The Mids, who enter the game 4-2 and 2-1 in Patriot League action, are led by fifth-year head coach Rick Sowell, while the 1-5 Leopards are under the direction of fourth-year head coach Jim Rogalski. Dove won 13 of the 22 draws against Loyola last Saturday and on his 12th attempt of the day, he moved past previous record holder Chris Pieczonka (2002-05) who posted 363 wins over 46 contests. u 3-4-5... 6?: Sophomore midfielder Casey Rees has put together back-to-back-to-back career highs in goals. He matched his original career high with 3 goals at Boston U. (2.27) before following up with a 4-goal effort at Bucknell (3.5). On Saturday, he unleashed for a career-best 5 goals against Loyola. u Ground Game: Navy has scored double digits in 14 of the 17 games in its series against Lafayette, while the Mids have held the Leoaprds to single digits 15 times. u Droughts: The Mids are 4-0 in games in which their opponents have experienced scoring droughts of 20 minutes or more, including Saturday s win over Loyola in which the Greyhounds did not score form 0:29 in the second quarter to 13:43 in the fourth. u Who s Scoring: Navy s starting attack and midfield has combined to score 52 of the 58 goals this season with the attack scoring 27 times and the midfield 25 times. The remaining 6 goals have been scored by long pole Matt Rees (4), short-stick defensive middie John Trainor (1) and second-line midfielder Colin Flounlacker (1). Fennell Added to Tewaaraton Award Watch List All-American defenseman Chris Fennell was one of 15 players added to the Tewaaraton Award Watch List last Thursday, pushing the list to 65 members. The field will be narrowed to 25 nominees on April 28 and the five finalists will be announced on May 12 and invited to the Tewaaraton Award Ceremony set for June 2 at the Smithsonian Insitution s National Museum of the American Indian. Fennell has been an integral part of Navy s success on defense, anchoring a unit that is giving up 7.33 goals per game this season and is ranked seventh nationally. Dating back to last season, Navy s defense has held 14 of its 20 opponents to single digit goals, including four of the six this spring Fennell has also helped direct Navy to a #6 national ranking in caused turnovers per game (9.17), as he stands 26th with a 1.50 average. Department of Defense Since 2000, Navy s defense has been ranked among the top four nine times including No. 1 four times. Navy finished its 2015 campaign ranked #13 in scoring defense, giving up 8.57 goals per game. It s the Mids best mark since they held their opponents to a 7.69 GAA in 2009. The Mids held 10 of their 14 opponents to single digits last spring. It s the fewest double-figure goal games Navy has allowed since 2009 when that squad surrendered 3 double-digit contests and went on to finish 11-5, won the league s tournament title and faced Duke in the NCAA Tournament. Navy enters Tuesday night ranked #7 in scoring defense, holding its foes to 7.33 goals per game. Dating back to last season, the Mids have held 14 of their 20 opponents to single digit goals. Navy s defense has given up double-figure goals 50 times in its last 149 games (2006-present), 52 times in the last 165 (2005-present) and 56 times (Ohio State, Army WP, Johns Hopkins and Syracuse in 04; Georgetown and Virginia in 05; Army WP 06; Colgate, Georgetown, Johns Hopkins and North Carolina in 07; Georgetown, Johns Hopkins 2x and Colgate in 08; Colgate, Johns Hopkins and Duke in 09; North Carolina, Lafayette, Towson, Georgetown, Maryland and Army WP-PL Tourney in 10; North Carolina, Lehigh, Bucknell, Towson, Maryland, Army WP and Johns Hopkins in 11; Jacksonville in 12; Fairfield, Bucknell, Lafayette, Colgate, Lehigh, Army WP and Johns Hopkins in 13; Holy Cross, Towson, Lehigh 2x, Colgate, Army WP and Maryland in 2014; Johns Hopkins, Lehigh, Loyola and Army WP -PL Tournament in 2015; Johns Hopkins and Boston U. in 16) in the last 183 games (2004-present). Score By Quarters 1 2 3 4 F Navy (4-3, 2-1) 7 7 2 2 -- 18 Lafayette (1-4, 0-3) 0 1 2 1 -- 4 Navy rattled off the game s first 11 goals while holding Lafayette scoreless for nearly 23 minutes en route to an 18-4 victory over the Leopards at Fisher Field. The 18 goals by Navy were the most in the series since the Mids defeated Lafayette, 23-0, in the inaugural meeting in 1926. Coming off just two days rest, the Mids came out aggressive on both ends of the field. Navy scored just over a minute into the game when midfielder Kevin Wendel targeted the first of his three goals from the left wing. The Mids built a 7-0 advantage by the end of the first quarter and pushed the lead to 11-0 midway through the second quarter before the Leopards put up their first goal of the game on an unassisted goal by midfielder Scott McAvoy. Navy scored the final three goals of the half to take a commanding 14-1 advantage into the break. The Mids spread the wealth on offense as nine different players scored during the offensive outbreak in the opening half. The Leopards looked to mount a comeback when they scored the first two goals of the third quarter, but Navy answered with a pair of goals including the first collegiate score by Ray Wardell. Lafayette scored its final goal of the contest 34 seconds into the fourth quarter when Jason Sands found McAvoy to trim the lead to 12 at 16-4. Navy, however, would punch in the final two goals of the game. On the year, they have 31 more ground balls (174-143) than their foes. Since 2004, Navy owns an amazing 64-3 record when holding its opponents to six or fewer goals, including a 22-2 mark in the last eight seasons combined. Navy is 3-0 this season, holding Air Force to 6 goals in the opener, Delaware to 1 and Bucknell to 6. The 1 goal by Delaware marked the fewest goal scored by a Navy opponent since the Mids dealt Army West Point a 12-1 loss in the semifinals of the 2007 Patriot League Tournament. Navy is 66-6 record when scoring 10 or more goals since 2004, including a 42-5 mark in the last eight seasons (9-1 in 2009, 10-1 in 2010, 3-2 in 2011, 5-0 in 2012,3-0 in 2013, 4-0 in 2014, 5-0 in 2015, 3-1 in 2016). At least one pole (close defense or LSM) has either scored a goal or dealt out an assist every year since 1994. All-American defenseman Chris Fennell (1A vs. Air Force) and All-Patriot League pole Matt Rees (1G, 1A vs. Johns Hopkins; 1G vs. Delaware; 1G at Boston U., 1G vs. Loyola) have contributed points this season. Navy has been held to single digit extra-man goals in 4 of the last 5 seasons (7 in 2012, 9 in 2013, 7 in 2014, 13 in 2015, 3 in 2016). Last year, Navy started the year 0 for 8 before finishing the season 13 for 43. It s the most extra-man goals scored by Navy since 2011 when it was 19 for 55. The Mids have struggled out of the gate this season and are 3 for 15. Navy has scored 7 or fewer goals in 26 of its last 59 contests. The Mids snapped a 29-game losing streak with scoring 7 or fewer goals when they defeated Holy Cross on Feb. 28, 2015, in a 7-6 win. Navy earned a 5-1 win over Delaware in a defensive battle on Feb. 21. Navy has scored a man-down goal in each of the five seasons (not counting 2016), featuring goals by three current players - Patrick Keena (VMI 14), T.J. Hanzsche (Georgetown 14) and Chris Fennell (Bucknell 15). Navy s defense surrendered double digit goals in just 4 contests in 2015. It s fewest since the 2009 season when the Colgate (10-9), Johns Hopkins (15-7) and Duke (14-5) scored double figures in wins over the Mids. Navy has given up double figures twice (Johns Hopkins-12, Boston U.-10) in its give games this season. Record Watchers In his 34th game wearing a Navy uniform, junior Brady Dove became the school record holder for career faceoff wins with 367. Dove won 13 of the 22 draws against Loyola last Saturday and on his 12th attempt of the day, he moved past previous record holder Chris Pieczonka (2002-05) who posted 363 wins over 46 contests. Sophomore Joe Varello stands 19th with 42 wins, trailing 18th-place Dan Decker (2005-08) by 12. Dove is also on the verge of joining Navy s single-season faceoff wins list for a third time in his career. Logan West (2010) and Mike Haertel (1997) are tied for 20th with 64 wins, while Dove heads into the Lafayette game with 57 wins this season. West is the only player to have his name listed 3 times, however, once Dove joins the list, he will bump West and Dove will be the lone three-timer on the list. Dove is also ranked among the program s best in ground balls with 189. He needs 18 to move into a tie for third alongside Steve Looney (2003-06). Dove is 11 ground balls shy of becoming only the fourth player in school history to reach 200 for their career, joining record holder William Wallace (222), John Duthie (214) and Steve Looney (207). Senior attackman Patrick Keena continues to climb Navy s top-20 career assists. After joining the leader board with a 3-assist effort at Bucknell, he moved up to 18th with another 3-assist performance against #15 Loyola. He leads the team with 15 assists this season and owns 49 for his career. Keena is one assist shy of becoming just the 18th player in school history to reach the 50-assist milestone. Meanwhile, he needs 3 assists to tie 17th-place Andy Warner (2008-11) and 4 to tie 16th-place Tucker Hull (2011-14). Senior keeper John Connors moved into 13th on Navy s career saves chart (315) following the Mids win over Air Force (2.6). He needs just 1 save to tie 12thplace Malcolm Ogilvie (1966-68) and 40 to reach the top 10. Behind a 12-save performance at Bucknell (3.5), he became just the 13th goalkeeper in Academy history to post 300 career saves. There are four active players who are among the top 10 on Navy s career caused turnovers list. Junior long pole Matt Rees is third on the list with 41 and trails second-place Austin Miller (2010-13) by 4. Dove Soars Among Faceoff s Elite Brady Dove etched his name into the Navy record books as one of the best faceoff men as a freshman, boasting the nation s 20th-best winning percentage (.564) and earning Second-Team All-Patriot League honors after turning in the program s second-most single-season faceoff victories (163). Little did anyone know, it would be just a glimpse of what the future would hold for Dove and the Mids. A 2015 First-Team All-Patriot League selection, Dove finished last season ranked #8 in the country, winning 147 of the 235 draws (62.6). A Tewaaraton Award Watch List member, he placed fifth on the Mids singleseason wins list and set school records for faceoff wins and attempted by a sophomore. He opened the 2015 campaign by winning all 10 of his draws against VMI and combined with Joe Varello to win 21 of the 26 draws they took in the first 3 quarters. Dove was one of just three players nationally to go unbeaten in a game a year ago. He won 19 of the 25 draws he took against Lehigh (3.14.15), tying the record for most wins at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. It was also just one off the school record for wins. In his 34th game wearing a Navy uniform, Dove became the school record holder for career faceoff wins with 367, a list that dates back just 30 years when faceoffs were first documented. He won 13 of the 22 draws against Loyola last Saturday and on his 12th attempt of the day, he moved past previous record holder Chris Pieczonka (2002-05) who posted 363 wins over 46 contests. He is one of just three players in school history to win 300 faceoffs, achieving the feat last year in the Patriot League Tournament Semifinals (4.24.15). He has lost the faceoff battle against the opposition just eight times in his career (2014 vs. Georgetown, Colgate, Army WP, Maryland; 2015 vs. Loyola, Army WP-PL Tournament; 2016 vs. Johns Hopkins, Boston U.) during his career (34 gms). He is the record holder for faceoff wins (163) and attempts (289) by a freshman and sophomore (147-235). This year he will aim for the junior record held by Chris Pieczonka with 173 wins in 2004 and Max Grant with 281 attempts in 1987. Also one of the Mids top ground ball leaders, he is fourth on Navy s career list with 189. Dove is 11 ground balls shy of becoming only the fourth player in school history to reach 200 for their career, joining record holder William Wallace (222), John Duthie (214) and Steve Looney (207). Whether it s the added military training, mandatory room or uniform inspections or the academic schedule, Service Academy student-athletes are in a league of their own. The Naval Academy s academic day is divided into six 50-minute class periods beginning at 7:55 am and concluding at 3:20 pm. CBS Sports Network will broadcast back-to-back Navy games, first a home matchup on April 9 against 2015 Patriot League Tournament Champion Colgate followed by the annual showdown between Army West Point and Navy slated for April 16 at West Point. The Big Ten Network has picked up the April 19 meeting between Navy and Maryland after the game was postponed from its Feb. 13 date due to dangerous temperatures. CBS Sports Network is also on tap to televise the Patriot League Tournament Semifinals (April 29) and Championship (May 1). The Mids own a 27-39 record when their games are televised (since 04). Navy is 18-20 on CBS Sports Network all-time and 6-16 on the ESPN family of networks. The Mids are also 1-0 on American Sports Network, 1-0 on local Baltimore station WMAR, 1-2 on MASN and 0-1 on NBC Sports Network. The Mids are 79-36 in games that have not been televised since the start of 2004. Navy In Overtime Navy owns an 18-24 all-time record in overtime contests, including a 10-14 mark in games at home. 27 of the 42 games have been decided in a single overtime period, however 9 have gone into double overtime, 4 into three extra frames, 1 into four and 1 into six. The Mids dropped a 12-11 double-overtime heartbreaker to #5 Johns Hopkins on Feb. 9 at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. It marked just the fifth time in the 90-game series history the game had been decided in extra frames and the first double-ot game between the two. Hopkins has won four of the five. Navy also dropped its first game in the series to Boston U. on Feb. 27, a double-ot matchup (10-9). Perhaps no overtime game in school history gained more attention than when Andy Warner etched his name into Naval Academy lore by way of his overtime goal against 17th-ranked Johns Hopkins in 2010, snapping a 36-game losing streak to the Blue Jays. It was the Mids first win over Hopkins since 1974. Meanwhile, another overtime thriller saw Navy pull out a 9-8 triple-overtime victory over Colgate in the 2009 Patriot League Tournament Semifinals. Midfielder Joe Lennon scored four goals for the Mids, including the last three. It marked the Mids first overtime win in postseason action, as Navy previously lost NCAA Tournament decisions to Cortland State (2OT) in 1972 and Washington & Lee (3OT) in 1973. The Navy win also goes down in the record books as the longest Patriot League Tournament contest. The Mids 8-7 loss against Cornell in 2008 marked the first time in program history that Navy had played an overtime game at a neutral site. The cast of voters included the league s coaches and sports information directors. Loyola, who tied for third a year ago with a 5-3 mark, edged out both the league s regular-season champion - Navy - and tournament champion - Colgate - as this year s preseason favorite. The Greyhounds secured 12 of the 18 first-place votes (eligible for only 16, cannot vote for your own team) and totaled 122 points to stand atop the preseason vote. Although Navy accounted for five of the remaining six firstplace votes, the Mids held just a three-point advantage (108-105) over Colgate for second. Army West Point was picked fourth with 85 points, followed by Bucknell (70), Boston U. (58), Lehigh (54), Holy Cross (29) and Lafayette (17). In addition to the preseason poll, the 2016 Preseason All-Patriot League Team was also unveiled. Headlining the 12-member team were reigning Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year, Navy junior Chris Fennell, who was selected as the 2016 Patriot League Preseason Offensive Player of the Year, and Loyola senior attackman Zach Herreweyers who was chosen as the preseason Offensive Player of the Year. Eight of the nine teams placed players on the preseason team, including Army West Point, Boston U., Colgate and Loyola with two selections apiece. Bucknell, Holy Cross, Navy and Lehigh each had one player chosen for the preseason squad. Patriot League Success Since joining the Patriot League in 2004, Navy has put together a 63-31 record (67.0) against conference members, which includes an 11-4 (73.3) mark in the Patriot League Tournament. Plenty of Goals to Go Around Last season, 19 different players contributed goals for Navy, including 14 with at least 2 goals. It s the most players to score for the Mids since the 2010 campaign when 21 different players punched in goals. Navy finished the 2015 season averaging 9.79 goals per game which ranked 38th in the country. It s Navy s best scoring average since finishing the 2007 season averaging 11.00 goals per game. Additionally, the Mids 137 goals were the most since 2010 when that team scored also 137 goals, but in 15 games. The Mids have reached double digits in four of their six games this season, including a season-best 13-goal effort at Bucknell (3.5). The Mids are ranked 36th nationally, averaging 9.67 goals per game. Nine different players have scored goals for the Mids, including sophomore midfielder Casey Rees who leads the team with 13. I coach (pct.) in NCAA history, has been selected for induction into the Intercollegiate Men s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IMLCA) inaugural Hall of Fame. Bilderback is among 11 men who will be honored in the inaugural IMLCA Hall of Fame Induction Celebration on Saturday, May 28 in Philadelphia as part of the weekend-long festivities surrounding the 2016 NCAA Men s Lacrosse Championships. A member of the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame, Bilderback took over reins at the Naval Academy in 1959 and guided the program to eight consecutive USILA national championship titles, including outright crowns in 1960, 62 63, 64, 65, and 66. The streak of five outright titles between 1962-66 is an accomplishment matched by no other team in the history of the sport. During that eight-year span, Navy produced a 79-8 (.908) record and a decade mark of 96-14-1 (.869). The Mids won 25 consecutive games beginning with a season-opening victory over Rutgers on March 28, 1964, and ending four games into the 1966 campaign season. Bilderback also was at the helm when the NCAA adopted lacrosse as one of its sponsored sports, leading the Midshipmen to back-to-back tournament appearances (1971 and 72) in the first two years the tournament was held. Bilderback was the recipient of the Morris Touchstone Memorial Award, the National Coach of the Year, in just his second year as Navy s head coach and was inducted into the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame in 1973. He amassed a 131-26-2 (.830) record over his 14-year head coaching career at the Academy. All in the Family Over the years, Navy has seen several sets of brothers walk through the gates of the Academy. Some of those brothers attended the Academy at the same time, like the Looneys (Brendan 04, Steve 06, Billy 07) and the Lennons (Clipper 05, Bobby 09, Joe 10). Others, like Shane ( 09), Pat ( 14) and Brendan ( 17) Durkin, just missed playing alongside one another. Navy has two sets of brothers on this season s squad - Matt ( 17) and Casey ( 18) Rees and Connor ( 17) and Ryan Wade ( 19). Senior attackman T.J. Hanzsche s father, Tom, was a four-year letterwinner for the Mids from 1986-89 who played attack on four NCAA Quarterfinal teams. Senior goalie John Connors is the brother of four-year letterwinner Brendan Connors ( 10), who played on two NCAA Tournament teams and one (2007) of two Navy teams who went undefeated in Patriot League play. Junior goalkeeper Connor Wade and freshman attackman Ryan Wade are the sons of two-year Navy lacrosse letterwinner Capt. John Wade ( 90) and nephew of three-year Navy lacrosse letterwinner Tim Andrews ( 88). Matt and Casey Rees father, Cliff ( 88), wasn t a standout on the lacrosse field, but instead played basketball alongside David Robinson and earned a trip to the Elite 8 his Plebe year. Sophomore long pole Steve Hincks father, Steven ( 78), garnered Honorable Mention All-America honors as a defenseman for the Mids his senior year. As a freshman he was a member of the Navy team that played in the program s first NCAA Championship Game and was an NCAA Semifinalist the following three seasons. Navy 112 3.19.16 Loyola 10-9 Annapolis, Md. Navy 12 Head Coach Rick Sowell On June 9, 2011, Naval Academy Director of Athletics Chet Gladchuk introduced Rick Sowell, a man who has been involved with rebuilding programs at Georgetown, Dartmouth, St. John s and Stony Brook, as the Naval Academy s eighth head men s lacrosse coach in its 100- plus year storied history. In his first season at Navy, Sowell directed the Mids to a 6-6 record, including a 3-3 mark in Patriot League action which featured a 12-11 victory over 12th-ranked Colgate in Hamilton, N.Y. It marked Navy s first.500-win season since 2009. Navy capped off its season with an 8-2 rout over No. 6 Johns Hopkins. The six-goal victory marked the Mids largest margin of victory in the series since 1965 when Navy scored a 15-6 win over the Blue Jays. Meanwhile, the Class of 2012 became the first class since 1974 to graduate having twice beaten Hopkins. In 2014, the Mids to put together a 3-5 Patriot League mark and earned their first trip back to the conference postseason tournament since 2010. He guided Navy to a share of the Patriot League regularseason title in 2015 and the No. 1 seed in the league tournament. He was named the 2015 Patriot League Coach of the Year. Sowell compiled a 47-26 (.644) record in five seasons at Stony Brook and was named the America East Coach of the Year in each of the last two seasons as he guided the Seawolves to back-to-back America East regular-season titles (2010-11). The victory snapped an eight-game losing streak to top-10 opponents, as it last defeated a top-10 team on April 3, 2009, when the Mids defeated No. 8 Maryland, 10-4. In 2010, Sowell led Stony Brook to the program s first America East regular-season title, a school-record 13 wins, a No. 6 national ranking and a 9-7 victory over Denver in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The Seawolves were just a game away from advancing to the school s first-ever final four, narrowly losing in to Virginia in the quarterfinals, 10-9. Stony Brook had four players earn All-America honors, including Kevin Crowley who was the school s first First-Team All-American and was named the USILA Player of the Year. Sowell, who was an assistant coach for the gold-medal winning Team USA at the 2010 World Championships in England, led Stony Brook to a 9-6 record in 2009 and a final ranking of No. 20 in the country. It marked the school s first end-of-the-season national ranking. Stony Brook finished 4-1 in America East and stood as the regular season co-champions. Prior to Stony Brook, Sowell was tapped to head the rebirth of the St. John s lacrosse program that had been dormant since 1995. Sowell had just one season to recruit before the Red Storm took the field in 2005. Sowell was the head coach at Dartmouth from 1999-2003 and revived the Big Green program, taking the team from last place in the Ivy League to first. In his final season at Dartmouth in 2003, Sowell s squad posted an 11-3 record and won the Ivy League with a 5-1 record. It was Dartmouth s first Ivy League title since 1965 and just the third Ivy League title in school history. During the title run, the Big Green upset No. 2 Princeton marking the first time that Dartmouth had won at Princeton since 1958. Sowell was also named the NEILA Coach of the Year that season. Sowell s coaching career began at Washington College in Chestertown, Md., where he helped guide the Shoremen to the NCAA Division III national title game in 1986 and the semifinal round in 1987. Sowell was named the 1985 Division III National Midfielder of the Year and was also a two-time All-American. He helped lead Washington College to the Division III national championship game twice. His 45 goals and 14 assists earned him Division III First- Team All-America honors and an invitation to participate in the annual North-South All-Star Game. Sowell graduated from Washington College in 1986 with a bachelor s degree in history.
