From the President Happy New Year! Another year has come and gone I still can t believe it is 2015. Looking back over the past year, our club has had many ups and a few downs but the downs have always in some way or other led us to another up. Our Toys for Tots dance was great, and since the Marines didn t show up, Jack Flood was kind enough to take the toys to his local drop off location. We had plenty of food, and boy was it good! Our Christmas Dance was also well attended. Anthony Yancey catered for us and the food was great. The dance floor was well used all evening. It was great to see some members who don t always make all of the monthly dances. Now, turning to the New Year plans are being finalized for MMATB 2015. Your Board is working hard to put the final touches on a wonderfully planned weekend. Looking forward, this is an election year. Nominations will be held in June, and the election in August. Start thinking about what you could bring to our club to keep it moving forward. And as always, thank you to all who volunteer and help the Board bring all of our club events to fruition. I am proud to say that I have a very loyal and hard-working Board and they deserve a big round of applause! Here s hoping that your new year is filled with love, happiness, health and many, many places to dance! Ron Sunshine Committee Report By Sondra Riley Dana Cady has been ill for some time, with difficulty breathing, and after many tests, it was determined that Dana had lung cancer. He has had surgery and part of his lung was removed. Dana is presently undergoing a series of Chemo treatments. Please send your prayers and best wishes for a speedy recovery to Dana. Cindy Yanky's mom passed away on October 24th in Lincolnton, NC. Please keep Cindy and her family in your prayers for safety during their travels and for peace in their grief. Bonnie Thorne broke her right wrist on Thursday night after being at Perry s. She will be limited on her activity for a while and would appreciate phone calls and well wishes during her recovery. Millie Cave fell Halloween Night at a party and hit her head. She was medevac d to the University of Maryland Hospital in Baltimore. Other than a big bump and stitches, all else seems to be fine. Please send some prayers and good wishes to Millie in hopes she will make a complete recovery. Becky Hartman was back in the Sinai hospital in Baltimore again for a bacterial infection. Back in March of this year, she had been admitted to Sinai hospital for a similar condition and was in rehab for several months. Let s pray that Becky s recovery will be much faster this time. Please keep Becky in your prayers and send her your best wishes. Lillian Kublic has had minor surgery and was not dancing for a while. We wish Lillian a speedy recovery and we are glad to see her back out again. See correction below. Happy belated birthday to Gary Fitzgerald 11/20 Spotlight on Spotlight on Frank Stowell by Jim Chappelear I had the pleasure of having lunch with Frank recently at a nice restaurant near his beautiful home in an area that he laughingly referred to as in the south county in the hole. It is an absolutely beautiful area of Anne Arundel County and a place where Frank has called home for nearly forty years. For any club members who do not know Frank, my recommendation is to get to know him. He is a remarkable person, with many interests other than hand dancing. Frank was born and reared in Northeast DC. He became interested in the dancing scene and has made many friends in our dance community. Frank s father was a skilled carpenter and artisan. That may have had some influence on the fact that he worked in the construction industry for many years. Like many of us Frank was called to military service during the Viet Nam era. Frank served as a Marine infantryman in Viet Nam. It was during this service that his life made a dramatic change. On one of the many foot patrols in the bush with his squad of six Marines, Frank and his comrades were injured by some form of explosive device planted along the rice paddy dike that they were patrolling. Frank was one of the lucky ones. One of his fellow Marines was killed and the others were severely wounded. As a result of his wounds Frank was medically retired from the Marines. He received a Purple Heart. Despite his wounds Frank has had a full and rewarding life, and he is proud to be a Marine and to have served his country. Among his many interests are sailing, traveling and skiing, in addition to his dancing. Among his many feats in life are his adventures sailing the oceans. He sailed a fifty-foot sailboat from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, to Rome, Italy. I find that inspiring. As one who has piloted airplanes over the North Atlantic many times, I do not think that I would be so brave as to attempt it on a fifty-foot sailing vessel. This adventure was accomplished with only two other crewmembers. What a daring accomplishment! Among his many accomplishments is the fact that Frank is a certified professional ski instructor. While skiing has been a life-long love, the physical demands on his body will no longer allow him the pleasure of skiing down the slopes of the Alps or Snow Shoe. I think that this is something that all of us can relate. The passage of time makes great demands on our bodies. Frank has traveled worldwide with friends. Among the many exotic locations to which he has traveled are Germany, Italy and Paris in Europe, to Peru in South America. He has stories to tell about all of these adventures. One of his fellow travelers is our mutual friend, Glen Pyles. Time and space here limits me repeating some of these traveling tales but sit down with him at our next dance and I am sure that Frank will share some of these stories with you. Frank is single. He confided in me that he has loved and lost and has no regrets about his life. If you do not know Frank, you are missing a treat. He is an adventuresome and fun-loving guy. 5 2015 / January - February Newsletter

Sunshine Committee Report / By Sondra Riley (Continued from page 2) Betty Elliot had a five-hour, three-way heart by-pass surgery at Washington Hospital Center. She is recovering very well, but it will still be a long time before Betty will be back to dancing. Please keep Betty in your thoughts and prayers. Joyce Chucci invited all of the Club Member s to "Celebrate the Life of Michael F. Chucci." There were many dancers, friends and loved ones that came to share memories of Mike at his memorial service. The food, dancing and friendship was an excellent tribute to Mike Chucci s generosity and friendship. - H U G G I N G - I was looking at some D.C. Hand Dance Club newsletters from many years ago and found 2 articles on Hugging. I thought I would share one of the articles with our readers this month. The following article on Hugging was taken from a DC Hand Dance Club newsletter written in 1998. H U G G I N G (Copied from Newsletter May-June 1998 - D.C. Hand Dance club) HUGGING is healthy - it helps the body stay strong it cures depression, it reduces stress, it brings new life and it has no unpleasant after effect. HUGGING is a miracle food. It is organic, naturally sweet, has no pesticides, contains no preservatives - has no artificial ingredients and is 100% wholesome. HUGGING is practically perfect: there are no movable parts, no batteries to change, no need for periodical checkups, has low energy consumption but has a high energy yield. It is inflation proof, non-fattening - does not need monthly payments, has no insurance requirements - is theft proof, non-taxable, non-polluting and of course is always returnable! Reflecting on Recent Club Events October 27, 2014 A Comment from one of our Weekly Club News Update Email Notices Following our Fall Fling Dance in Lancaster, PA (Oct 24-26) there was an email Weekly (News) Update sent out (Oct 27) that mentioned the DCHDC now has an official Hugger an official Cutter of the Cheese an official Pretzel Maker. The email news update asked the question Wonder who these dancers are? Well I was curious who these dancers were so I contacted our club email administrator to find out who these dancers were and have listed them below: Official DCHDC Hugger ************ Gay Rodey Official DCHDC Cheese Cutter ******* Roy Rodey Official DCHDC Pretzel Maker ******* Neil Carter Saturday, November 1, 2014 Halloween Dance (Attendance: 103) Our Halloween Dance was a big success, there were many creative costumes. The winners of the Halloween costume contest were: 1st Place "The Mad Hatters" - Merv & Nancy Roussell 2nd Place "The Skeletons" - Roy & Gay Rodey 3rd Place "The Mask" - Fred Kay Many thanks to everyone who came dressed up in a Halloween costume. It was really fun to see so many of you dressed up in your costumes. 3rd Place 2nd Place 1st Place Saturday, November 22, 2014 20th Anniversary & Toys for Tots Dance (Attendance: 129) Our 20th Anniversary Party was a big success! We all walked down memory lane, and we had photo albums going back to 1995 and videos from the past. The food was good, and there was a lot of it. We had lots of food left over since we had prepared enough for about 200 people but all who attended had a great time! Below are photos of DCHDC dancers who were present at this dance that have been with the club from the beginning since it began in the fall of 1994. 11 2015 / January - February Newsletter

Things You Should Know About (Continued from previous newsletter) How come no one ever told me?? ============================================================================= 5) Greek yogurt containers are meant to be folded in half. Chances are you ve been scooping the toppings with your spoon onto the yogurt. But, have you realized, the topping holder folds over, so you can pour the toppings DIRECTLY ON TOP? ============================================================================= 6) You ve probably been placing toilet seat covers in the wrong direction. The flap is meant to be placed toward the front. This prevents the agony of sitting down on a toilet seat, only to realize you ve dragged the cover down into the bowl. True Stories The 2013 Darwin Awards Countdown from 9th Place to 1st Place (Continued from Sept-Oct 2014 newsletter People sometimes do some really dumb stuff.) Seventh Place While at the beach, Daniel Jones, 21, dug an 8 foot hole in the sand for protection from the wind and had been sitting in a beach chair at the bottom, when it collapsed, burying him beneath 5 feet of sand. People on the beach used their hands and shovels trying to get him out but could not reach him. It took rescue workers using heavy equipment almost an hour to free him. Jones was pronounced dead at a hospital. Sixth Place Santiago Alvarado, 24, was killed as he fell through the ceiling of a bicycle shop he was burglarizing. Death was caused when the long flashlight he had placed in his mouth to keep his hands free rammed into the base of his skull as he hit the floor. Fifth Place Sylvester Briddell Jr., 26, was killed as he won a bet with friends who said he would not put a revolver loaded with four bullets into his mouth and pull the trigger. IT ALWAYS SEEMS IMPORTANT TO THANK THESE PEOPLE FOR REMOVING THEMSELVES FROM THE GENE POOL. (To be continued in the next newsletter edition) 13 2015 / January - February Newsletter
