MSU Swimming & Diving presents John Munley Long Course Memorial Swim Meet Saturday, June 17, 2017 Recognized by the Michigan LMSC # Location: Michigan State University - IM West Outdoor 50 Meter Pool. Park free in Lot 62W. Set GPS to 393 Chestnut Rd, Michigan State University, East Lansing. See attached map. Facility: The Intramural Sports West Building adjacent to the pool closes at 6:00 pm. Therefore, plan on using the small changing/shower rooms on the pool deck. If the building doors are locked when you arrive, enter the outdoor pool through the fence gate near Munn Arena. The length of the competition course without a bulkhead is in compliance and on file with USMS in accordance with articles 105.1.7 and 107.2.1. Entries: Entry fee. The entry fee for advance entries is $30 per person; deck entries cost $35. All proceeds go to the John Munley Memorial Swimming Scholarship at MSU. Additional donations to the scholarship fund are welcome. Entry fees and donations are tax deductible! Checks are payable to the John Munley Memorial Swimming Scholarship. Entries submitted by US Mail. Advance entries are preferred but not required. Send the completed entry form, photocopy of USMS membership card (if you are a member), and entry fee to Gail Dummer, 3100 Scarborough Road, Lansing, MI 48910, postmarked by Saturday, June 10, 2017. Deck entries. Deck entries will be accepted until 4:15 pm on meet day. Bring the completed entry form or complete a form at the meet, show your USMS membership card (if you are a member), and pay your entry fee. Rules: US Masters Swimming rules (http://www.usms.org/rules/) apply. The meet host will have two timers available for each lane. Swimmers attempting national or Michigan records should notify the starter immediately prior to the race to request a third timer. Munley Scholarship The John Munley Memorial Swimming Scholarship About. The John Munley Memorial Scholarship is awarded annually to the swimmer or diver who demonstrates an outstanding level of competitiveness, dedication to his sport, and loyalty to Michigan State University. He continuously strives to make the most of his abilities, vigorously pursues his goals and dreams through training, and competes in a way that sets high standards for himself and his teammates. He is a leader by example and demonstrates that hard work and dedication may lead to new levels of personal accomplishment. He represents the best of what athletics, sportsmanship, and Spartan Spirit are about at Michigan State University. Recipients. Scholarship recipients to date are 2002-Nick DeFauw, 2003 & 2004-Chad Wilson, 2005-Matt Wisniewski, 2006-Matt Torres, 2007-Michael VanBeek, 2008-Matt Massman, 2009 & 2010-Ricky Forrest. 2011-Mark Schramm, 2012-Nick McGowan, 2013-Bryan Williams, 2014-Ian Rodriguez, 2015-Jon Burke, and 2016-Mitch Strahlman. Funding goal. $350,000 is needed to endow the Munley Scholarship (up from $250.000 in the past). The fund now stands $174,000. The annual value of the scholarship is 5% of the current amount of the fund, now about $8,000. Proceeds from the Munley masters swimming meet add about $7,000 to $8,000 annually to the scholarship fund. Why Give? Pay it forward. If you received a scholarship or other financial assistance during your college years, you know the importance of such funding to a student's education. Help a student athlete! Support men's collegiate swimming. The demise of men's collegiate swimming programs around the country has been well documented. Do your part to strengthen the infrastructure of MSU's swimming and diving program by contributing to this scholarship. Show your love for MSU! About John Munley John Munley swam for Michigan State University from 1997-2001. Not heavily recruited out of high school, John went on to be MSU's Most Valuable Swimmer for all four years. John served as team co-captain, qualified for 2000 Olympic Trials, and was first alternate for the 1998 World University Games. He finished his senior season with the varsity record in the 200-yard freestyle. John passed away while jogging on campus during the spring of his senior year.

Safety Plan 2017 John Munley Memorial Swim Meet 1. Emergency procedures established by the Department of Recreational Sports and Fitness Services at Michigan State University will apply to this meet. 2. Lifeguards will be provided by the Department of Recreational Sports and Fitness Services at Michigan State University. 3. USMS rules and safety procedures will apply. The pool will be open only to competitors registered to swim in the meet. Diving will be allowed only at the deep/starting end of the pool. During warm-up diving will be allowed only in designated sprint lanes. Dives from the pool deck (but not the diving boards or tower) will be allowed in the diving well.
