FISHING KNOTS

Keep these things in mind when tying your knots: https://www.redington.com/new-to-fly-fishing/knot-tying 1. Wet your knot. Before you tighten a knot, lubricate it with saliva or by dipping it in the water. This will help the knot slide and sit properly. 2. Pull knots tight. Tighten knots with a steady, continuous pull. Make sure the knot is tight and secure. 3. Use nippers. You want to trim the excess material after your knot as close as possible without damaging the knot.

Arbor Knot How to tie the Arbor Knot. Use the simple Arbor Knot to tie your fishing line to the spool of any type of fishing reel fly reel, spinning reel or bait casting reel. The goal here really isn t in thinking that a knot is going to hold if a fish has taken all the line down to the end your reel spool, but to have something strong enough to hold in the event you lose a rod and reel overboard and have to pull it up by the line. Another knot that can be used to tie a line to a reel is the Uni Knot, but with just one or two wraps instead of the five or six used to tie on a hook. Arbor Knot Tying Instructions Wrap your line around the arbor of the spool with the tag end of the line. Then tie a simple overhand knot around the standing part with the tag end. Tie a second overhand knot in the tag end just an inch or two from the first overhand knot. Pull the standing part of the line to slide the first overhand knot down to the spool and the second knot to jam against the first. Trim tag end close.

Blood Knot How to tie the Blood Knot. Used for joining two lines together, the Blood Knot is a tried and true fishing knot and a favorite of fly fishermen. The strength of the knot is increased by making at least 5 and up to 7 wraps on each side of the knot. It works best with lines of approximately equal diameter. Blood Knot Tying Instructions Overlap ends of lines to be joined. Twist one around the other making 5 turns. Bring tag end back between the two lines. Repeat with the other end, wrapping in opposite direction the same number of turns. Slowly pull lines in opposite directions. Turns will wrap and gather. Clip ends close to the knot.

Double Uni Knot How to tie the Double Uni Knot. This knot is used by anglers in both salt and fresh water for joining lines of similar or different strengths. It works well and some find it easier to tie than the Blood Knot. When tying in braided line to monofilament, make 8 turns with the slippery braided line and 5+ turns with the mono.. Double Uni Knot Tying Instructions Overlap the ends of lines to be joined. Take the end of the line from the left and double back and make 3 to 4 wraps around both lines and through the loop that was formed. Pull tag end to tighten. Repeat with the end of the line on the left making the same number of wraps unless tying with braided line in which you should double the number of wraps. You have now tied two Uni knots. Pull the standing lines in opposite direction to slide the two knots together. Clip ends close to the knot.

Improved Clinch Knot How to tie the Improved Clinch Knot. The Improved Clinch is a time-tested and a very popular choice for tying terminal tackle to monofilament line. It is quick and easy to tie and reliable. It can be difficult to tie in lines testing greater than 25 pounds breaking strength. It is not recommended for braided line. Improved Clinch Knot Tying Instructions Thread end of line through eye of hook. Double back making 5 or more turns around standing line. Bring end of line back through the first loop formed behind the eye then through the big loop. Wet knot and pull on tag end to tighten down the coils. Slide tight against the eye and clip tag end close.

Nail Knot How to tie the Nail Knot. The Nail Knot is a time tested and popular knot to join fly line to leader. The use of a small hollow tube (coffee stirrer sticks can work) instead of a nail is effective. Nail Knot Tying Instructions Lay a nail or hollow tube against the end of a fly line. Set the butt section end of a leader against the line and tube. Leave an extra 10 12 of its tag end to tie the Knot. Make 6-8 close together wraps, working left to right, back around the leader, line and tube or nail. Pass the tag end through the tube or the space made by the nail and remove the tube. Pull tag end to snug up the coils then tag end and leader to seat the knot firmly onto the fly line. Trim tag end close to the knot.

Palomar Knot How to tie the Palomar Knot. The Palomar Knot comes close to being a 100% knot when tied properly. Be sure that when the hook or lure is passed through the loop that all parts of the knot cinch up together. Many depictions of this knot elsewhere make it look like the loop part of the knot goes up against the bottom of the eye of the hook or lure. The knot can fail if tied in that manner. This is also the best knot to use with braided fishing line. Palomar Knot Tying Instructions Double 6 inches of line and pass end of loop through eye of hook. Tie a loose overhand knot with hook hanging from bottom. Holding overhand knot between thumb and forefinger, pass loop of line over the hook. Slide loop above eye of hook. Pull on both the standing line and tag end to tighten knot down onto eye. Clip tag end close.

Perfection Loop How to tie the Perfection Loop Knot. Strong and effective the Perfection Loop is a favorite for tying a loop at the end of the line. Besides being strong and reliable, it can be crafted to make a very small loop if desired. Perfection Loop Knot Tying Instructions Form a loop (A) at the end of the line by passing the tag end behind the standing line. Take a turn around the standing line, forming a second loop (B). Hold in place and take another turn around the line, this time crossing on the topside of new loop B. Hold tag end in place and pass loop B through loop A. Pull loop B up until knot jams tight. Trim tag end.

Surgeons End Loop How to tie the Surgeon's End Loop Knot. The popularity of the Surgeon s End Loop lies in its simplicity as well as its strength. Two overhand knots with doubled line and you re done! This creates a strong, trustworthy loop at the end of your line. This can be used to attach store bought pre-made Snell leaders (such as Eagle Claw) to your line by interlocking the two loops. To do this just insert the leader's hook through the Surgeon's End Loop and then pass the leader's hook through its own loop and pull tight. To tie the Triple Surgeon's End Loop just add another pass through the first overhand knot. This makes for a little more secure knot. Surgeon s End Loop Knot Tying Instructions Double the end of the line and tie a loose overhand knot. Pass end of loop through the knot again. (Optional) For Triple Surgeon's End Loop, pass the end of the loop through the knot again. Hold the standing line and tag end and pull the loop to tighten the knot. Clip tag end close.

Turle Knot How to tie the Turle Knot. The Turle Knot is a popular knot for connecting a fly with a turned up or turned down eye to a line. There are several variations to this knot and this one would be considered the "Improved Turle Knot". Left Kreh suggests tucking the tag end through the large loop before tightening the knot onto the hook eye, but that is optional. Turle Knot - Improved Turle Knot Tying Instructions Thread fly onto tippet and leave several inches of tag end to form the knot. Double the line back onto itself toward the fly and then bring the tag end behind then over the doubled line, making a loop. Pass tag end twice through the loop created, essentially tying a double overhand knot. Tighten down the knot just created and slip the loop over the fly. Pull on the leader to set the knot tight against the hook eye. Trim the tag end.
