CCC Welcomes New August Members Joseph Merlette ~ Associate William Gillam ~ Non-Resident David J. Merritt ~ Non-Resident Richard Odom ~ Non-Resident James Stanley ~ Social Dear Members, I will try hard not to rant and just report the facts. As you probably know by now vandals victimized us during the early morning hours of August 30th. The cart barn and maintenance sheds were damaged, carts were dumped in ponds and the Ridgewood course was damaged. The Richland County Sheriffs Department has been very responsive. While we did experience a delay that morning as the police processed the scene, I want to thank all of our staff for the great job they did getting us back on our golf course. Jim and his limited staff have enough challenges without having to wade chest deep in ponds to recover carts or rebuild greens he had in great shape. The authorities are taking this seriously and we will get things put back together. Thank you for your continued support oft our staff as they take on this extra, senseless work. Several people have asked me about the work they have seen going on in August. I think all of us have (with good reason) developed a healthy fear of HVAC failure. But no, we have had no additional HVAC failures. Second Wind traced the leak we were having back to their installation and not our old plumbing. They stepped up and changed the orientation of one of the units and that has corrected the problem. Last week we had a crew in replacing upstairs windows. This was the result of storm damage and was included in our insurance claim. The new awnings are finally in and providing long awaited shade on the back patio. We have contracted with Custodial Choice for cleaning services for our clubhouse. This will start in September and will provide for a weekly cleaning. Initially this will start with deep cleaning for our rest rooms and locker rooms and move throughout the clubhouse from there. Our staff will still be responsible for day-to-day cleaning. While this is an additional on-going expense for Columbia Country Club it is our expectation that this will provide noticeable improvement in our clubhouse environment. July was a slow month at Columbia Country Club but much better than last July. Activity has picked up considerably in August. Jim and his team will quickly have Ridgewood back in shape and we expect busy months in September and October. CCC President

Scott Amey - Living the Dream As many of you now know, we lost a beloved member of the CCC family on August 20th, 2014. Words cannot express how greatly Scott Amey will be missed. Scott s family was very happy to see the outpour of CCC support at the funeral service. CCC will be purchasing a commemorative brick in Scott s memory. We are currently taking donations in the Bar, Pro Shop, and Office. Should funding exceed the cost of the brick we will be donating the funds to the two foundations/charities that Scott requested. Rest in Peace Scott Amey. Each fall, CCC is invaded by Army Worms. Late each summer moths lay egg masses in trees and often can be seen on ball washers, flags and flag poles. Upon hatching, the larva falls into the turf and begin eating. Areas they damage resemble turf that has been affected by drought conditions, brown turf with minimal amounts of leaf tissue. Control is easily obtained by spraying insecticide around the infested areas. This summer, we have sprayed over 65 acres of turf that has been affected by Army Worms! Columbia Country Club Mission Statement Columbia Country Club will be recognized by our members, employees and the community as the highest quality full service country club in the midlands while providing a safe, friendly and family atmosphere for all membership levels to enjoy.
Over the last few weeks, temperatures have begun to drop reminding us that fall is right around the corner. In August we had over 4 of rain, but the course handled the moisture well and conditions have been great at CCC. In September, we will be applying a pre-emergent herbicide for winter weed control. This application will be sprayed by our staff, on all tees, fairways, collars, approaches and bunker complexes. In the past we have achieved excellent Poa Annua control when this herbicide was applied. In addition the staff and I will begin cleaning up the natural areas that have been neglected during the hectic summer months. Thanks for everyone s support and we look forward to everyone enjoying the great fall weather here at CCC! CCC Superintendent As the summer draws to a close we turn our attention to a busy September and October. We have the honor of hosting several outside events over the course of the next two months and ask for your patience as we accommodate the additional play. Not only will hosting these events allow us to showcase our club but the added revenue generated allows us to keep membership costs down. We will do our best to minimize any inconveniences to our members but ask that you please check the calendar for events and plan accordingly. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation. For those unaware, Scott Amey longtime Assistant Golf Professional at CCC, passed away August 20, 2014. I had the privilege of working with Scott for 10 years. Over that time I came to appreciate his genuine nature, sense of humor and most importantly his ability to stay calm. I will never forget the day a member snuck up behind Scott and blew an air horn in his ear. Everybody in the golf shop jumped out of their skin, except for Scott. He simply looked at the member and said cut that crap out. He was truly one of a kind and will be missed. Whenever someone asked Scott how he was doing his answer was always living the dream and he was right we are all living the dream. PGA Golf Professional / General Manager THANK YOU!!! A giant THANK YOU goes out to all of the members of CCC who made the Employee Appreciate Party possible! The evening was filled with fun and laughter! The CCC staff cannot thank you enough for everything that was done to make us feel so special!
One of my favorite sitcoms these days is Modern Family. This show also just won an Emmy award for its popularity. I watch it and just see how everybody plays a role in life. Sometimes we may disagree, sometimes we may be more selfish, sometimes we may make mistakes, but in the end we are still friends and family and we come back together and move on. Wonderful lessons can be learned and we remember what is important. Modern Family always ends with one of the family members coming on the show and talking of the lesson learned. Let us all remember this when we deal with each other at the Club. O.K., moving right along a huge congratulations to the new Greatest Golfers in the World! The LGA is so proud of our new Club Champion: Alex Van Dine (who by the way, shot an unbelievable 69 in one of her rounds). How does one do that, I ponder? The runner up was the outstanding Catherine Shealy who definitely wields some powerful and graceful golf talents. The one and only Debbie Wiser tore up the course also and took overall Net! We sure do have some talent around CCC! Congrats to all the men Greatest Golfers in the World also!
