Fitness Eating Through The Holidays By Emily Bell, MS, CN The next few months carry a lot of emotions, feelings, and actions. Some of you really struggle during this time, possibly missing a loved one. Others of you relish this time of year, celebrating the holidays and spending extra time with those that are dear. And for some of you feel both emotions. But I find that, no matter what your situation is, the holidays can be a challenging time around food. We turn to food to celebrate, and we turn to food when lonely and mourning. This can be even harder if you are stressed, or what if you are trying to lose weight? According to WebMD, 45 million people are trying to lose weight each year (many of them more than once). Before January hits and you are trying to pick up the pieces, let s take a look at what you can do now. I suggest a different approach to the holidays, one where you are not feeling like you need to get back on track come January and one that leaves you with less guilt over the next few months. Here are Shake Up the Routine a few things to keep in mind when approaching food this season. Everything in moderation: There may be an abundance of foods that you normally don t eat. Enjoy a few but balance out your plate with fruits and vegetables. Plan to succeed: One of the mistakes I see clients make is saving up for a party or not eating enough during the day. Evenings are a hard time, holiday party or not. You will make much better choices with something in your belly. I repeat, do not skip lunch because you have a big dinner party coming! Eat a smaller, protein packed lunch. It s never too late to get back on track: so you overindulged, that s ok. Our bodies are powerful machines that can handle that once in a while. Guilt can cause an increase in stress hormones which hamper your body s ability to metabolize those extras. Move on, get out of the cycle. I ve got a lot of tricks to make these things work for you specifically. Come to the workshop November 21 at 11 11:45 am to get more inspiration or set up a personalized session. I look forward to helping you navigate through the next few months. There is no better way to shake up your workout routine and stay fit over the holiday season than participating in our small group training program known as IMPACT. New for November and December, Functional Ex. will switch to Ski & Snowboarding Conditioning to get you prepped for the mountain season. Whether you ski, snowboard or just want to get a fun new workout this 30 minute class is for you. Please refer to our class schedule posted both online and at the Club for fall schedule changes. Any questions can be directed to Assistant Fitness Director Cody Bludorn, Cody@bainbridgeathleticclub.com *Free Classes during the Holiday Bazaar November 20-21st* $35/monthly for unlimited classes! 3 November/December 2013
