Introduction 10 things you need to know about the FIFA U-20 Women s World Cup 1. The 2010 edition in Germany will be the 5 th U-20 FIFA World Cup. 2. The first FIFA U-19 Women s World Cup was held in Canada, while the second was played in Thailand, the second Asian country, after China PR (1991 and 2007), to host a FIFA Women s World Cup. The 2008 event was held in Chile as the FIFA U-20 Women s World Cup. Chile was the first South American country chosen to stage a FIFA Women s World Cup. 3. A total of 30 different teams have qualified for at least one of the final competitions (2002-2010). The continental breakdown [AFC (7), CAF (3), CONCACAF (4), CONMEBOL (4), OFC (1) and UEFA (11)] underlines the excellent development work of the leading lights in women s football, as Brazil, Germany, Nigeria and the USA have all qualified for all final competitions held to date. 4. In 2010, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ghana and Sweden will all play in the FIFA U-20 Women s World Cup for the first time. 5. With two titles and 20 wins in 24 matches the USA lead the U-20 All-time Ranking. In 2008, the US girls swept the trophy board by winning the title as well as the adidas Golden Shoe and Ball awards both of which went to forward Sidney Leroux. They also won the Fair Play Award. 6. The highest average number of goals per match was recorded during the inaugural tournament in Canada (3.88 goals per match), followed by Thailand 2004 (3.54) and Chile 2008 (3.53). 7. In contrast to 2002, 2004 and 2008, the final in 2006 saw a flood of goals. In 2002, the USA defeated the Canadian hosts with the only goal of the game, while in 2004, Germany overcame China PR 2-0, with the goals scored in the first and last ten minutes of the match. In 2006, the all-asian final between Korea DPR and China PR ended in a comfortable 5-0 victory for the North Koreans. 8. The youngest player to have taken part in this competition is Canada s Sydney Leroux, who was just 14 years and 6 months old. Mexico s Charlyn Corral became the competition s youngest goalscorer (at just 14 years and 11 months) when she scored against Switzerland in August 2006. 9. With a total of 295,133 fans at an average of 11,351 per match, the FIFA U-19 Women s World Cup Canada 2002 set a benchmark that will be difficult to beat. Although in Chile 2008 a total of 351,309 fans at an average of 10,978 per match was counted. 10. Teams from the same confederation have met in the final match twice, with USA playing Canada in 2002 and Korea DPR playing China PR in Russia in 2006. FIFA U-20 Women s World Cup Germany 2010 - Information valid on 28 May 2010 3/48

History The first confederation to stage an age-group tournament for women was UEFA in 1997 with the European Women s U-19 Championship. In a move to further promote the women s game, FIFA followed suit with its own competition for young women. As was FIFA s intention, the event has encouraged member associations to develop women s football at youth level and to set up teams in younger age groups, including the U-13 and U-15 brackets. Moreover, the championship has also prompted the confederations to organise continental qualifying competitions. There are more than 20 million women playing football worldwide and 216 of them paraded their impressive skills at the inaugural FIFA U-19 Women s World Cup in 2002. Since the event in Russia in 2006, the tournament is now organised as the FIFA U-20 Women s World Cup, with 16 teams divided among the confederations: AFC: 3 teams; CAF: 2; CONCACAF: 3; CONMEBOL: 2; OFC: 1; UEFA: 4 and the host, who qualifies automatically The first FIFA U-19 Women s World Cup was held in Canada, while the second was played in Thailand, the second Asian country, after China PR (1991 and 2007), to host a FIFA Women s World Cup. The 2008 event was held in Chile as the FIFA U-20 Women s World Cup. Chile was the first South American country chosen to stage a FIFA Women s World Cup. The Swedes have participated in all five editions of the FIFA Women s World Cup, finishing as high as second in 2003 and third in 1991, as well as coming fourth in the Women s Olympic Football Tournament Athens 2004. The Scandinavians finished runners-up in the last UEFA European U-19 Women s Championship in 2009, when they lost 2-0 to England in the final. Nevertheless, the Blågult had already clinched the continental U-19 title back in 1999, thanks to a 2-1 triumph over Germany in the decider. Sweden are one of four debutants at the 2010 tournament alongside Colombia, Costa Rica and Ghana. Match facts and figures (Group matches) #1 GERMANY COSTA RICA The two sides have crossed paths once before in the female game, at the FIFA U-17 Women s World Cup 2008. On that occasion goals from Lynn Mester, Dzsenifer Maroszan (2), Turid Knaak and Tabea Kemme fired Germany to a resounding 5-0 win. This is the second time that Germany have played the curtain-raiser to the FIFA U-20 Women s World Cup. In 2004 the German juniors opened the tournament against Thailand in Bangkok, romping to a 6-0 victory. Celia Okoyino da Mbabi and Lena Goessling both hit braces in that match, while team-mates Anja Mittag and Simone Laudehr also got on the score sheet. Germany - Costa Rica was also the fixture that kicked off the 2006 FIFA World Cup TM in Munich. #2 COLOMBIA FRANCE This is the two national sides first meeting in women s football. France have never drawn in thirteen matches played at FIFA s U-20 showpiece, collecting six wins and seven losses. Les Bleuettes achieved their largest margin of victory in the FIFA U-20 Women s World Cup against another CONMEBOL side making its debut in the competition Argentina, running out emphatic 5-0 winners on that occasion. #3 BRAZIL KOREA DPR This is the third encounter between Brazil and Korea DPR at the FIFA U-20 Women s World Cup. The east Asian juniors edged a 1-0 win in the semi-finals of the 2006 event, whereas the South Americans prevailed 3-2 during the first round in 2008. A Seleção also nicked a 2-1 opening-round victory at the Women s Olympic Football Tournament in Beijing. This is Brazil s 70th match in FIFA competitions. As Canarinhas have played 22 fixtures in the FIFA Women s World Cup, the same number at the Olympics and three in the FIFA U-17 Women s World Cup. This is the Brazilians 23rd game in the FIFA U-20 event. Korea DPR have found the net in all 12 of their matches played at the FIFA U-20 Women s World Cup, where they have chalked up ten victories and two defeats. #4 SWEDEN NEW ZEALAND The two sides go head-to-head for the first time in the women s game. Sweden have always lost their opening match in FIFA competitions. At the FIFA Women s World Cup 1991 the Blågult slumped to a 3-2 defeat by USA, before slipping up 2-0 against China PR at the Women s Olympic Tournament 1996. In the opening matches of both of their previous campaigns at FIFA s U-20 showpiece, New Zealand have let in three goals. In 2006 the Junior Football Ferns went down 3-0 against neighbours Australia, before losing 3-2 to Nigeria in 2008. #5 ENGLAND NIGERIA The pair s only prior encounter in this category was a 1-1 draw played out at the FIFA U-20 Women s World Cup 2008. The two sides also squared up in the FIFA Women s World Cup 1995, resulting in a 3-2 English success, as well as at the FIFA U-17 Women s World Cup 2008, when England again prevailed with a 1-0 scoreline. By contrast, Nigeria came out on top in two friendlies played between the senior sides in England in 2002 and 2004, securing 1-0 and 3-0 victories respectively. In six meetings against European opposition in this competition, the Falconets only win was an 8-0 thrashing of Finland in 2006. In the other five matches, the west Africans recorded three draws and two defeats. #6 MEXICO JAPAN Mexico and Japan meet for the first time in the finals of a FIFA competition. Of their seven prior encounters, all of which took place between the senior national sides, four were play-offs in qualification for the finals of the FIFA Women s World Cup and the other three were friendlies. Japan have fared better overall with five wins to Mexico s one, the other ending all square. This is Mexico s tenth match at the FIFA U-20 Women s World Cup. El Tri are yet to draw a game, having amassed one victory and eight defeats. Prior to meeting Mexico, Japan have only come up against one CONCACAF team in this competition. The east Asian juniors have twice crossed paths with Canada, losing 4-0 in 2002 and winning 2-0 in 2008. #7 USA GHANA The two sides go toe-to-toe for the first time in the female game. The only prior showdown between USA and an African side in the FIFA U-20 Women s World Cup dates back to the 2006 event, when the Americans battled to a 2-1 win over Congo DR. The United States have won all four of their opening matches in every past edition of the FIFA U-20 Women s World Cup: 5-1 against England in 2002, 3-0 against Korea Republic in 2004, 2-1 against Congo DR in 2006 and 3-0 against France in 2008. #8 SWITZERLAND KOREA REPUBLIC This is the first meeting between these two sides in women s football. Korea Republic face European opposition for the third successive time in four matches played at the FIFA U-20 Women s World Cup. In their only previous campaign, at the 2004 event, the Koreans lost the opener 3-0 to USA and then went down 2-1 against Spain, before bouncing back with a 2-0 win over Russia. #9 GERMANY COLOMBIA The two teams have never previously crossed paths in the women s game. In previous FIFA U-20 Women s World Cups, Germany have only ever met one South American side, facing Brazil on three separate occasions. The Germans record stands at one win, one draw (which they later won on penalties) and one defeat. #10 COSTA RICA FRANCE This is the sides first meeting in female football. In all of their previous participations in the FIFA U-20 Women s World Cup, France have been paired against CONCACAF opposition in the opening round. In 2002 Les Bleuettes overcame Mexico 2-1, whereas in the 2006 and 2008 editions they suffered respective 1-0 and 3-0 setbacks against USA. #11 BRAZIL SWEDEN The two national teams have only ever faced each other at senior level, meeting three times in the FIFA Women s World Cup, twice in the Women s Olympic Tournament and once in a friendly match. The record is all square with three victories apiece. This is Sweden s 40th fixture in FIFA women s events. The Swedes have contested 23 matches in the FIFA Women s World Cup, 15 at the Olympics and two at the FIFA U-20 Women s World Cup, including this one. #12 KOREA DPR NEW ZEALAND The only prior meeting between these sides was a friendly played out between the senior teams in 2004, which ended in a 11-0 landslide victory to the Koreans. #13 ENGLAND MEXICO This is the teams first head-to-head meeting in a FIFA competition. The two senior national sides played out a friendly match in 2005, which ended in an emphatic 5-0 win for England. In five matches played against European opposition at the FIFA U-20 Women s World Cup, Mexico have always conceded at least two goals. That includes their only win against a UEFA side in this competition, 4-2 over Switzerland. FIFA U-20 Women s World Cup Germany 2010 - Information valid 28 May 2010 28/48

#14 NIGERIA JAPAN This fixture was the first match played by both teams at the inaugural FIFA U-20 Women s World Cup in 2002. On that day the final score was 1-1, with goals from Akiko Sudo and Akudo Iwuagwu. The pair also met at the Women s Olympic Tournament in 2004, when the west Africans ground out a 1-0 win. Nigeria have never got the better of an Asian team at the FIFA U-20 Women s World Cup. Besides that draw with Japan in 2002, the Falconets have twice been defeated by China PR, 1-0 in 2004 and 3-0 in 2006. #15 USA SWITZERLAND The two sides square up for the first time in the women s game. USA have won 10 of their eleven meetings against European opposition at the FIFA U-20 Women s World Cup. Their only defeat dates back to the 2004 semi-finals, a 3-1 reverse against Germany. #16 GHANA KOREA REPUBLIC The two sides have never gone head-to-head before in women s football. Ghana are the first African side to face Korea Republic in this competition. #17 FRANCE GERMANY Between them the sides have amassed six European crowns at U-18/U-19 level, with Germany clinching five to France s one. On no fewer than two occasions, in 2002 and 2006, the two nations locked horns in the final itself. Both of those showdowns ended in German victories. The pair have faced each other twice in the FIFA U-20 Women s World Cup, with Germany coming up trumps on both occasions. The Germans triumphed 2-0 in a first-round game in 2002, before battling to a 5-3 win in the match for third place in 2008. The 2002 match was the third in chronological order played on the opening day of the inaugural FIFA U-20 Women s World Cup. #18 COSTA RICA COLOMBIA The two sides meet for the first time in the female game. Excluding the first edition in 2002, this is the seventh time that two debutants have faced each other in the opening round. The last time this happened was in 2006, in the matches Korea DPR-Switzerland and Congo DR- Argentina. #19 NEW ZEALAND BRAZIL At the FIFA U-20 Women s World Cup 2006 in Shchelkovo, the two sides played out a 0-0 stalemate in their final opening-round match. The following year in the FIFA Women s World Cup, Brazil swept to a 5-0 win. FIFA U-20 Women s World Cup Germany 2010 - Information valid 28 May 2010 29/48

#20 KOREA DPR SWEDEN The teams meet for the first time at youth level. All three previous encounters between the senior sides ended in odd-goal victories to Sweden. The Blågult won 1-0 in a friendly in 2002, before edging two wins in the FIFA Women s World Cup, 1-0 in 2003 and 2-1 in 2007. In their two previous outings in this competition, Korea DPR have a 100% winning record against European opposition. The east Asian juniors overcame Germany, Switzerland and France at the 2006 edition, before beating Norway and France once more in 2008. #21 JAPAN ENGLAND This is the sides first showdown at the FIFA U-20 Women s World Cup. The pair have met twice in other events, drawing 2-2 on each occasion. The first was at the FIFA Women s World Cup 2007, while the second was in the quarter-finals of the FIFA U-17 Women s World Cup 2008, when England eventually squeezed through on penalties. Japan and England have remarkably similar records in this competition. They are both making their third appearance in the event, have both participated in the same editions (2002 and 2008), have been eliminated at the quarter-final stage of every campaign and did not take part in the 2004 and 2006 editions. #22 NIGERIA MEXICO This is the first meeting between these sides in women s football. In each of their final opening-round matches in this competition, Mexico have conceded at least three goals and lost. The North Americans were defeated 3-1 by Germany in 2002, 3-0 by Korea DPR in 2006 and 5-1, again by the Koreans, in 2008. #23 KOREA REPUBLIC USA In the sides opening match at the FIFA U-20 Women s World Cup 2004, the reigning champions USA beat Korea Republic 3-0 to notch their seventh consecutive victory in the competition, having won all six games at the inaugural 2002 tournament. The North Americans went on to extend that winning streak to a record ten matches, before losing 3-1 to Germany in the semi-finals of the same edition. The senior teams have squared up six times, resulting in five wins to the United States and one draw. The sides only other meeting was in the quarter-finals of the FIFA U-17 Women s World Cup 2008, where the Stars and Stripes once again prevailed with a 4-2 win. #24 GHANA - SWITZERLAND These two sides have never met before in the women s game.
