Austin Latin CONVENTION! REGISTRATION DEADLINE: Monday, January 30 th What is it? The Texas Junior Classical League Area F (Austin Area) Convention! Why should I go? Join your Murchison Latin Club to represent the Matadors as we compete against other Latin students in Austin-area schools! This is a FUN event and a great opportunity to win certificates and ribbons as well as make new friends! When? Saturday, February 25, 2017. This is an all-day event that will start around 8am and end around 5pm. PLEASE NOTE: The most important events (i.e. academic, speaking, athletic, and art contests) take place in the morning and early afternoon (8am-2pm). There will be an awards ceremony during the afternoon (tentatively scheduled at 4pm). If you are unable to stay for the afternoon, I ll pick up your awards for you. Where? Westwood High School, 12400 Mellow Meadow Drive, Austin, TX 78750 How do I get there? The school does not provide buses for this event students need to make arrangements for their own transportation. If parents are interested in helping with carpooling, please let Magistra Potter know and I ll share their name and contact information with attending students and their parents. How much will this cost? $10 covers registration. Students will have the option to either pack their own lunch and snacks or pre-order a meal. Consider this You will have a better chance of placing and winning an award if you choose to compete in a less popular contest such as Greek History or Geography & Monuments. 2 The Decathlon test will cover Grammar; Vocabulary; Roman Life; Roman History; Latin Literature; Mythology; Reading Comprehension; Mottoes, Phrases, and Abbreviations; Latin Derivatives; and Geography and Monuments of the Ancient World. It s not longer than the other tests but rather covers a variety of topics.
Speaking Contests: All students who register must volunteer for one speaking contest. A description of each is listed below. Sight Recitation Dramatic Interpretation Boys Dramatic Interpretation Girls Latin Oratory Students will be judged on their ability to read a neverbefore-seen passage in Latin with appropriate expression and pronunciation. Students will be given 10 minutes to prepare for this. No memorization required. Students will memorize (weeks ahead of time) an assigned Latin text. They will be judged on their ability to speak in Latin as well as portray the character/scene with gestures and acting. No costumes nor props.
