Lock Out Tag Out Globally Harmonized System of Chemical Labeling Globally Harmonized System of Safety Data Sheets
A lock or a tag is placed on the equipment in a position that prohibits it from being turned on. Tags will be used in conjunction with the locks. Tags will identify the employee who locked out the piece of equipment. Only the person who locked out the equipment is authorized to remove the lock.
Use lockout devices for equipment that can be locked out. A Tag can be used only if machines or equipment cannot physically be locked out.
Standardized labels Reduce confusion
Product identifier Signal Word Hazard Statement Precautionary Statement Supplier Identification
Product Identifier - match the name on the safety data sheet (SDS) Signal Word Danger (severe), Warning (less severe) Hazard Statement describes the hazard Precautionary Statement how to minimize the hazard
Flammable Liquids or solids Emit flammable gas Self heating Self reactive Organic peroxides Pyrophorics (ignite when exposed to air) Oxidizers Contribute oxygen to the combustion process making things burn faster Do not store near flammable or combustible materials
Exploding Bomb Explosive Self reactive Organic peroxides Gas Cylinder Gases under pressure Can become projectile Can displace breathable air Can cause frostbite
Corrosion Skin corrosion/burns Eye damage Corrosive to metals Can cause leaks in storage containers Skull and Crossbones Acute toxicity Can be fatal Poison
Health Hazard Cause health problems over a long period of time Carcinogens cause cancer Mutagens cause changes to DNA, can affect future offspring Reproductive toxicity affect ability to have healthy children Respiratory sensitizer can cause allergic reaction at low levels after initial higher level exposure Target organ toxicity attacks specific organ Aspiration toxicity can lead to chemical pneumonia
Exclamation Mark Broad category Irritant Skin, eye, respiratory Skin sensitizer cause allergic reaction after subsequent exposure Acute toxicity not as severe as those marked with skull and crossbones Narcotic effects Hazardous to ozone layer
Environment Aquatic toxicity One or more of these 9 pictograms will appear on labels and SDS s. All labels must be in the new format by June 1, 2015 May continue to see some other labels in addition to the GHS labels if they are required by other agencies (DOT, EPA, etc.)
Under GHS, MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheets) are replaced with Safety Data Sheets (SDS). Standard format, order, information, and classification system 16 sections The same titles The same order
Section 1 Product Identification Section 2 Hazard Identification Same information as on the label
Section 4 First Aid Measures By route of entry Contact Inhalation Ingestion Symptoms of overexposure Recommendations for immediate medical care
Section 6 Accidental Release Measures Response measures Containment Clean up Personal precautions PPE Emergency procedures
Section 7 Handling and Storage Minimizing releases Prevent personal exposure and contamination Hygiene considerations Incompatibilities with other chemicals/agents (high heat, water, etc.)
Section 8 Exposure Controls and Personal Protection Permissible Exposure Limits Ventilation or Exhaust requirements Recommended Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
Section 11 Toxicological Information Routes of exposure Inhalation Ingestion Skin contact Eye contact Effects of overexposure Acute Chronic Target organ effects Symptoms If it is a carcinogen
Section 13 Disposal Considerations Disposal containers Disposal methods Special precautions for landfills or incineration
GHS developed to help reduce confusion Standardized format Standardized order Standardized classification system Manufacturers must change over to the new formats of labels and SDS s by June 1, 2015
