Charter High School Swim & Dive Team 2015 2016 Handbook 1

Welcome to the Charter High School Swim and Dive Team! We look forward to working with you. Our team is a varsity sport sanctioned by the Georgia High School Association. Our support group, the Splashdown Club, is a non-profit organization run by parent volunteers. This handbook is for swimmers, divers, coaches, and parents. Philosophy and Goals The CCHS Swim and Dive Team was organized to offer High School students a high quality competitive swimming and diving program. We provide students with opportunities for personal growth and enjoyment, and an introduction to the lifelong health benefits of swimming and diving. These sports are taught in a fun environment while nurturing a competitive attitude at the individual s own rate. Our desire is to create a positive atmosphere where young people can learn to set individual goals and experience the rewards of achieving them. The CCHS Swim and Dive Team also provides an opportunity for our youth to experience the dynamics of working together as part of a successful team a setting in which team members can learn from each other as well as from their own experiences. Winning is not based solely on team points, an individual's speed, or the number of awards acquired. The CCHS Swim and Dive Team considers all swimmers and divers as equal and integral members of the team. Our success is ultimately measured by how much opportunity we provide for the students of our school and by how much their individual potential is maximized. The building of positive attitudes, healthy bodies, disciplined minds, and enduring friendships are among the rewards our program strives to offer to those who join the CCHS Swim and Dive Team. Splashdown Club Board The Executive Board of the Splashdown Club directs the financial affairs and supervises the club s non-coaching affairs. The Executive Board meets whenever necessary. Lane Timer One timer shall be placed directly over their assigned lane at the finish. The timer starts the watch at the instant of the flash, and stops the watch and the plunger (which is connected to the touch pad) immediately when any part of the swimmer s body touches the end of the pool. The Timer then gives the time to the Lane Recorder. Four timers are needed for each meet. Lane Recorder One recorder shall be placed directly over their assigned lane at the finish. The recorder records the swimmer s time from the Timer at the end of each event or heat. The recorder is also responsible for making sure the swimmers are lined up for the next three events or heats. Four recorders are needed for each meet. 3

Diving Scorekeeper One scorekeeper from each team records the judges diving scores and calculates total scores for each diver and keeps a running total overall for each diver. Lettering Requirements Athletes must swim in at least 3 meets and attend all meets and practices, unless attending practice at a club swim team or unless otherwise excused by a coach. Eligibility Requirements 1. All eligible students currently enrolled at CCHS may participate in swimming and diving. 2. All Forms (Athletic Participation Consent Form {includes parental consent, medical consent & medical insurance information} Swimmer & Diver Commitment Contract, Concussion and Transportation Authorization) must be on file with the coaches. 3. Athletes must remain in good academic standing throughout the swim/dive season. 4. Missing a meet without medical excuse, bereavement excuse, or prior permission will result in removal from the team. 5. Three unexcused practice absences will result in removal from the team. 6. Athletes may also be removed from the team for conduct violating the Student Code of Conduct. 7. Athletes who become academically ineligible will be suspended from the team until they become academically ineligible. 8. Athletes must also follow the terms of the Commitment Contract to remain on the team. Academic Requirements 1. Final grades from the second semester of the previous school year will determine academic eligibility. Eligibility will be re-determined at the conclusion of the current semester in January. Anyone who does not pass 6 out of 7 classes will be dropped from the team. 2. Team members must be on track for their current grade. 3. Any student who becomes ineligible because of his/her academic status will remain ineligible until he/she fulfills the academic requirements. Travel/Transportation Team members must provide their own transportation after practice and after HOME swim meets. All team members are REQUIRED to ride the bus with the coaches to AWAY meets. Team members may ride home with parents after the away swim meet or ride the bus back to CCHS with a coach. Any student with their own transportation and who drives now or will drive at any time during the swimming season are required to complete and return a driving waiver and any other required paperwork to the coaching staff for their approval. Swim Suits CCHS swimmers and divers must wear the CCHS team suit at all meets and competitions. The team suit is usually ordered in a smaller size than a recreational suit to reduce resistance. Conversely, practice suit(s) are usually loose fitting (also called drag suits ). Some swimmers use old suits for this purpose. No two-piece suits are allowed at any time. 4

Types of Meets CCHS swimmers and divers are allowed to enter only 10 competitions per season. Inter-Squad Meets (or Dual Meets) These are meets in which CCHS swimmers and divers will compete against other GHSA swim teams. These meets will be for the entire team. The meet lineup will specify what events each swimmer is racing. The lineup will vary to meet the coaches training objectives and to give an interesting variety of experiences to our swimmers. Sometimes coaches will select events for each swimmer or diver; sometimes the swimmer or diver will be given a choice. Dual meets last about two to two and a half hours.
