. In the end, Bob Brackney won the Grand Aggs for Sporter, Unlimited 5 and the Sporter-Unlimited 5 2-Gun. Gary Ocock ended up taking home both the 3 and the 4 Gun Grand Aggregates. For this Championship, the Arizona Benchrest Shooters came out with some new awards for those who are on top of the Ironman Running Agg as well as an award that was presented to Garett Atkins for being the top Junior Shooter. Thanks to Chuck Miller and Tom Debacco for bringing junior aged shooters to the match. With the introduction of this new award, we hope to see more shooters bringing juniors for the next match. In the photo above are Bruce Newell, William Marsh, George Lozano, Lester Bruno, Stephen Everson, James Gardner, Gary Ocock, Tom DeBacco, Dan Andrus, Gene DeLoney, Chuck Miller, Bob Brackney, Garrett Atkins, Duke Rovarino, Dan Sutton, Gary Vanlier & Larry White. This Invitational produced a Combined 1 Gun Agg (2 Unlimited Aggs) and also combined the Visalia Unlimited 5 Shot Invitational to create a Combined 4 Gun Agg. Practice started off with a day of unexpected rain that wouldn't let up. By the end of the day there was a rainbow that could be viewed touching down right behind the berm. The match had a great turnout with 37 total shooters, three of which were juniors. Shooters came from Nevada, California, Idaho, Colorado, Missouri along with those from all over Arizona. On Day 1, Lou Murdica's Granddaughter, Angelina Gonzalez, achieved her first small group match win with a 0.120 in the 2nd match. Congratulations are definitely in order to this March, 2015 Precision Rifleman 7 skilled 10 year old who finished 4th during the second 100 yard stage with a 0.1612 yardage agg! (Pictured at left). Day 2 started off with the harshest wind we have seen at any AZBRS matches this season. The first 200 yard agg was won by Dan Sutton, who was shooting a bag gun! After a very rough start, the wind calmed down and some great 200 yard 5 shot groups were fired, including an amazing 0.088 group from Lester Bruno that has been submitted for a possible Unlimited 5 Shot 200 yard record! What we referred to as the 3rd Unlimited 5 Shot Agg (a combination of 100 yard and 200 yard) was won by Gary Ocock with a 0.2548 agg. The 4th Unlimited 5 Shot Agg was won by Lester Bruno with a 0.1716 agg. Steve Archibald Tops Windy 300 Yard 4-Gun in Northern Nevada The Palomino Valley Gun Club held its last Benchrest Match of the season on October 25th & 26th in the most challenging wind conditions for a match held thus far at the Washoe County Regional Shooting Facility north of Reno, Nevada. A light turn out of shooters faced a heavy dose of wind and blowing dust with cool temperatures on Saturday for the first of two days of all 300 yard shooting. We started off in 30+ mph winds with the Unlimited 5 shot and Henry Pinkney, one of two out of state shooters to join us, won the category with the only aggregate in the fives, a.5517 along with the small group of 1.029. Travis Archibald finished second with a.6977, followed by his dad, Steve, with a.7709. Moving on to Sporter Class with increasing winds and light rain beginning to fall, we were forced to suspend shooting for the day after two of the five groups. Our brave target pulling and scoring team of Kelly Marsh and Kerri Sarras, could no longer keep the damp targets in place in the 55 mph wind. At the end of the day, the author had cranked 13-1/2 minutes of windage into his scope. The winds backed off on Sunday to 20-30mph and we were able to finish the final three groups of Sporter Class before moving on. The decrease in wind showed on the targets as the small group after giving up on Saturday was a 1.362 by Don Archibald but when we started up on Sunday, Don s son Steve shot a small group of.749. Our other out of state shooter, Everet Smith took top honors in Sporter with an agg of.4523. Don Archibald finished second with a.4946, and Mark Ronchetti was third with a.5032. With two guns to go for the match, we quickly moved on to Light Varmint and Everet Smith kept his stride with a winning aggregate of.6160 and small group of.895 in winds that just March, 2015 Precision Rifleman 13 weren t going to let up for the day. Lonnie Gordon placed second in LV with a.6633 and Steve Archibald was a close third with a.6680. We finished up the weekend with Heavy Varmint and Steve Archibald, the only shooter to have just one group over 2 in this class, won with the only HV agg in the fives, shooting a.5539. Travis Archibald finished second with a.6434 and small group of 1.059. Lonnie Gordon was third with a.7041. In the Two Gun, Steve Archibald prevailed with a.6110, followed by Everet Smith in second with a.6716, and third place went to Lonnie Gordon with a.6837. Everet Smith was our Three Gun winner with an agg of.5985, followed by Steve Archibald shooting a second place.6066, and third was Mark Ronchetti with a.6948. Finally, our 4 Gun 300 Yard Champion was our match director, Steve Archibald, edging out Everet Smith by a mere 0.0007 in the grand aggregate! Henry Pinkney was our third place finisher. The top three grand aggregates were, 0.6477, 0.6484. and 0.7158. Jan Sarras was unable to attend the

14 Precision Rifleman match, as he was recovering from back surgery he had just several days prior; however, he turned out three beautiful red, white and blue ball point pens on his lathe for the top three awards in the 4 GUN competition. Jan s wife Kerri Sarras on, crutches and in a boot cast from surgery herself, and her sister Kelly Marsh persevered in daunting weather conditions to provide us with great target service. In the photo on the previous page from L-R is Henry Pinkney, Steve Archibald, Travis Archibald, Mark Ronchetti, Everett Smith, Lonnie Gordo and Don Archibald. 24 Precision Rifleman A Review of... Leupold s New V-6 7-42X 56 mm Riflescope As a long-time fan of Leupold scopes, I was elated to read of their new variable on the market. It was almost as if this scope was designed personally for me. It has all of the features that I want in a scope to shoot in 600 yard competition and few of the "bells and whistles" that I don't need. The features that I consider necessary for long range competition are as follows: 1. Great optics 2. High magnification 3. Adjustments in 1/8 moa 4. MOA reticle 5. Quick focus eyepiece 6. Generous vertical adjustments 7. Long eye relief 8. Side focus parallax adjustment This scope has all of the above and does not have some of the things that I, personally, do not need. I prefer 1/8 MOA adjustments and this scope has them for elevation, but uses 1/4 MOA for windage. Although some will disagree with the features that I list as not needed, they are as follows: 1. Lighted reticle 2. Zero stop 3. First focal plane reticle 4. Range finding reticle (the MOA is sufficient for my purposes). Although I personally don't need it, this scope features a type of zero stop for both windage and elevation. This feature keeps a person from going more than one revolution. It does allow one to make changes in both directions from zero. Testing at the range As with all scopes that I test, I first mount it on an accurate rifle and shoot the "square", ie: I fire one round at a clean target and move the point of aim up 32 clicks (4 MOA); fire a second round and move the POA 4 MOA right; fire a third round; move 4 MOA down; fire a fourth round; move 4 MOA left and fire a final round. This completes the square and gives evidence of the reticle tracking. For this test, I used my BAT rifle with a Hawk Hill barrel chambered in.30 BR. My load was one that I have not

used before. It consisted of 35.0 grains of LT-32 powder ignited by a Federal 205 primer and pushing a 115 grain bullet by 10X. Both the scope and load passed muster with ease. The three shots in the center were fired at 42X and 18X. I normally try a variable to see if there is a noticeable shift in point of impact when one changes the power setting. Again, this new Leupold passed with flying colors. Since the.30 caliber bullets are very expensive and hard to find, I did not shoot any more of them, but changed the barrel to a Bartlein 6mm PPC. On July 27th, I plan to use this scope for the 200 yard phase of the Louisiana VFS Championship. I will shoot the 6 PPC barrel at 200 and will fire the.30 BR at 100. Since I will be pre-loaded, I will use a different scope for the 100 yard stage. Let me give a shout out to Warner who, along with Leupold sent a set of their wonderful 34mm rings to mount the scope. Both rings are of a tactical nature and are steel and somewhat heavy. The Warner rings are a little lighter than the Leupold ones. I may have to use the lighter ones to make the 13.5 weight limit with the.30 BR. Specifications Field of view: 16.3 ft @ 7X & 2.7 ft @ 42X Eye relief: 4.2 @ 7X & 3.9 @ 42X Weight: 26.3 ounces Elevation adjustment: 55 MOA Windage adjustment: 45 MOA Length: 15.5 inches Lead-free optics Blacked lens edges to reduce glare Twin bias spring on erector system Diamond Coat on lenses that boost 92%-98% light transmission Quantum optical system designed to get maximum performance from the variable scopes (like this one) Fast focus eye piece MOA reticle Waterproof and shockproof As one can see, Leupold made this scope using the latest technology and quality costs. The suggested retail for this scope is $2499, but I don t know the street price. Is it worth the price? That is a personal decision, but I know that it is a quality product and exhibits a flat, sharp image that extends to the edges of the lens. It is designed with the finest coating and lens alignment to insure optimum low-light viewing. Having tested several premium scopes, I can recommend this one to a serious long range competitor. Testing in Competition Testing a scope on the home range is okay, but one really finds the worth of a scope during competition. On July 27th, the Louisiana State VFS Championship was held in Lake Charles, LA. Since I have only one benchrest rifle, and I plan to shoot a.30 BR at 100 yards and a 6 PPC at 200. This involves changing barrels between the two yardages. Therefore, I zeroed the.30 BR with another scope at 100 yards. The Leupold was zeroed with my 6 PPC barrel and I replaced both barrel and scope during the intermission. This seems like quite an ordeal but I wanted to pre-load my ammunition and I did not have enough prepped brass in either chambering to shoot the entire match. For this match I used 35.0 grains of DATA 4197 powder and 115 gr. flatbase bullets from 10X for the.30 BR; and I used 28.3 gr. of LT-32 to push Bart s Ultra 68 gr. FB bullets in the 6 PPC. The scope did much better than I at the match. I shot a 497-20X but the fault was mine and the hot cross wind. I asked Hall of Fame member Don Geraci to look through the scope and give his opinion of the optics. He was quite impressed with the March, 2015 Precision Rifleman 25 clarity of the scope of this hot, humid Louisiana day. Summary This is truly a quality scope and it performed well in all of the tests through which I subjected it. Are there some things that I did not find pleasing? Yes. The price is too much for those of us with a limited budgets; however, it is in line with many of the premium scopes designed for competition. I don t like having 1/4 minute adjustments for windage. Also, the clicks for elevation are like those found on many scopes that have 1/8th MOA adjustments...a little too mushy for my tastes. Maybe that is why they decided on 1/4th MOA for the windage. This scope was designed with long range competition like F- class, but it could certainly be a great scope for varmint hunters with it wide power range. The MOA reticle provides great rangefinding capability. I am glad to see that Leupold made the reticle subtend the MOA at the highest power (42X). The 56mm objective lens allows a large exit pupil at 7X and this scope could be used in low light situations such as those encountered by hunters. There are always those whose first question is, How much does it cost? The suggested retail is $2499, but I have seen them advertised at $1999. Is this latest offering worth the price? That is up to the individual, but compared to other premium scopes, the value is there for this price range. If you are in the market for a quality scope, take a look at this new offering from Leupold. --James Mock

Sahuaro 1000-Yd Benchrest Tucson, Arizona January 10, 2015 Try as you might, all you could hear was the cricket and the Cactus Wren calling as the purple sky was slowly starting to lighten to dawn. The distant, soft thunder of a U.S. Border Patrol Blackhawk helicopter broke the erie silence of the desert morning. Suddenly, walking slowly and silently out of the mist, came a troop of steely eyed benchrest shooters, carefully, and yet casually caressing their prized precision 1,000 yard rifles. Focused and unblinking, their square jaws set with grim determination as they approached the secluded sign up area in the pits. They glanced around the gloom, seeming to take in every detail, every shadow, every possible hiding place. Coming to a halt in a semi-circle which appeared to look suspiciously like a defensive position. The one whom I presumed to be their leader finally spoke... In a voice that was more like a growl, he said, "Where the hell is Karl? That match director is supposed to be here by now!" I jumped back, putting my back to the wall, knowing I was hopelessly out-numbered... Too dramatic? Well...okay, how's this; The January ''Dead of Winter'' starting time of 8:00 AM, instead of the normal 7:00, was a nice 50F, although the weather report was expecting a high of 80F and predicting light winds. From light sweater or hoodie weather to T-Shirt weather in a matter of an hour or so. We were happy to see the two new faces of Kim Krueger and Ricky Stevens. The turn out was 10 shooters and 17 guns. Karl was there on time of course, just like he always is. Even though the conditions were very good throughout most relays, relay two (1st Heavy Gun) had the wind come to a complete halt. The flags were hanging limp, and with the desert sun beating down, the slow mirage made looking through the scope identical to looking through a fishbowl. Your target was dancing and wavering like it was painted on the side of a flag in the wind. The mostly mild conditions produced some excellent groups in Light Gun, the top six shooters in light gun shot a group or groups of six inches or less. We had three six inch groups, four five inch groups, and two four inch groups. Mike Billotte shot a 3.81'', we all thought he had won small group, when along came Ross Herrick in relay three, to shoot a 3.62'' group, handily winning Light Gun group with a 5.29'' aggregate! Ross, of course, won smallest group and highest single target score with a 50. Nice shooting Ross! His target is pictured at left.. remember, this is at 1000-yards. The top three Light Gun shooters all had five inch aggregates, and the top six out of ten were all sub-moa. Steve Everson, who's excellent shooting won for Light Gun Score, shot two fives and a six inch group and still came in third. Wow, what a match! Heavy Gun was not as dramatic with the top three shooter turning in sub- MOA aggregates. Dale Arenson won for Heavy Gun Group, plus highest score of 96-XX and smallest group of 8.12'', while Steve Everson placed first again in Heavy Gun Score with a 276-XX. As always, a great time was had by all, and pretty soon we were all off to Cindy Lou's for juicy hamburgers and ice cold drinks, where we sit and talk calibers, ballistics, rifles, scopes, shooting conditions and most importantly, how we are all going to do better next month. Speaking of next month, come join March, 2015 Precision Rifleman 27 the fun. There is always room for more shooters at the NBRSA Sahuaro match. Three Points Range is about 25 miles west of Tucson, Arizona. The second Saturday of every month. 30 Precision Rifleman Mark Buettgen Shoots New World Record The Light Varmint 100 yard record of 0.1441 shot by Jim Carmichel on May 11, 2012 has been replaced by Mark Buettgen s 0.1426 shot at the 2014 Holton Group Nationals on September 23, 2014. Congratulations to Mark, (pictured at right), who will also be shooting for Team USA s A-Team in St Louis in 2015 s World Benchrest Championship. What a way to begin the year! WBC USA Team Members Did you know the World Benchrest Championship USA Teams have been announced? Just in case you missed it, the following are the NBRSA team members who will be contending against the world s finest benchrest competitors. This event will be held at Bench Rest Rifle Club at St Louis, MO from September 22-26, 2015, which is following the 2015 NBRSA Group Nationals scheduled from September 14-19 at the same venue. As always there was a hard fought competition to qualify for the US team. The competition turned even more intense due to the fact it is being held here in the USA. The average finishing spot to qualify in the top 12 was 14.7 in each qualifying grand. Congratulations on being selected and best of luck to you. --Wayne Campbell World Team Representative Southeast Region Director Team A Gene Bukys Tony Boyer Mark Buettgen Chris Harris Team B Lester Bruno Wayne Campbell Col Billy Stevens Larry Costa Team C Bob Scarbrough, Jr Mike Ratigan Jack Neary Mike Conry Alternates in order... How to Make Your Magazine Better & Keep Your Editor from Getting Gray Hair Dear Avid NBRSA benchrest fans, I am writing you to first and foremost thank you for the opportunity to produce this monthly magazine for you. It s a fun challenge and I enjoy it very much. I thought it would be a good idea to mention some ways to improve the process so that you can continue to enjoy reading your match write ups, pictures and equipment lists in the most efficient way. If I were to have a Christmas List for match write ups, this is what I would ask: 1. Match Results and Write-Ups. Word format are the best and quickest for me to work with, as they allow me to edit the content directly and then copy-paste into the publishing software program. PDF s require that each character be retyped which takes much more time, increases the chances for error and contributes to the dreaded gray hair. I ll take any format you send and work diligently to get each issue to you as quickly as possible with as much content as I can, (with the least amount of editing error), but my preference is for Word documents for match results and write ups. 2. Photo Phun. No, this is not a new vietnamese dish. It s a request to keep those pictures coming! Preferably in LARGE formats with 300dpi resolution. This can be easily manipulated on most smart phones with camera features. You ll be looking for the camera icon and then touch the settings icon. Look for the word resolution and then pick the largest size you can. Another help is under image quality where you would want to pick superfine for the best quality image. These files can be emailed directly from your smart phone to me at nbrsa.manager@gmail. com. If you have a lot of pictures to email, just send a few at a time so them email transfer doesn t get bogged down. 3. Equipment Lists For these, Excel is the preferred format as it allows me to edit them quickly and efficiently. Again, I will gladly take whatever documents and in whichever format you send them and am grateful for every single one you send. These are your benchrest memories kept for your keeping in living color both in print and online. It is my pleasure to serve you. If you feel the compunction to send in an article of interest, I d be more than happy to review these as well. Your Humble Servant, Audrey Brown Jack of all trades; Master of none
