HISTORY OF ST. PATRICK St. Patrick's Day honours St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, who in the year 432, left his home to bring Christianity to Ireland. Irish people celebrate St. Patrick's Day on March 17. This day, they dance the Irish jig and meet to sing Irish songs. People wear green in memory of Ireland, the Emerald Isle and wear shamrocks made of three leaves. In Ireland, this is a religious holiday similar to Christmas and Easter. March 17 was the day when St. Patrick died. Irish people don't know the date of his birth, most scholars believe the year was 385 AD and the year of his death was 461 AD.
