POLICIES, RULES AND REGULATIONS The following rules and regulations for the Mr. Historically Black Colleges and Universities Kings Leadership Conference and Competition is presented for your convenience and are not intended to be inclusive. Please read this list carefully. Everyone, including candidates, relatives and friends must adhere to the rules and regulations. Failure to abide could result in disqualification from the competition. 1. SCHEDULE Strict adherence to the time schedule is imperative. The success of the competition is dependent upon everyone being where he should be at the correct times. DO EVERYTHING IN YOUR POWER TO BE ON TIME TO ALL EVENTS. 2. Candidates are not allowed to leave the hotel without the expressed permission or accompaniment of the coordinators. Each candidate s whereabouts are accounted for from the time he registers until the conclusion of the farewell breakfast. 3. Advisors, friends and relatives are not allowed to attend rehearsals. Advisors are required to be back stage during the competition. 4. Candidates are not allowed to visit with parents or friends at any time without consent of coordinators. 5. Candidates are required to be in their rooms by the posted room check. This is for your safety and well being. 6. Please bring all needed competition garments, props and music. 7.Candidates must change swiftly between segments because of the short time allowed. Be organized. 8. Contact your advisor if a parent or friend must deliver or receive an article important to your success in the pageant. 9. Rehearsals are MANDATORY. Missing a rehearsal may result in disqualification. GENERAL REQUIREMENTS: Eligible candidates must meet all of the requirements as listed below: The candidate must be currently enrolled and in good standing at the college or university he is representing The candidate must be between 18 and 28 years of age The candidate is required to participate in all conference and competition activities 1
OFFICIAL ENTRY All kings are required to complete the entire application, the personal self-portrait form, the talent profile and to write a three (3) minute speech on the following topic: Historically Black Colleges and Universities: The cornerstones of African American history and culture-- Black males the catalyst for the survival of these great institutions. The speech must be content specific and original. Each king will present his speech during the preliminary competition. A 3x5 or 5x7 headshot in a business suit and tie, without a crown, is required. The entry fee of $565 and the chaperone fee of $325 are non-refundable. All items must arrive by December 1, 2011. Mail completed entry to: Lincoln University Dawn R. Collins 820 Chestnut, Young Hall Room 301 Jefferson City, Missouri 65101 TRAVEL All participants are required to provide their own transportation to and from Jefferson City, Missouri. Plan to arrive at the Capitol Plaza Hotel, 415 W. McCarty St., Jefferson City, Missouri, no later than 3 p. m. on Wednesday, Feb 15, 2012. Airports and distance from Lincoln University are as follows: Columbia Regional Airport (about 35 minutes), St. Louis Lambert Airport (about 1 hour and 45 minutes) and Kansas City International Airport (about 2 hours and 30 minutes). We suggest renting a car at the airport or contacting George Tyus, owner of Tyus Enterprise at (573) 230-6455 for shuttle service from any airport in Missouri. Amtrak train provides service to Jefferson City. A shuttle will be provided from the Capitol Plaza Hotel to the university. LODGING Lodging is included in the registration fee for KINGS ONLY. Kings and chaperones are required to stay at the Capitol Plaza Hotel. Chaperones and queens are required to make their own reservations, and are responsible for full payment. Reservations may be obtained by calling the Capitol Plaza Hotel at (573) 635-1234 and asking for the Kings Competition Block. The cost for a single or double room is $63.86 with a tax exempt letter from your university and includes breakfast. MEALS Meals are included in the registration fee and will be provided by the university s food service. Meals from any other location, with the exception of special luncheons and banquets, will be at the purchaser s expense. 2
ATTIRE Business casual is required unless otherwise specified. Suits and ties will be required for most events. In addition, the following outfits will be needed for the competition: PLEASE BRING YOUR SASH Poise and Projection segment Black tuxedo is required. The style should be indicative of your personal style. Accentuate the tuxedo with the color of your choice (vest and tie). Oratory Business suit and tie Production number- Attire requirements will be emailed after full registration fee is received. Rehearsal-Sufficient casual and comfortable clothing for rehearsal Talent segment All necessary items needed to perform (i.e., costume, taped music, props, etc.) PRIZES/ SCHOLARSHIP Scholarships will be awarded as follows: 2011 Mr. HBCU $1,500.00, sash and trophy First runner-up $1,000.00, sash and trophy Second runner-up $500.00, sash and trophy Mr. Talent Sash and Trophy Mr. Oratory Sash and Trophy Mr. Congeniality Sash and Trophy JUDGING PROCESS Each king will be judged in the following categories: Elocution Ease of manner, projection Talent Professional demeanor We look forward to working with you and seeing you on February 15, 2012! HBCU KINGS COMPETITION JUDGING CRITERIA Oratory (45 points) 3 minute limit Each contestant is required to deliver a three minute speech in business attire. The contestants will be judged on articulation, elocution, content, presentation and projection during delivery. Points will be deducted for exceeding the three minute limit. Allocation of points: Elocution 10 points Articulation 5 points Content 10 points Presentation 10 points Projection 10 points Talent (20 points) 3 minute limit Each contestant will be required to display the talent of his choice. The delivery should not exceed three minutes. If props are required, one minute will be allowed for set up. The contestant will be judged on confidence, originality, delivery and costuming. Points will be deducted for exceeding the three minute limit. Allocation of points: Confidence 5 points Delivery 5 points Originality 5 points Costuming 5 points Ease of Manner/ Projection (20 points) The candidate will demonstrate ease of manner in this segment. Each candidate should wear a tuxedo that demonstrates his own personal style. The candidate will be judged on appearance, style and ease of manner. Allocation of points: Appearance/ Style 10 points Ease of Manner 10 points Presentation/ Image (20 points)-finalists ONLY This is the question and answer segment. Each finalist will be asked an on-the-spot question and will be judged on articulation, deportment, and how well he answers with confidence and ease.
