Tingira Kitchen Calling! The Tingira kitchen is a wonderful and rewarding place to become involved in our club. The kitchen provides a meal every Friday for its members and is an important social evening where we can come together over a lovely meal and enjoy each other s company. We are encouraging members to come along and bolster the number of volunteers that help out. Some of our more experienced cooks are more than happy to mentor and show you the ropes of cooking for a crowd. Below are some frequently asked questions regarding helping out in the kitchen. How many do I cook for? 60 is our rough guide. Usually by Thursday afternoon the numbers are fairly firm but 60 meals for member s dinner is a reliable number. How to you prepare a meal for that amount of people? The secret to preparing meals in large quantities is planning and cooking ahead of time. Prep does take time, that s why it is important to have more than one person in the kitchen. The kitchen is well equipped with most utensils and gadgets needed to help save time and effort.! 1 Tingira boat club newsletter 91 coast road macleay island qld 4184
Kitchen volunteers needed (continued) What should I cook? Easy home cooked meals are an absolute winner with our club members. Tried and true recipes that can be easily adapted for larger quantities and prepared ahead of time will take the worry out of preparing meals. Who does the ordering? Our providore uses catering wholesalers and a fabulous butcher who delivers to the island as the main source of ingredients for the kitchen. By letting the providore know ahead of time what is required, groceries can be ordered and delivered for meal prep. There is no need for members to travel across the Brisbane to buy and transport groceries back to the club, any other requirements that are not ordered through the wholesalers can be purchased at the Spar (who incidentally give the club a 10% discount!) How do I work out the quantities needed? One of our experienced cooks would be more than willing to help out with quantities and time allowances as well as the cooking of the meal. Tricks of the trade? Our butcher can do a lot of the hard work for you if required. Meat can be diced, or crumbed or marinated. Our supplier is very accomodating and helpful. The catering wholesaler can also provide ingredients that are already prepared like diced bacon, frozen vegetables etc. There is a catalogue with hundreds of items available for the club to purchase. How can I volunteer in the kitchen? That s easy! Simply contact our Providore Kay Chapman on 0409 057 988 or Moya Fox on 0437 129 348 and let them know. Or have a chat with them on a Friday evening about helping out. Many cooks really do make light work, please consider joining our team in the kitchen!! 2 Tingira boat club newsletter 91 coast road macleay island qld 4184
