The Iquique Days structure is similar t previus years where we prgress frm mre basic skills in the first segments t mre advanced flying during the last segment. The Instructinal Days verlap with Iquique Days #1. Pilts that sign up fr the Instructinal Days will receive mre dedicated instructin, fcusing n perfecting grund handling, ridge saring, and basic thermal flying skills. Iquique Days #1 is designed s that a self-sufficient (nt needing instructin) friend r partner can als jin the trip at the same time. Instructinal Days- (11 days, 10 nights) This package trip is fcusing n P1- P4 pilts wh wuld like t imprve grund handling, launching, landing, ridge saring, and thermal flying skills. The first 3 days f this tur will fcus n intensive basic training. We will have many instructrs available t help yu adapt t Iquique s unique high wind launching cnditins. All pilts attending these days are required t have gd launching, flying, and landings skills. If yu d nt have gd high wind launching skills, then we expect yu t sign up fr the Instructinal Days. days. Iquique Days #3 - (11 days, 10 nights) Cntinuing with ur Iquique Days, this part f the tur is still designed fr P-2 (nvice) t P-4 (advanced) pilts. During this prtin f the tur, we will try t fly sme ther sites and als seek fr a few 50-100 km XC flights! All XC flights will be lead by Tdd and Luis and Ken, and radi cntact will be mandatry. Pilts attending this prtin f ur tur need t have experience in strng thermal cnditins and turbulence, since we will be flying during the strnger, mid day cnditins. Any P-2 s that are still hanging in will prbably have t land earlier during the XC flights, and befre any f the difficult crssings. The experience f flying 20 r 30 miles will still be exhilarating fr mst pilts at this level. Iquique is prbably the mst cnsistent flying site in the wrld, and we will be flying everyday! Gd, high wind launching skills are very imprtant fr this week! Cmmentaries and Flying Sites Iquique is lcated in the nrthern part f Chile alng the Pacific Ocean, 120 miles suth f the Peruvian brder. The city has a ppulatin f 250,000 and is thriving due t the duty free zne and mining in this nrthern zne. This area is als knwn as the Atacama Desert, which is why the flying cnditins are s cnsistent. It NEVER RAINS! The lwer surface winds are always blwing in frm the Pacific Ocean, generating incredible lift fr mre than 500 miles alng the nrthern Chile castline! The ridge varies between 1,500 and 4,000 feet in altitude, and XC flights can be flwn in bth directins quite easily. In Nvember, the breeze nrmally starts blwing at 10 AM, and lift lasts until 7 PM. There are several takeffs near Iquique, and all f them allw pilts t reach beach landings while flying abve the city and the dunes. There are many ther launches t the suth and t the nrth. Alt Hspici is ur typical mrning site. It ffers a very easy flight t Huayquique beach fr an early day sled ride, r after sme ridge saring and light thermal flying. It als allws mre advanced pilts t fly rughly 12 miles suth and 6 miles nrth, fr a fun ut and return flight! These mini XC flights require gd thermal flying skills and a pretty gd bump tlerance! Landing at Brava beach, just in frnt f ur htel, is the cmmn task fr mst pilts with gd thermaling skills. Pal Buque, a site just utside f Iquique, became famus when the SAT Team sht their first DVD prductin here. The launch is at the bttm f a 3,000 ft sand ridge! Yes, depending n the wind, yu nly need t kite yur glider up 30 feet r s, and then yu can sar all the way up t the tp f the ridge! It is an amazing place t practice tp landing and hillside landings, fly mini XC flights, practice basic decent techniques, imprve kiting skills in all areas, ski in the sand, r just enjy the beautiful views f the Pacific Ocean and the unique clrs f the desert! Mid afternn cnditins are usually strng, then the thermals and wind strength back ff as the evening prgresses. Black Muntain t Iquique is a classic, shrt XC flight that we usually cmplete during the early
days f ur tur. Less experienced pilts will land at Ls Verdes r Pal Buque, while the mre experienced pilts cntinue t fly back t the Htel. Ls Verdes als prvides us with sme great lcal seafd restaurants fr thse wh dn t want t fly fr hurs and hurs! Alt Chipana and alt San Marcs are ur favrite XC sites that we will be using fr ur mre advanced XC flights. Thirty-five mile flights are quite easy t achieve frm bth f these sites. A 70 mile flight is als pssible when we get special permissin t fly past the airprt n the weekends, and are able t make it all the way back t the htel! These sites are als great fr just flying lcally, and landing n the huge pen beaches belw the launch, after hurs f thermaling! The thermal/dynamic flying cnditins in Iquique are s cnsistent at this time f the year that mst f these flights are pssible almst everyday!
