Some Game Themes: The new era officially begins for Arizona with Kevin Sumlin s debut on the sideline this Saturday night A much-anticipated opening act will include plenty of other subplots: How does Khalil Tate, now a veteran, respond to preseason hype? Can the Wildcats piece together an offensive line that will allow new offensive coordinator Noel Mazzone to use his full array of skill talent? Is the defense, under the direction of third-year coordinator Marcel Yates, bigger and deeper up front? Will a $25 million renovation, notably to the Zona Zoo student section, along with other gameday enhancements, revitalize the Arizona Stadium faithful? Oh, and what does BYU have to say about all this? Indeed, there are always more questions than answers as the new season looms. And typically a first game will create even more questions to be addressed in the subsequent weeks For Arizona, the most intriguing question will be what does a Kevin Sumlin team look like on the field. The past eight months have seen plenty of positive changes in the overall structure and culture of the program. The plan is for that to carry over to recruiting and onfield success. But much off that is part of a bigger multiyear vision for the program, not the X s and O s required to beat BYU It s that matchup with the Cougars that will interest a national audience on ESPN this week. BYU has plenty of its own unanswered questions to sort out, not to mention the motivation to put a disappointing 2017 season in the rear-view mirror These teams met in a neutral site season opener in Glendale two seasons ago, when Kalani Sitake earned his first head coaching win. The Cougars narrowly prevailed that evening on a last-minute field goal, a dagger that sent the Cats into a downward spiral of a three-win season Two years later, Arizona has a new coach and only a handful of players that factored into that 2016 defeat With so much uncertainty on each side, it s not a stretch to focus on a traditional key to victory: controlling the line of scrimmage. There s not a sexy stat for it, but the team that plays more physical and executes in the trenches will have a decided advantage Alas, momentum, turnovers and other big plays surely will have a say in the outcome, too Which leaves us with just one more question: are you ready for some football? Last Meeting: Arizona dropped a nail-biter to BYU, 18-16, as Jake Oldroyd s 33-yard field goal with four seconds remaining in the game provided the winning margin at the Cactus Kickoff Classic in Glendale, Ariz., on Sept. 3, 2016. The Wildcats, who struggled mightily to move the football much of the night, came to life in the fourth quarter. Trailing 15-3 with under 12 minutes to play, Nick Wilson punched in a 15-yard rushing touchdown to cut the deficit to 15-10. Later, he erupted for a 49-yard touchdown burst, giving UA it s a first lead of the night. However, Anu Solomon s failed pass on a two-point attempt left the slim lead at 16-15 with 1:26 remaining. BYU s Taysom Hill calmly marched the Cougars down the field and deep into scoring position, where a potentially disastrous false start penalty pushed them back a few yards. The penalty came with eight seconds on the game clock, but fortunately BYU had a timeout remaining to avoid a game-ending 10-second runoff that would have given UA the victory. Backed up five yards, Oldroyd, who relieved the struggling Rhett Almond, drilled the 33-yarder right down the middle. The thrilling fourth quarter made up for a defensive struggle much of the game. Neither team scored in the opening quarter (the first time that had happened in a UA game since 2011) before Almond kicked a 24-yard field goal and Brayd El-Bakri plunged in a 1-yard touchdown for a twoscore lead. Yet, Almond s extra point kick missed, setting up a one-point differential was that was noteworthy throughout. Each side failed at two-point tries later on. Nick Wilson s 138 yards on 17 carries included the two scores to highlight the UA offense. His counterpart, Jamaal Williams, didn t find paydirt but set a bruising tone with 162 yards on 29 totes. Taysom Hill was an efficient 21-of-29 passing for 202 yards and a score, and most importantly didn t turn the ball over for the Cougs. Meanwhile, Anu Solomon was 20-of-30 for 213 yards passing, including a pair of interceptions. A New Era: Come kickoff Saturday, a total of 228 days will have passed since Kevin Sumlin was introduced at a press conference in the Lowell-Stevens Football Facility as the 32nd head coach in Arizona football history. A lot has happened since then. For one, Sumlin assembled a staff of 10 assistant coaches (and plenty of other key staffers) committed to recruiting at a higher level than the program ever has. Additionally, he s engaged with the community and alumni base, from numerous gatherings in Tucson, to stops in Phoenix, Flagstaff and even California. Lastly, the physical foundations for his program are being built. A $25 million project to improve Arizona Stadium is in the final stages, while the much-needed $18 million Indoor Sports Center and practice facility will be completed this winter. A much bigger project to renovate the west and southern sections of Arizona Stadium will be coming in the next few years. Now Sumlin has a chance to do what he loves most, and that s simply coach football. He s done it very well in his 10 seasons as a head man, compiling a cumulative 86-43 record over four seasons at Houston (35-17) and six at Texas A&M (51-26). He inherits a starting quarterback, Khalil Tate, who captured the college football world with a sensational six-week stretch last fall. Expectations are high for both Tate and Sumlin, but the plan in Tucson is to build for the future and make football a priority in these parts. It s easier said than done, but the process is well underway. Arizona in the NCAA Rankings Category NCAA P12 Value Rushing Offense Passing Offense Passing Eff. Each of Sumlin s three immediate predecessors Rich Rodriguez, Mike Stoops and John Mackovic were victorious in their first games at Arizona. Rodriguez and Stoops each opened their tenures with home victories over Toledo (2012) and Northern Arizona (2004), respectively, while Mackovic took his team on the road to defeat San Diego State (2000). The last Wildcat coach to lose his initial game was Dick Tomey, who saw his charges drop a narrow decision at Arizona Stadium to Iowa, 15-14, back in 1986. Since World War II, Arizona coaches are 6-6-1 in their first game on the Arizona sideline. Interestingly, two of those contests have been against BYU. On Sept. 21, 1957, Ed Doherty s squad tied the Cougars, 14-14, in Tucson. Just two years later, on Sept. 19, 1959, Jim LaRue s first club dropped a game to BYU, 18-14, also in Tucson. Thus, Sumlin has an opportunity to even the ledger against BYU in such games. Sumlin s Debuts: Now at the helm of his third program in 11 seasons, Kevin Sumlin is set to make another coaching debut. His first opportunity was a decade ago, when Houston routed Southern, 55-3, on Aug. 30, 2008. Four seasons later he was at Texas A&M, where his Aggies dropped a close one to Florida, 20-17, on Sept. 8, 2012. Both contests were home games for Sumlin, just as this Saturday s will be in Tucson against BYU. In that regard, Sumlin is 9-1 in his home opener, and he has started a season at home in seven of the past 10 seasons. Overall, Sumlin is 8-2 in the first game of the season, losing only at home to the Gators in 2012 and then on the road at UCLA last season. For Openers: Arizona is 83-26-5 all-time in the first game of the season, winning nine of the last 10 In those 10 contests, the Wildcats have outscored opponents by a cumulative 408-122, or an average of 40.8 to 12.2 points per game UA s last season-opening loss came at the hands of Brigham Young when the Cougars edged the Wildcats, 18-16, on Sept. 3, 2016, at University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Ariz. The Cats and Cougars have a bit of history opening the season against one another. This Saturday will mark the fourth time since 2006 they have squared off in a season opener, with BYU owning a 2-1 advantage in those games All-time, Arizona owns a 4-3-1 edge in the series when the teams meet in the season opener. In the 2000s, Arizona is 17-1 in its first home game, which includes a current 17-game winning streak. The only loss came on Sept. 2, 2000, to Ohio State. Otherwise, the Wildcats have outscored their opponents 649-201 over the 17 victories, which averages out to a 38-12 score. Included in those 17 victories was a thrilling win over this week s opponent, BYU. On Sept. 2, 2006, Arizona kicker Nick Folk drilled a 48-yard field goal with one second remaining to give the Wildcats a 16-13 victory. Cats & Cougs: Arizona holds a 12-10-1 edge in the all-time series, which dates back to 1936. While the two schools were regular Western Athletic Conference rivals during the 1960s and 70s, they went nearly 30 years between meetings once the Wildcats left for the Pac-12 Conference. The four meetings since then have all come in the last decade, with Arizona winning at home in 2006 and at the Las Vegas Bowl in 2008, while BYU earned victories in Provo in 2007 and then in Glendale, Ariz., in 2016. All-time, Arizona is 8-5-1 against BYU in Tucson. Foe Turned Friend: After several stints at Pac-12 rival programs, the Wildcats are excited to welcome offensive coordinator Noel Mazzone to Tucson. While he follows Kevin Sumlin from Texas A&M (2016-17), he s previously served as the offensive coordinator at Oregon State (2002), Arizona State (2010-11) and UCLA (2012-15), with his Pac-10/12 teams beating Arizona in all but one of those seasons (2011 at ASU). Going back further, Mazzone was an offensive assistant at Colorado State in the 1980s, though the Wildcats did earn a couple wins. His playing career was at New Mexico, one of Arizona s rivals from the WAC years, from 1975-79, thus he s no stranger to the Cardinal and Navy. But this is his first time donning the colors and Arizona is excited to have him. In addition to play-calling duties as a coordinator, Mazzone has a proven track record of developing quarterbacks for the next level. In 2017, three of Mazzone s pupils started games in the NFL, including Philip Rivers, Brett Hundley and Brock Osweiler. He has also coached Josh Rosen, a first round pick of the Cardinals in 2018, Jason Campbell and Kelly Stouffer, among other notable signal callers. Next up is Khalil Tate and the rest of the Wildcats quarterbacks. 4 2018 Arizona Football Game 1 vs. BYU

Guess Who s Back: Defensive coordinator Marcel Yates is hoping the third time is a charm. Now in his third season as Arizona s defensive coordinator, Yates is reunited with Kevin Sumlin, who hired to be a co-defensive coordinator at Texas A&M in 2012-13. Yates was tabbed the interim head coach for the Wildcats in January, receiving strong support from players to be considered for the head coaching position. With the ultimate offer going to Sumlin, it was a perfect opportunity for Yates to remain on staff and finish what he started. Upon his arrival from Boise State, Yates inherited a depleted and talent-starved defensive unit. He knew it was going to be a three-year process before he had a chance to trot out a defense that resembled what he had at Boise State and at Texas A&M. Year one focused on recruiting, and the Wildcats found some future playmakers. Last year those players arrived and while the size and depth wasn t there up front, Arizona was one of the national leaders in turning teams over. They held strong enough to win seven games and go to bowl in Yates second year. Now Year 3 is when Yates hopes to make the biggest improvement. The front seven is bigger and deeper than it has been in years, and the back end has experienced playmakers. While Arizona is still another recruiting class away from the optimal depth, Yates is now confident he can fully run the scheme he brought with him in 2016. Khalil Tate in Perspective: Perhaps no player in program history has received more preseason national attention than true junior quarterback Khalil Tate. But for all the ridiculous stats, electrifying highlights and any other Sports Illustrated cover-worthy accolades you can think of, consider these quick facts: Khalil Tate is 19 years old (turns 20 in late October). He s the son of a school teacher (father, Brian) and pharmacy assistant (mother, Lesli). He was a Pac-12 All-Academic honorable mention selection in 2017. And he s started only nine college football games. Tate by the Numbers: Khalil Tate played in 11 games as a sophomore, starting the final nine contests for the Wildcats. Along the way, he led Arizona to a four-game win streak and emerged as a semifinalist for the Davey O Brien, Maxwell and Manning Awards. Below are some of the most significant notes and numbers to put his season in perspective: 1,411... Fourth-most rushing yards in UA single-season history 1,000... First Pac-12 QB to rush for 1,000 yards in a season 327... Set FBS single-game rushing record for a QB vs. Colorado 128.3...Ranked seventh nationally among all players in rushing yards per game 70...Led all FBS players with five rushes of 70+ yards, including four TDs 10...Ranked 10th nationally in passing average per attempt (8.9 yards) 9.22... Led all FBS players in average yards per rush 4...First player in Pac-10/12 history to win four straight Pac-12 Player of the Week Awards 2...Ranked second in nation behind Baker Mayfield for total QBR 1...First player in program history with three 200-yard rushing games in a season Touchdown Tate: Khalil Tate is known for his explosiveness, but even highlight reels may struggle to put into perspective how spectacular his big-play ability truly is. Just last season, Tate accounted for 26 touchdowns. He averaged 47.7 yards on his 12 rushing touchdowns, 28.6 yards on 14 passing touchdowns and 37.4 yards on all 26 touchdowns accounted for. While he had just four touchdowns in limited action as a freshman, his career touchdown stats look like this: Khalil Tate Career Yards on Touchdown Plays Total Yards on Touchdowns: 1,083 Average per Touchdown: 36.1 yards Total Rushing Yards on TD: 575 Average Per Rushing TD: 44.2 Total Passing Yards on TD: 508 Average Per TD Pass: 29.9 Points, Points and More Points: Arizona proved to be one of the prolific offenses in college football in 2017 and welcomes plenty back from that attack. The Wildcats scored 537 points last season, which established a program record. Arizona scored 496 points in 2012, which was the previous record, meaning Arizona topped the 500-point mark last season for the first time in school history.. Arizona scored at least 28 points in 11 of 13 games last season and at least 24 points in 12 of 13. Arizona also established a new school record by scoring 45 or more points in four straight games and 35 or more in six straight. Only six teams in the country last year scored more points and three of them played 14 games compared to Arizona s 13. Arizona s 41.3 points per game ranked fifth in the country and tops in the Pac- 12 and third among Power 5 schools. Back from that attack are Khalil Tate (607 total snaps), Shun Brown (724 snaps), Shawn Poindexter (710 snaps), Bryce Wolma (566 snaps), Tony Ellison (523 snaps), JJ Taylor (440 snaps) and others. Schooler, who finished with 95 tackles, 13.5 tackles-for-loss, four sacks and a pair of interceptions, was named Freshman All-American by ESPN.com, USA Today, Football Writers Association of America, 247 Sports and College Football News. Fields, who led Arizona, with 104 tackles, while also adding 7.5 tackles-for-loss and five sacks, was recognized by ESPN.com and 247 Sports. Wilborn, who led Arizona with 7.5 sacks and had 9.5 tacklesfor-loss was named to the FWAA and USA Today squads. Combined, the three freshmen played 2,356 snaps for the Wildcats last season. More on Schooler: The middle linebacker from Dana Point, California was named the Pac- 12 Defensive Freshman of the Year last season for the breakout season he had. Making Schooler s season and numbers even more impressive is the fact that he didn t make his first start until Week 5 at Colorado. Schooler had just seven tackles in Arizona s first three games of the season against NAU, Houston and UTEP. But as the competition got better, so did Schooler. He had 88 tackles over Arizona s nine conference games and the Foster Farms Bowl matchup with Purdue. His most productive game came on the road at Cal when he had 14 tackles and broke up a pass on a two-point conversion in double overtime to secure a 45-44 win for the Wildcats. Schooler s 13.5 tackles-for-loss last season ranked first among all NCAA freshmen. Boise State s Curtis Weaver finished with 13 to fall right behind Schooler. Fields finished second to Northwestern s Paddy Fisher in total tackles by a freshman last season. Fields had his most productive game in the finale against Purdue in the Foster Farms Bowl when he totaled 13 solo tackles. The Las Vegas native showed no sign of slowing down as the season progressed, totaling 31 tackles over his final three games of the season. Who s Down With DFF?: As Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles prepares for his senior season, he does so never missing a game during his first three seasons. Flannigan-Fowles, a local product from Mountain View High School and Tucson High, has played in all 38 games in his career, never missing a contest. The senior has become a model of consistency and how experience for the Arizona defense, which still features a number of underclassmen. Flannigan-Fowles had a career-high 81 tackles last season and is now 13 short of 200 for his career at 187. Flannigan-Fowles had three interceptions, three pass breakups and two fumble recoveries to go with his 81 tackles. He has started 25 games in a row for the Wildcats. Flannigan-Fowles has been especially productive against non-conference opponents with all six of his career interceptions coming outside Pac-12 play. Jumpin Jace: One of the most productive defensive backs in the Pac-12 last season, Jace Whittaker has had a stellar career for the Wildcats through his first three seasons. Whittaker had a career-high 13 pass breakups last season, which tied for second in the Pac-12 behind Oregon s Arrion Springs. Whittaker has 24 pass breakups over his past two seasons, which is the most by a Wildcat over a two-year span since Devin Ross had 25 over the 2008 and 2009 seasons. For his career, Whittaker has 28 career pass breakups, which is tied with Trevin Wade and Randy Robbins for ninth all-time at Arizona. He has 32 career passes defended with four interceptions in his career, three of which came last season. Whittaker was a second-team All-Pac-12 pick by Pro Football Focus and was recognized statistically for his strong coverage skills. Pro Football Focus gave Whittaker an overall grade of 85.85 last year, which is considered elite by their metrics and was the highest grade by any Arizona defender. Whittaker played 980 snaps last season, which led the Wildcats. Arizona s Career Passes Broken Up Leaders 1. Michael Jolivette, 2000-03: 44 2. Chuck Cecil, 1984-87: 38 3. Cornerback Lorenzo Burns finished as Arizona s third leading tackler with 81 stops in his redshirt freshman season. Burns also led Arizona in interceptions with five, marking the most by an Arizona defender since Trevin Wade also had five in 2009. Burns started all 13 games for the Wildcats last season and got better as the season went on. Burns had four of his five interceptions in the final seven games of the season. He had eight tackles, an interception and a pass breakup in the regular season finale at Arizona State. He then added six tackles and a sack in the bowl game versus Purdue. Burns tied for second in the nation in interceptions by a freshman with his five. First and foremost, he led the Wildcats with 43 receptions last year and was also the team leader in touchdowns with six. He finished with 573 yards second to Tony Ellison and proved to be a big-play threat, totaling 13 plays that went for 20 or more yards. Brown hauled in two pass plays from Khalil Tate that went for more than 50 yards. He was also dynamic as a punt returner. Brown averaged 10.6 yards per return and two punt returns go for touchdowns. His 10.6 yards per return ranked 15th in the country and third in the Pac-12 behind Washington s Dante Pettis and Utah s Boobie Hobbs. Pro Football Focus gave Brown a season grade of 78.6, which just misses the very good category. Interestingly, Brown s 86.9 grade in discipline penalties was the best by any Arizona skill player and considered elite by PFF. That takes into account false starts, offsides, personal fouls and other similar penalties. Additionally, Brown s 724 snaps played last year were the most by an Arizona skill player. In fact, Pro Football Focus counts Ellison as one of only four Power 5 receivers who was targeted 50 or more times last year and didn t commit a single drop. Ellison s PFF grade of 81.5 was the third-highest grade given out to an Arizona offensive player and is considered very good. Ellison finished the year with 37 catches for a teamhigh 598 yards and five touchdowns. He started seven of the team s 13 games a year ago. He notched the first 100-yard game of his career in the Foster Farms Bowl, catching four passes for 102 yards against Purdue. It was also the first multiple-touchdown game of his career as he hauled in two touchdowns from Khalil Tate. A New Standard: Arizona finished last season with 4,021 rushing yards, which is a new program record for rushing yards in a season. The previous mark was 3,444 set in 2013 when Ka Deem Carey led the nation in rushing with 1,929 yards. The 2013 season is the only other time the Wildcats have rushed for more than 3,000 yards. Arizona s 48 rushing touchdowns from a year ago also established a new school record, besting the previous high of 36, also set in 2013. The 48 touchdowns were third in the country behind Florida Atlantic (14 games) and Army. It was the most by a Power 5 program by six touchdowns. The 4,021 rushing yards ranked third in the country behind traditional option schools Army and Navy. Arizona s 6.56 yards per carry led the country. The Wildcats, of course, benefited from Khalil Tate s 9.2 yards per carry last season on 153 carries. Quarterback Khalil Tate led the Wildcats with 1,411 yards. But J.J. Taylor led all Arizona running backs with 847 yards, averaging 5.8 yards per carry. Taylor was named Co-Pac-12 Offensive Freshman of the Year for his efforts. Taylor played in all 13 games last year, after having his true freshman season cut short in 2016 after breaking his ankle in the fourth game of the season. Taylor s 847 yards are the second-most ever by an Arizona freshman, trailing his former teammate Nick Wilson, who had 1,375 yards as a freshman in 2014. Taylor also proved to be a passing target in the red zone catching a pair of touchdowns on 12 total receptions. Taylor s season got better as it went on last year. He had at least 50 yards in six of his last eight games, including a 153-yard output against Washington State and 129 yards against Oregon State. Hough and Puff: Arizona welcomes some help in the secondary this year in UNLV graduate transfer Tim Hough (rhymes with rough). Hough had a strong three years in Las Vegas, proving to be one of the better defensive backs in the Mountain West. Hough had four interceptions in 2015 as a freshman to go with four pass breakups and 32 total tackles. He was named a Freshman All-American for his efforts. He played in all 24 of UNLV s games over the next two seasons, not seeing much action as teams stayed away from him after the booming start to his career. He finished his UNLV career with 79 total tackles, 12 passes defended and four interceptions. He will add depth to the cornerback position with Lorenzo Burns and Jace Whittaker. National Radio Broadcast: Saturday s season opener pitting Arizona and BYU will be broadcast nationally by Sports USA Radio, John Ahlers will have the play-by-play call, while Doug Plank will provide analysis. Up Next: Arizona hits the road to visit Houston on Saturday, Sept. 8. Kickoff is set for 11 a.m. (CDT) with a reverse mirror television broadcast on ABC/ESPN2. The Wildcats then return home to close out non-conference play against Southern Utah on Saturday, Sept. 15. The Pac-12 Network will televise the game at 8 p.m. MST. 8 2018 Arizona Football Game 1 vs. BYU

(AP) Kalani Sitake faced a difficult decision in his debut as BYU s coach. He could send out Rhett Almond to attempt a game-winning kick despite the sophomore missing a field and an extra point earlier in the game or turn to freshman Jake Oldroyd. Sitake went with the freshman, with an assist to special teams coach Ed Lamb, and it worked out perfectly for the Cougars. Oldroyd kicked a 33-yard field goal with 4 seconds left and Jamaal Williams ran for 162 yards, helping BYU rally to beat Arizona 18-16 on Saturday night. After the field goal and PAT we had earlier; I wouldn t say it was a good time to do it, but I felt comfortable with Jake being in that position, Sitake said. BYU sputtered at times, but pulled out a victory to start a brutal opening stretch of the season. Williams looked like he never left after sitting out last season due to personal reasons, carrying 29 times to spark BYU s offense. Taysom Hill was sharp after missing most of last season with a foot injury, hitting 21 of 29 passes for 202 yards and a touchdown. It still was tight. Arizona s Nick Wilson scored on a 49-yard run with 1:26 left and the Wildcats failed on the 2-point conversion, giving the Cougars a final chance at University of Phoenix Stadium. BYU started its final drive on its own 31 and quickly moved down the field to set up Oldroyd s kick. The freshman split the uprights, raised his arms and ran toward BYU s sideline after hitting a winning kick in his first career game. We were calm the whole time, Hill said of the final drive. We knew we had a great opportunity. Arizona went through a difficult fall camp, trying to focus on football after offensive lineman Zach Hemmila was found dead in his apartment on Aug. 8. Arizona coach Rich Rodriguez joined Hemmila s family with athletic director Greg Byrne and offensive line coach Jim Michalczik for a pre-game ceremony that include a highlight video. The Wildcats had plenty of questions heading into the season, the big one being who will start at quarterback. Anu Solomon got the start after a tight battle with sophomore Brandon Dawkins that started in spring, but struggled against BYU s defensive pressure up front for most of the game. This one is on me, said Solomon, who threw for 213 yards on 20-of-30 passing. I have to play better. He wasn t alone. Arizona Notebook Arizona held BYU scoreless in the first quarter, which marked the ninth straight time the Cats have held their opponent scoreless in the first quarter of the season opener. The last time an opponent scored in the first quarter of a season opener was 2007 when BYU scored seven points in the first frame. Neither team got on the scoreboard in the first quarter. It s the first time the Wildcats have played a scoreless first quarter since 2011 at Oregon State. Oregon State won that game 37-27. Senior receiver Nate Phillips had gamehighs in catches (seven) and yards (69). Phillips has now caught at least one pass in 35 consecutive games dating back to his freshman season. Nick Wilson had 138 yards and two touchdowns on 17 carries. Wilson now has 11 100- yard rushing games in his career. It s his first 100-yard rushing output since 9/26/15 against UCLA. 9 Tell them... tell the team to bear down. John Byrd Button Salmon, 1926 9

Kevin Sumlin, a three-time national Coach of the Year finalist, was named Arizona s 32nd head coach on Jan. 14, 2018. He was formally introduced at a press conference on Jan. 16. Sumlin comes to Arizona after serving as the head football coach at Texas A&M University for the past six seasons (2012-17), compiling a 51-26 record including three bowl victories. He also served as the head coach at the University of Houston for four seasons (2008-11), amassing a 35-17 record. In his 10 seasons as a head coach, Sumlin has compiled an 86-43 record and his teams have played in bowl games in nine of those seasons. During his time at Texas A&M, Sumlin averaged over eight victories per season and won at least seven games each year, while competing in what many believe to be the toughest division in college football, the SEC West. His 44 wins over his first five seasons in College Station marked the second-fastest coaching start in school history, behind R.C. Slocum s 49 wins from 1989-93. Sumlin was the first Aggie head coach to lead his first six teams to a bowl game, and Sumlin s teams improved the Aggies school record streak of consecutive seasons with a bowl game appearance to nine. His three bowl victories are tied for the most in school history. In addition, Sumlin guided Johnny Manziel to a stellar freshman season that saw him throw for 3,419 yards and 24 TDs, while running for 1,181 yards and 19 TDs en route to the 2012 Heisman Trophy. Despite his defensive background as a linebacker at Purdue in the mid-1980s, it s been his offenses that have been his calling card as a head coach. In Sumlin s six seasons in the SEC, his offenses led the conference in passing, scoring and total offense twice. His 2012 edition became the first to break the 7,000- yard plateau in total offense with 7,261 yards, and his 2013 unit was just a yard shy of the milestone. Texas A&M owns SEC season records for passing yards (4,593 in 2013), total yards and average total offense (7,261/558.5 in 2012) and first downs (357 in 2013). In his 10 seasons as a head coach, Sumlin s offenses have averaged more than 400 yards of total offense every season, including more than 500 yards five times. His teams have scored more than 500 points five times, including an incredible 690 points in 2011. Sumlin was hired at Texas A&M after a successful stint as head coach at the University of Houston. His final Cougar squad set a school record with 13 victories (12 prior to Sumlin s departure to Texas A&M) in 2011 and notched the program s highest finish in the Bowl Championship Series standings. He was named the Region 5 Coach of the Year by the American Football Coaches Association that year and was one of five finalists for the AFCA s National Coach of the Year award. Sumlin guided the Cougars to berths in the 2011 Ticket Center Bowl and the 2008 and 2009 Bell Helicopter Armed Forces Bowls.
