THAMES MARATHON INFORMATION PACK THE THAMES MARATHON is a 14km River Thames swimming event, from Henley to Marlow. It is not a race, but a distance challenge event, aimed at open water swimmers who would like to include a long distance challenge in their summer open water swimming season. th Sunday 5 August 2018 Run in the style of a sportive, swimmers can choose to swim as part of a group, or as an individual. The Thames Marathon course covers one of the most beautiful stretches of the River Thames. EVENT SUMMARY Date: Sunday 5th August 2018 Minimum age: 18 Start Location: Exit Location: Leander Club, Henley, RG9 2LP Higginson Park, Marlow, SL7 2AE Towfloats: Compulsory Sunday Parking venue: Fairmile, Henley, RG9 2JR Sunday 5:00am 4.30pm Wave categories Leander Club, Henley, RG9 2LP Saturday 4:00pm-6:00pm OR Sunday 5:30am-7:00am Parking will be available at Leander for Saturday registration only Blue & Green wave Mixed ability wave for all other swimmers Registration: Course: This runs downstream along the River Thames from Henley-on-Thames to Marlow. It is split into 4 stages, with feeding stations and exit routes to avoid the locks. Pink wave This will be a fast challenging group, with the emphasis on short stops at locks and food stops. Aiming for under 4 hours (1500m swim time 27 minutes or under) Wetsuit requirement: Compulsory. A small number of pre-approved non-wetsuit spaces have been allocated. These swimmers will be issued with a coloured wristband to identify them as non-wetsuit swimmers. Page 2

WAVE DETAIL Wave Times: 07:00am 07:20am 07:40am Pink Wave (safety briefing 06:40am) Blue Wave (safety briefing 07:00am) Green Wave (safety briefing 07:20am) Swimmers will set off in their waves, but will not be required to stay together. Pods are likely to form naturally, but there is no requirement to swim as part of a group. For safety reasons it is advisable to swim with at least one other person. Towfloats are compulsory. Page 3

GETTING THERE Car Park (Sunday only) By Train The event car park will be located at Fairmile, Henley-on-Thames, Oxon, RG9 2JR There will be clear signs on the Fairmile from both directions. The nearest train station is Henley-on-Thames, which has links to London (approximately 1 hour) and Reading (approximately 20 minutes) Leander Club is just a short walk from the Town centre, across the bridge. The return coach from Marlow will drop swimmers and spectators back to this car park. The car park will close at 4.30pm. Car Share There is a walk of just over 1km from the car park to the Leander Club, which is located over the bridge at RG9 2LP. We encourage swimmers to car share wherever possible. CAR PARK (Sun only) Walk to starting venue Event parking for the Thames Marathon is situated on the Fairmile, RG9 2JR After parking your car, walk towards Henley Bridge. The Leander Rowing Club is on the opposite side of the bridge, on the left hand side. The walk is just over 1km. After your swim, the coaches will return you to this car park. If you register on Saturday afternoon, you will be able to park in the Leander Club car park while you collect your race pack. Starting venue To the station Page 5

VENUE & EVENT FACILITIES Henley Venue (Leander Club) - Swim start The start venue is based at the Leander Club, where competitors will have access to toilet and changing facilities before the start of the swim. Tea, coffee and bacon sandwiches will be available to purchase. Marlow Venue - Swim Finish Competitors will exit the river at Higginson Park. Toilets, and changing facilities will be available for you to use here. Food and drink will be on sale. Our Sports Massage Elise Quarrington will be on hand to provide 10 minute massages for 10. You can book this in advance by contacting www.elisequarrington.com Event Merchandise Thames Marathon hoodies & t-shirts, and other event memorabilia will be available to purchase at the finish venue at Higginson Park in the Selkie pop-up shop. Return to Henley Coaches will be available to take you back from the Court Garden car park at Higginson Park to the Fairmile car park. For swimmers, the coach trip is included in the registration fee. Supporters can travel for 5 per person, payable in cash on the day. Coaches will leave approximately every half an hour between 11.30pm and 3.30pm The car park will close at 4.30pm Page 6

SWIM GUIDELINES Before the Swim Please ensure you arrive at least 90 minutes before your wave start time, so that you have sufficient time to register and prepare for your swim. Registration Saturday (Leander Club) - 4:00pm to 6:00pm or Sunday (Leander club) 5.30am to 7.00am All competitors are required to register with photographic ID, before being allocated a swimming hat, timing chip, and having their number written on their hand. You will be able to leave your belongings or valuables such as car keys in a small (approx 3-4kg) bag after registering. These will be taken to the Marlow swim exit for you to collect after your swim. Safety briefing It is compulsory to attend the briefing, which is held approximately 20. minutes before your wave start. You will need to be ready to start the swim immediately after the briefing. Swim Start Once briefed, you will enter the river at the designated entry points. You will then have a short warm up swim, before being asked to swim to the start line by Henley Bridge. From there you will be guided by support canoes as you make your way en masse down the first reach to Hambleden Lock. After the Swim Once you have completed your swim, you will be able to collect your belongings at the finish venue in Higginson Park, along with your finishing time and finisher s medal. There will also be a variety of food stands, as well as sports massage at the finish venue. Page 7

SWIM GUIDELINES (CONT ) Food Stops There are 3 food stops along the way, at Hambleden Lock, Hurley Lock and Temple Lock. The following food will be available: Water/Sports drink Bananas Malt Loaf Cereal Bars Chocolate Salty Snacks There will also be some food at the finish and a hot drink. Supporters Supporters can walk or cycle the entire route, mostly alongside the swimmers. Please see here for a walker s route. Please note there are some kissing style gates along the route, that may be difficult for some bikes and particularly tag-alongs to get through. SAFETY ADVICE & INFORMATION Safety Advice Whilst water quality tests provide an indication of the suitability of a venue for open water swimming they do not mean that there is a complete absence of potential pathogens. You are advised to adopt the following procedures to minimise the risk of infections: Cover all cuts and abrasions, however minor, with sticking plasters. You should not consider swimming if you have deep cuts. Clean hands using either freshwater or sanitising gel, before eating during & after you have swum. Take a full shower at the earliest opportunity. Try not to ingest water while swimming. In addition all swimming kit (wetsuit, costume, goggles, hat,etc) should be washed in clean water and thoroughly dried prior to your next swimming session or event. Event Safety We take your safety very seriously and work closely with our medical and water safety providers to ensure that the necessary cover is in place both on and off shore, in accordance with ASA Open Water Swimming Guidelines. In addition, Henley Swim is the first events organiser to receive the SH2OUT accreditation, a set of safety standards developed by RLSS UK and British Triathlon. Page 9
