Purpose and Philosophy Our purpose and philosophy is three-fold: 1. To teach all who join how to run and impart an appreciation for a potentially life-long healthy activity 2. To infuse an interest in the sport that will continue through the high school years 3. To translate hard work into personal success and HAVE FUN along the way.

Practice We run (and practice) in all conditions... hot & cold... wet & dry... but not in thunder and lightning. Students are required to wear pants to all practices and meets. This is very important to keeping their leg muscles warm and healthy, as well as prevent injury. During the cold part of the season, students must come dressed for the weather. Athletes must have proper running shoes in order to participate in practice. The coaches reserve the right to send an athlete home if they are not prepared. If it s warm enough for recess (above 20 with wind-chill) we will probably be running. We will cancel by announcement at school and text alerts
Practices continued PRACTICES There is a ten practice minimum required, by the state, for all participants before they are allowed to compete in any meet. All athletes are required to consistently attend practices. We understand that middle school students are very busy people and certainly arrangements can be made to accommodate schedules; however, athletes will sacrifice improvement and perhaps run the risk of injury without consistent training.
Meets MEETS It is expected that all athletes commit to running in ALL scheduled meets. Our team's success is a direct result of attendance at meets. With several events being relays, it is critical to you as a runner and to the team as a whole that you do whatever it takes to be there. Conflicts will arise though, and we will work to find the best solution HOWEVER, we also fully expect that a meet will take priority over any practice for another team! Athletes will always leave for and return from away meets at the Tower Heights Middle School Front Door. Student will not have transportation provide for Centerville Track meets or any practices.
Meet Rosters ***DO NOT CONTACT ANY COACH ASKING ABOUT ROSTERS OR RUNNING TIME. IF YOU OR YOUR STUDENT APPROACHES A COACH ASKING WHY THEY ARE NOT RUNNING THEY WILL NOT RUN IN THE NEXT MEET. Athletes are welcome to ask the coach how they can improve to help the team but not about running in a certain meet.
Absences/Meets If your student can't make a meet they must tell us two days in advance. If they fail to tell a coach and their name is on the roster but they can't attend, they WON'T run in the next meet. All athletes must ride the bus to and from meets. If an athlete needs to leave early we must have a signed form 24 hours in advance. The form must be signed by the athletic director and turned into Coach Hansen when they board the bus.
Drop off and PICK-UP We understand that not only are athletes busy people, but parents are busy as well. As such, we make every effort to consistently finish practice and have students ready for pick-up at 7:30PM. It is our most sincere hope and desire that parents make a concerted effort to be prompt as well. Please consider carpooling if this might be an issue. All busses from away meets will return to TOWER HEIGHTS MIDDILE SCHOOL front doors
Uniforms SINGLETS-- All athletes will need a singlet. Possibly purchase from Embroid Me. Estimated cost $30 but wait until March 9. BLACK RUNNING SHORTS AND WHITE T-SHIRT Make sure that any symbols or trademarks are blacked out. Ladies: black sports bra ONLY. Black tights or long sleeves only
WARMUPS-- All athletes are required to bring pants and a longsleeved shirt to every practice and meet. The weather is very volatile in the spring, and athletes need to have appropriate clothing. Jackets, hats, and gloves are also often necessary. Work out tights can be considered pants. It is encouraged that athletes wear shorts over them.
SPIRITWEAR-- Spiritwear will be available at the beginning of the season. Athletes may win spiritwear items during the fundraiser, or purchase them outright. Order forms and fundraiser sheets will be distributed at practice. The fundraiser, runathon, will be Tuesday, March 17 from 6-7:30pm during practice.
WATCH - * For distance runners only. A watch will help students pace themselves. One of the biggest hurdles athletes face is pacing. Some athletes go out too fast or not fast enough.
Parent Volunteers We encourage parents to come to meets and help out at practice. We will be doing time trials March 18-19 and will need at least 8 timers to help. Stop watches will be provided and clip boards too. We are also looking for volunteers for meets, to get times at the finish line and to help at our camp.
Snacks/ Healthy Nutrition The DIET No special diets will be offered or recommended. Healthy eating can be achieved by eating: WHOLE foods. Say no to junk foods Drink plenty of water
WATER All athletes are REQUIRED to bring a water bottle to all practices and meets (no water, no running). Sports drinks are great, but they are better for after practice or a race.
RUNNING SHOES An adequate pair of training shoes with good arch supports MUST be used. Without proper shoes, runners will not be permitted to practice. Tennis shoes, cleats, cross trainers or any other type of athletic shoes will not do. If you have a pair of running shoes, but have used them for another season, then it s time for a new pair.
SPIKES Spikes are permitted, but not mandatory. Spikes are a good investment, if students plan to run in high school. Only ¼ spikes allowed. There are mid distance and sprinter spikes so it may be helpful if your athlete feels the need wait until his/her events are known.
Injury/ Icing Shin splints Very common running aliment After practice ice for 15 minutes. Bag of peas work great For really serious pain/athlete use ice cups
