Both players have career momentum, each having reclaimed spots in the Top 10 during the year. The head-to-head record between them, however, belies their closeness in the rankings: del Potro has won all six of their prior meetings. Anderson is currently amid an eight-match winning streak, having won his most recent event, the New York Open. The South African is enjoying his first week at a new career-high ranking of No. 8, spurred on by the New York title and a runner-up showing at Pune already this season, as well as a run to the first Grand Slam final of his career at the 2017 US Open. The ace leader of the tournament (57 in four matches) raced through the early rounds, dispatching Radu Albot, Adrian Mannarino, and Hyeon Chung in straight sets en route to the semifinals. The South African then survived a battle from American Jared Donaldson, ultimately prevailing in 2 hours and 22 minutes to reach his third final of the year. Anderson might look back on his previous experience in the Acapulco final in 2014, which he lost to Grigor Dimitrov in a final-set tiebreak, as something which could give him the edge against a player he has never defeated. If Anderson can beat del Potro for the first time, he will take home his second ATP World Tour singles title of the year, and the fifth of his career overall. In the final, del Potro will be facing his third consecutive Top 10 opponent all three of whom have yet to beat the Argentine on tour. The World No. 9 opened the event with a win over Mischa Zverev, before knocking out four-time Acapulco champion David Ferrer in the longest match of the tournament (2 hours and 24 minutes) in the second round. His run against the Top 10 started in the quarter-finals, where he picked up his first Top 10 win of the year over World No. 6 Dominic Thiem, defeating the Austrian for the fourth time in their four meetings. This was followed by del Potro s first Top 5 win of the year over World No. 5 Alexander Zverev, extending his head-to-head record against the German to 2-0. It has been a welcome return to a final for Del Potro, who reached the championship match in his first event of the year at Auckland (l. to Bautista Agut), but then fell in the third round of the Australian Open to Tomas Berdych, and lost in the second round at Delray Beach to eventual champion Frances Tiafoe (who del Potro had beaten in straight sets in the first round of the Australian Open). Del Potro now has a chance to win the 21st ATP World Tour singles title of his career. On Grand Stand Caliente, the doubles final will take place when defending champions Jamie Murray and Bruno Soares meet Bob and Mike Bryan, the 2002 and 2004 champions in Acapulco. The two teams, both multiple-grand Slam winners, are each searching for their first title of the year. For the Bryans, it would be the identical twins 115th ATP World Tour doubles title as a team. All four remaining athletes will play on Friday in hopes of continuing their campaigns to win the Acapulco title for the first time, as a new champion is guaranteed to be crowned. The first semi-final on Cancha Central will be between No. 5 seed Kevin Anderson of South Africa and unseeded American Jared Donaldson. Both players come into the semi-finals without having dropped a set in the tournament. Anderson, a finalist here in 2014 and the 2017 US Open runner-up, is enjoying his first week at a new career-high ranking of World No. 8. The South African is hoping to reach his third final of the year after a title at New York and a runner-up finish at Pune. Meanwhile, Donaldson hit a milestone after his quarter-final win over Feliciano Lopez, as victory over the Spaniard propelled the 21-year-old into the very first ATP World Tour semi-final of his career. If Donaldson were to beat Anderson, it would be the first Top 10 win of the American s career. Anderson won the sole prior match between the two, on clay at Geneva last year. The later semi-final pits 2nd-seeded German Alexander Zverev against No. 6 seed Juan Martin del Potro of Argentina, in a matchup between two Top 10 players. 20-year-old Zverev, ranked 5th in the world, has reached his first semi-final of the year in Acapulco, and has not faced a Top 10 opponent this year on the ATP World Tour prior to this match. For World No. 9 del Potro, this is his second semi-final of the season, after a runner-up finish at Auckland in January. This is also del Potro s second consecutive match against a player ranked higher than him: the Argentine dispatched No. 3 seed and World No. 6 Dominic Thiem in the quarter-finals, which was his fourth victory over Thiem in four matches. Del Potro won his only previous meeting with Zverev in three tight sets in the third round at Shanghai last year. The day opens with Spaniard Feliciano Lopez taking on American Jared Donaldson for a spot in the final four. 36-year-old Lopez is the oldest player in the entire main draw field, but he is still going strong, with two quarter-final showings so far in 2018, and less than a year removed from his biggest career singles title at London/Queen s Club. Donaldson, who qualified for the Next Gen ATP Finals last year, is one of three players under 22 years old who is still alive in the tournament. The youngest player remaining in the draw is also the highest-ranked player left: 20-year-old German Alexander Zverev, the World No. 5 and 2nd seed in Acapulco. The winner of five titles last year, including ATP World Tour Masters 1000 events at Rome and Montreal, Zverev has now reached his first quarter-final of the season. Zverev will face American Ryan Harrison in the last eight. Harrison has had a strong start to the year, reaching the third ATP World Tour singles final of his career at Brisbane during the first week of the season. This week, the American defeated two Top 20 players in his first two rounds: No. 19 John Isner in his opening match, and No. 18 Diego Schwartzman in the second round. 21-year-old Hyeon Chung of South Korea will square off against 5th-seeded South African Kevin Anderson, in a match featuring two players who have had recent Grand Slam breakthroughs. Chung became the first Korean man to advance past the fourth round at a major when he made the semi-finals at the Australian Open in January, a run which included his first Top 10 win over Alexander Zverev. Anderson went one better at the US Open last year, reaching the first Grand Slam final of his career and becoming the first South African to make the US Open championship match in the Open Era. Anderson was also a finalist in Acapulco in 2014. Rounding out singles play for the day is a battle between two Top 10 stars, 3rd-seeded Austrian Dominic Thiem and No. 6 seed Juan Martin del Potro of Argentina. Del Potro has emerged victorious in all three of their prior meetings, most notably in their epic encounter in the fourth round of the US Open last year, where the Argentine came back from a two-set deficit to get past Thiem in three hours and 34 minutes, saving two match points in the process. Del Potro will again need to summon his best to defeat Thiem for a fourth straight time, as the Austrian has an excellent 9-1 win-loss record in Acapulco over the last three years, including a championship victory in 2016. Thiem, the No. 3 seed from Austria, will square off against #NextGenATP player Denis Shapovalov of Canada in Wednesday s first ATP World Tour match on Cancha Central. Thiem is 8-1 over the last three years in Acapulco, backing up his run to the title in 2016 with a quarter-final finish last year. Shapovalov, the youngest player in the field at age 18, made a sparkling debut in Acapulco yesterday with a win over former runner-up Kei Nishikori. Following that match on the main court is the all-german affair between No. 2 seed Alexander Zverev and Peter Gojowczyk. World No. 5 Zverev is now the highest-ranked player left in the draw, after top-seeded Rafael Nadal withdrew yesterday due to a persistent hip injury. Despite his stellar ranking, Zverev has yet to reach a quarter-final this year, and hopes to turn that around against his compatriot. By contrast, Gojowczyk has reached three quarter-finals already this year, including a runner-up finish at Delray Beach last week. Zverev has won their only prior encounter, which was earlier this year at the Australian Open. The final match on Cancha Central will be a titanic tussle between four-time champion Ferrer, from Spain, and Argentine Juan Martin del Potro, the No. 6 seed. The fan favorites are two of the most accomplished on the ATP World Tour, having claimed 47 singles titles between them. They have faced each other 11 times over the last ten years, with Ferrer holding a razor-thin 6-5 edge in the head-to-head record. However, del Potro has won their last three encounters, including a semi-final win in Auckland earlier this year. Wednesday s singles matches on Grand Stand Caliente feature players who have had recent Grand Slam breakthroughs. Australian Open semi-finalist Hyeon Chung, who became the first-ever Korean man to advance past the fourth round at a major, will play his second-round match against American qualifier Ernesto Escobedo. Chung s run in Melbourne included his first Top 10 win (over A. Zverev), and Escobedo notched his first Top 10 win in the first round here, over No. 4 seed Jack Sock. Later on the grandstand, No. 5 seed Kevin Anderson of South Africa, who reached his first Grand Slam final at the US Open last year, will meet Frenchman Adrian Mannarino. Anderson has won three of his four Tour-level matches against Mannarino. Three more matches on Cancha 2 will determine the remaining quarter-finalists. First, American Jared Donaldson will take on Australian Matthew Ebden. Ebden won a final-set tiebreak to upset defending champion Sam Querrey in the first round yesterday. Following the Donaldson-Ebden match, another American, Ryan Harrison, will take on the newest member of the Top 20, Argentina s Diego Schwartzman. Schwartzman is now at a career-high ranking of No. 18 following his title at Rio de Janeiro last week. The Argentine enters the second round at Acapulco after two consecutive straight-set wins over Fernando Verdasco: in the Rio final and in the first round here. Finally, Australian wild card Thanasi Kokkinakis will face Spaniard Feliciano Lopez. Lopez was drawn to play Nadal in the opening round, but after his compatriot s withdrawal, he instead played and defeated lucky loser Taro Daniel.
