It s always an exciting time of the year for our sport and our guys are focused and ready to compete. The reward for the hard work this season is that we now have a great opportunity to compete for a championship. It just doesn t get any better than that. GAMECOCK Four-Straight NCAA Championship Appearances (2013-16) GamecockMGolf 1

HISTORY AT NCAA REGIONALS The Gamecocks will be making their 26th all-time appearance at NCAA Regionals since 1988, and their 11th trip in 12 seasons under head coach Bill McDonald. Carolina will be seeking its first appearance back at nationals since a program-record four-straight trips from 2013-16. McDonald helped lead South Carolina to its highest finish ever at the NCAA Championship in 2016, as the team advanced to match play for the first time in program history and finished T-5th. The Gamecocks have advanced to the NCAA Championship six times in 10 previous regional appearances under McDonald. Serving as the interim head coach, McDonald led Carolina to the 2007 NCAA West Regional Title, the program s first and only regional championship. Three-time All-American Kyle Thompson, who is currently playing on the PGA TOUR, earned individual medalist honors at NCAA Regionals two times (1999, 2001). Fellow three-time All-American Matt NeSmith came close to joining Thompson as the program s only individual regional champions in 2016, earning runner-up medalist honors at the NCAA Tuscaloosa Regional. BRYAN REGIONAL FIELD All 14 teams in the SEC, the nation s premier college golf conference, are in the NCAA Regional field, a first for the conference. Five of those teams, top-seeded Texas A&M, No. 4 seed Kentucky, No. 6 seed Ole Miss, No. 9 seed Georgia and No. 10 seed Mississippi State, will be playing alongside Carolina this week at the Traditions Club. No. 11 Baylor and No. 14 Clemson join the second ranked Aggies and 23rd ranked Wildcats as the top-25 teams in the field based off the latest Golfstat Team Rankings. Five more teams, including the Gamecocks (No. 38) are ranked in the top-50 of the latest poll, released on May 2, 2018. HUSKEY WINS ALL-AMERICAN INTERCOLLEGIATE Senior team captain Keenan Huskey played lights out golf en route to medalist honors in the team s first event of the spring, the All-American Intercollegiate in Humble Texas, Feb. 16-18. The Greenville, S.C., native, shot a tournament record 201 (-15), fending off defending NCAA Individual Champion Braden Thornberry of Ole Miss in the final round. Thornberry is ranked No. 1 in the World Amateur Golf Rankings. Huskey recorded zero bogeys in the tournament and led the field with 18 birdies. His 201 ties him for the fourth lowest score in school history. The 2017 All-American is now tied with Matt NeSmith and Carl Paulson for second on the all-time wins list with four career victories. Fellow 2017 All-SEC and PING All-Region selection Keenan Huskey bounced back from a tough start to the fall in the seasonopener at The Farm (Sept. 8-10) to finish in the top-15 individually at the team s next four events. His two top-10s were second on the team as he finished with a 71.40 scoring average during the fall slate. He tied for second on the team with eight rounds of par or better. MCDONALD S 21 Gamecock head coach Bill McDonald is the winningest coach by tournament victories in school history with 21. McDonald broke the previous record of nine held by Puggy Blackmon (1995-2007) with Carolina s win at the Carpet Capital Collegiate in September 2014. McDonald captured a school-record five wins in 2014-15 and the team s thirdstraight title at the 2017 Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate last spring. His latest win came this fall at the 2017 Camden Collegiate Invitational as Carolina won the event for the third time in four seasons thanks to three individual top-10 finishes. 2007 NCAA West Regional Champions South Carolina finishes 44-under-par to set course record en route to program s first regional title TEMPE, Ariz. Behind a record-breaking performance, the South Carolina men s golf team claimed a two-stroke victory over UCLA to win the 2007 NCAA West Regional at Karsten Golf Course (Par 72, 7,057 yards) in Tempe, Ariz. The Gamecocks recorded a three-round score of 820 to finish 44 strokes under par and set a course record. The guys were focused all week and nothing fazed them, South Carolina associate head coach Bill McDonald said. I kept talking about winning the tournament, not so much advancing (to the NCAA finals). I wanted them to taste victory. I felt like we were good enough to win earlier in the season. We had some opportunities and didn t get it done. I am proud of the effort they gave. South Carolina entered the final round one stroke behind regional leader and No. 4 UCLA. The Gamecocks shot 10-under par (278) as a team Saturday to beat the Bruins, who were seven under (281). No. 10 Southern California and No. 18 Arizona State, the regional host, shared third place with a final score of 824 (-40). Fellow Southeastern Conference team Vanderbilt caught fire on Saturday, finishing the third round at 21 under to surge into fifth place. It was the first regional title for the Gamecocks, who reached the top 10 in three of the previous four NCAA Regionals. In 1999, South Carolina fell just shy of the East Regional title, finishing second in Barrington, R.I., despite Kyle Thompson s individual victory at the event. The Gamecocks, who entered the tournament as the No. 11 seed, held a slight lead on UCLA for most of the final day, and freshman George Bryan IV s strong finish secured the win. The last player on the course for South Carolina, Bryan eagled No. 17 and sank a 40-foot putt for birdie on No. 18. The Chapin, S.C, product tied for 10th individually with a three-day total of 68-67-69=204 (-12). His tournament total of 204 tied him for fourth place in school history for a three-round individual score and was the best individual performance ever by a Gamecock in regional play. Bryan s 10th-place finish was the best by a Carolina golfer since Thompson won the 2001 NCAA West Regional in Corvalis, Ore. Sophomore Florian Fritsch and junior Mark Anderson tied for 16th on the individual leader board after posting three-day totals of 206 (-10), which tied for the eighth-best three-round effort in school history. Anderson closed with a 70 (-2) on the final 18 holes, while Fritsch carded a 71 (-1) Saturday. Sophomore Mark Silvers III fired a final round 69, and junior Warren Thomas posted a 70 on the final 18 holes. Silvers and Thomas both tied for 43rd with a three-day total score of 211 (-5). I noticed early on that both teams (South Carolina and UCLA) seemed tight, McDonald said. It really helped us that Mark Silvers got off to such a good start. He made a couple of birdies early and made the turn at 32 (four under par). I think when our guys started to see the board and that we had a lead, that really helped. We got a burst of energy on the back nine knowing we had a chance to win. As a team, South Carolina opened with a George Bryan IV NCAA HISTORY Warren Thomas, Mark Silvers III, coach Bill McDonald, Florian Fritsch, Mark Anderson, George Bryan IV, assistant coach Michael Burcin. State 278-277-284=839 Oregon State 281-275-283=839 round of 273 on Thursday before shooting 269 on Friday. Those scores are among the five lowest rounds in school history. The team victory was the first for South Carolina since capturing the title at the 2005 Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate (Oct. 15-16). In 2007, the Gamecocks previous best performance was fourth place on three occasions. I told the team in a meeting a little while ago that this will mean more to them as the years go by, McDonald said of winning the title. It will really mean a lot. To me, it gives our program validity. Instead of just talking about what we want to do, we went out and did it. It will really help from a recruiting and coaching standpoint. The more they win, the more they will believe and expect to play this way. That will develop tradition and have a long-lasting effect.
