Both players have career momentum, each having reclaimed spots in the Top 10 during the year. The head-to-head record between them, however, belies their closeness in the rankings: del Potro has won all six of their prior meetings. Anderson is currently amid an eight-match winning streak, having won his most recent event, the New York Open. The South African is enjoying his first week at a new career-high ranking of No. 8, spurred on by the New York title and a runner-up showing at Pune already this season, as well as a run to the first Grand Slam final of his career at the 2017 US Open. The ace leader of the tournament (57 in four matches) raced through the early rounds, dispatching Radu Albot, Adrian Mannarino, and Hyeon Chung in straight sets en route to the semifinals. The South African then survived a battle from American Jared Donaldson, ultimately prevailing in 2 hours and 22 minutes to reach his third final of the year. Anderson might look back on his previous experience in the Acapulco final in 2014, which he lost to Grigor Dimitrov in a final-set tiebreak, as something which could give him the edge against a player he has never defeated. If Anderson can beat del Potro for the first time, he will take home his second ATP World Tour singles title of the year, and the fifth of his career overall. In the final, del Potro will be facing his third consecutive Top 10 opponent all three of whom have yet to beat the Argentine on tour. The World No. 9 opened the event with a win over Mischa Zverev, before knocking out four-time Acapulco champion David Ferrer in the longest match of the tournament (2 hours and 24 minutes) in the second round. His run against the Top 10 started in the quarter-finals, where he picked up his first Top 10 win of the year over World No. 6 Dominic Thiem, defeating the Austrian for the fourth time in their four meetings. This was followed by del Potro s first Top 5 win of the year over World No. 5 Alexander Zverev, extending his head-to-head record against the German to 2-0. It has been a welcome return to a final for Del Potro, who reached the championship match in his first event of the year at Auckland (l. to Bautista Agut), but then fell in the third round of the Australian Open to Tomas Berdych, and lost in the second round at Delray Beach to eventual champion Frances Tiafoe (who del Potro had beaten in straight sets in the first round of the Australian Open).
