2003 Season Outlook The Sacred Heart University field hockey team has qualified for the Northeast Conference Tournament the past three seasons, the last two under head coach Chris Blais. This year s group of the Pioneers look to be as fit and athletic as ever as they approach the 2003 season with a fourth-straight trip to the tournament and a conference title on their radar. We had 16 athletes return, who strength trained and conditioned from winter break right through the spring, stated head coach Christine Blais. It the difference of us getting stronger, faster, and more athletic. It takes us into preseason fit and prepared, stronger and faster, and allows us to use the time to work on tactics and strategy. The Pioneers welcome back 16 letterwinners and eight starters off a team that finished third in the NEC last year with a 6-5 league mark and at 6-14 overall. If Sacred Heart is to cash in on their title hopes, the Pioneers will need senior Julie Messenger (Hindsdale, NH) to continue the scoring pace she has established in her first three seasons. Messenger, an All-Northeast Conference selection for the past three seasons, led SHU in scoring last season. The senior forward scored 11 goals while assisting on three others for 25 points. She finished second in the conference in goals per game (0.55 gpg) and fourth in points (25) and points per game (1.25 ppg). In her three years at Sacred Heart, Messenger has amassed 30 goals, 10 assists and 70 points. Senior Julie Messenger Julie came into last season more fit then she had ever been and pushed herself all season, coming up with solid results, stated Blais. This year, I expect her to be even more fit and prepared for the season. She has really improved her skills and is even more athletic. Combining the two, she could be unstoppable in the NEC this year. Also returning to join Messenger up front is junior Allison Enderly (Ocean, NJ). Enderly finished up 2002 third on the team in scoring, coming up with two goals and four assists on the year. Fellow juniors Marie Aiello (Stamford, CT) and Kristen Van Buskirk (New Milford, CT) will also be back after scoring three goals between them last year. Newcomer Becky Ford (Salem, NH) is expected to come in and contribute up front this season. Junior Christy Bobe The midfield will be led by the return of junior Christy Bobe (Northfield, MA) and senior Meghan Tucker (Carle Place, NY). Bobe scored a goal and picked up three assists last season and will be counted on heavily to contribute to the offense this season. Christy has really stepped up her play and her leadership. We expect to see great things from her this season, commented the head coach. Tucker was one of three Pioneers to start and play in all 20 games last season and

had two assists, adding to her career total of 10. In order for the Pioneers to take the next step in the NEC, coach Blais is looking for the development of a long passing game out of the midfield this season. The addition of highly touted recruit, Colleen Carney (Yorktown, NY), will go a long way to accomplishing that feat. To be NEC Champs, to take the next step, we have to develop both a short and a long passing game, stated Blais. We ve worked on that all spring, finding the long passing lanes. Colleen will help get us that long game. She sees the passing lanes very well. Senior Andrea Marsden Defensively, the Pioneers welcome back starters, senior Andrea Marsden (Bennington, VT) and junior Jeanni Ann Walls (Drexel Hill, PA). Marsden started all 20 games last season and was fourth on the team in scoring with two goals and an assist for five points. Junior Laura English (New Milford, CT) is also back to bring experience to the defense while the Pioneers welcome freshman Sarah Yeaton (Hampton, NH) to the mix for 2003. Anchoring the back will be junior goalkeeper Robyn Breer (Montpelier, VT). Breer started all 20 contests last season, posting a 3.10 goals against average with 184 saves and a shutout, 2-0 over UMBC. Her continued improvement will be key to the Pioneer s success this season. Robyn has worked hard with assistant coach Erika Vargas all year on her skills and new techniques, said Blais. They have become second nature to her and are now her strengths in goal. The 2003 schedule will feature just one meeting with Northeast Conference opponents, different from the home and away series utilized in the past. The new format makes every NEC tilt essential in the league standings. With just one game against opponents in the NEC this year, the focus on that portion of the schedule becomes all the more important, commented Blais. We can t take any team for granted, every game counts. Any team in the conference can grab one of those topfour spots. The non-conference portion of the schedule will feature several new match-ups as well as visits to several northeast powers in field hockey. Junior Allison Enderly The Pioneers open the season against Rhode Island and LaSalle and travel to Drexel and St. Joseph s, all new to the schedule in 2003. Road games at Yale, Maine, Hofstra and Holy Cross will all provide SHU with a tough out-of-league schedule. We ve added Rhode Island, LaSalle, Drexel and St. Joseph s this year, stated the head coach. Yale, Hofstra, Maine and Holy Cross are always tough and ranked each year. We look at a lot of the teams on our schedule and feel like we have closed the gap, stated Blais. In the past we have played well but haven t been able to get a win. Hopefully, we re ready to take that next step.

Head Coach Christine Blais Head Coach Christine Blais enters her third season as head coach of the Pioneer field hockey program in 2003. After two-straight seasons of qualifying for the Northeast Conference Tournament, Blais will look to lead the Pioneers to next step, a conference title. Blais brings a wealth of international playing and coaching experience to the Pioneers. She most recently played and coached at the Klein Zwitserland Hockey Club in The Hague, Netherlands. On the collegiate level, Blais was an assistant coach at Boston University, where she assisted in all facets of the program, including recruiting, scouting and on-field coaching. Blais, a 1995 graduate of Penn State, was an All-American in 1994. She was also a three-time All-Big Ten Academic-Athletic honor winner and the recipient of the 1994 Academic-Athletic Achievement Award. Her 1993 Nittany Lions squad won the Big Ten Championship. In 1994, she was a member of the United States Olympic National Training Squad and took part in the U.S. Olympic Festival that year. She was also a member of the 1999-00 U.S. National Training Team. In addition to building the Pioneer field hockey program, Blais serves as the head coach of the Pennsylvania Pride of the United Airlines Summer League as well as the head coach at a site for the US Futures Program.
