(There is no status difference between all-girl and co-ed. The only difference is that all-girl has female bases and female flyers. Co-ed has males bases and female flyers). ALL-GIRL & CO-ED TRYOUT REQUIREMENTS Females Standing back handspring Dance* Cheer* Fight Song* Toe-touch jump Two partner stunts* Average height to weight ratio * Each candidate will have the opportunity to partner stunt with members of the current Spirit Squad at the time of tryouts. The cheer, fight song, dance, and partner will be taught during tryouts. Males* Back tuck (or close to one) Cheer Fight Song Four Partner Stunts Average height to strength ratio * No prior cheerleading experience is necessary. Participants who tryout should be athletic and in good physical condition. Cheerleading skills will be taught at the time of tryouts.
ELIGIBILTY You must be accepted as a full time student at the University of Maryland, College Park (12 to 15 credits). You must be able to attend the following: Summer Practices June 1 st -July 30 th (once a week) August 1 st August 31 st (Monday-Thursday) Summer Camp (August 13-15th: Myrtle Beach, SC) Each member will personally have to fundraise $420.00. Home football games Away football games (if selected) Home basketball games (men and women s) Post season bowl games (if selected) Post season basketball tournaments (men and women s, if selected) You must be able to attend practice 3-4 days a week and weight lifting sessions. Must be able to attend all fundrasiers, appearances and other team events. Must be able to attend practices and games during the winter break. **All practices are mandatory. You will need to attend all games and events even if they are scheduled on Labor Day Weekend, Thanksgiving Weekend, or over the Winter Break. TRYOUT ATTIRE (ALL-GIRL & CO-ED) Females Sports bra and athletic shorts White tennis shoes Need to arrive with full hair and make-up Males Plain white t-shirt (no tank tops or cut off t-shirts) Dark colored shorts White tennis shoes Need to be well groomed (no ponytails, beards or mustaches) TRYOUT PREPARATION Complete the Tryout Application and Assumption of Risk Form. Obtain a recent headshot and/or full body photograph (photos will not be returned). Submit the Tryout Application, Assumption of Risk Form, and Photograph to Maryland Cheerleading prior to May 1, 2004. If your application has not been sent prior to May 1, 2004, you may submit it at tryouts (See the tryout application for detailed mailing and submission instructions). You will want to make sure that you are in top physical condition. The University of Maryland Cheerleaders participate in a regular cardiovascular routine, and lift weights. Being in the best possible shape will improve your talent and reduce your risk of injury. TRYOUT PROCESS Thursday, May 6, 2004, Optional Clinic An optional clinic will be held Thursday, May 6, 2004, from 6:00pm-8:00pm in the Reckord Armory. Clinic participants will have an opportunity to learn proper stunting technique and get a jumpstart on the learning the tryout material. At the clinic, the University of Maryland cheerleaders and coaches will provide demonstrations and personal instruction. Many participants will have the opportunity to stunt directly with the current team members. The clinic is not mandatory, but is recommended for all tryout participants. The cost of the clinic is $20.00. Please make checks payable to CheerUM and submit along with the tryout application. The clinic is open to high school students, college transfers, and current University of Maryland students. Clinic participants do not have to tryout out for the team in order to attend. Friday, May 7, 2004, Tryout Day #1- (Attendance is Required to Tryout) All material will be taught on the first day of tryouts (dance, fight song, jumps & stunts). Participants will have the opportunity to warm-up gymnastics skills. A University of Maryland Coach will interview each participant.
Saturday, May 8, 2004 (Session #1-Review, Material & Stunts, Session #2- Formal Tryout) During the first session, participant will review all necessary tryout material and stunts. During session # 2, participants will tryout in groups of 4, and will be scored on the following elements. Partner stunts (co-ed or all-girl) Standing tumbling Running tumbling Dance (females) Motions Jumps Physically fit height to weight ratio A panel of judges will select the 2004-2005 University of Spirit Squad. Judging will be based on physical talent, dance ability, personality, appearance, poise and the interview with the coaches. Assumption of Risk/Release In consideration of being allowed to participate in any way in the Intercollegiate Athletics program at the University of Maryland, College Park and/or related events and activities of the Intercollegiate Athletic program at the University of Maryland College Park Name: A. Acknowledge and fully understand that I will be engaging in activities that involve risk of potentially serious injury including permanent disability and death, and severe social and economic losses which might result not only from my actions, inactions or negligence of others, the rules of play or the condition of the premise or of any equipment used.
