Background Information Walking for Health is a national scheme which encourages people to exercise for the benefit of their health. Walking is suitable for people of all ages. Brisk walking which results in slight breathlessness and stimulates the heart to beat a little faster is considered one of the best forms of exercise. Regular walking as part of a healthy lifestyle is beneficial for those who have suffered health problems as well as those wishing to prevent them. Havering Walking for Health started in 2003. It is run by volunteers and supported by the London Borough of Havering who coordinates and administers the scheme. There are over 20 trained walk leaders who are familiar with the 19 different walk venues. Walks occur on 6 days of every week throughout the year, and vary from 30 minutes to 2 hours and also vary from easy to hard. The walk leaders are there to assist and advise as required.

Walking Programme October 2013 - March 2014 1. All participants need to complete an annual Outdoor Health Questionnaire before attending a walk. You can find these online at havering.gov.uk, haveringactive.co.uk or walkingforhealth.org.uk. Alternatively you can call 01708 433768 to request a form. Completed forms should be returned to: Janice Kirk, The Stableblock, Langtons House, Billet Lane, Hornchurch, RM11 1XJ or given to any of the Walk Leaders. 2. GRADING OF WALKS For guidance, walks have been graded and are shown against the meeting points as follows: Beginner - 30 minutes taster walk 1 STAR (*) - Easy 2 STAR (**) - Medium 3 STAR (***) - Hard It is recommended that new participants, who must always register with the walk leader, should start with the beginner/easier walks and then determine their ability to progress to other walks. 3. Walk times vary from 1 hour to 2 hours depending on star ranking (except Monday s beginner 30 minute walk). Please consult with walk leaders for any particular day. 4. Please always wear robust footwear and appropriate clothing. Some paths are rough and get muddy in winter. 5. In exceptional weather e.g. snow, please contact a walk leader for that day who will know if the walk is cancelled. 6. Walks will start promptly at time shown so please allow enough time to change into walking boots etc to register prior to the start. ALL WALKERS UNDER THE AGE OF 16 MUST BE ACCOMPANIED BY A RESPONSIBLE ADULT OVER 18 YEARS OF AGE.
