Issue 4 Page 2 Forth Valley Flyers Athletics Club Launch Night Opportunities for children in Forth Valley with a disability to take part in sport just got even better after a 6500 cheque from Awards for All has enabled the formation of a new athletics club, the Forth Valley Flyers. The club is only the second in Scotland to cater solely for people with physical, sensory or learning disabilities. It has taken a group of hard working parents from Falkirk, Stirling and Clackmannanshire two years to get it established. Membership has already reached 20, ranging from complete beginners to three national squad members, including Alloa wheelchair racer Meggan Dawson-Farrell. This is where I started the sport and I've been training here with the regional squad for two years, said Meggan, who earlier this month achieved the qualifying time for the 2012 London Marathon. And it s not just about sporting achievement. Equally important as the physical health benefits are the social opportunities for people to make new friends and build their self esteem. It helps a lot being a member of a club; you've got coaches to help you and support from friends, continued Meggan. When I first came here to train I was so shy that I wouldn t even speak to anyone. Since then I ve met loads of people and my confidence has grown with it. Said Shona Malcolm, National Development Officer for Disability Athletics and sportscotland s Central Regional Partnership s development squad head coach: This is the second only disability club, so from a national governing point of view I would like to see more of these around the country. This award will enable Forth Valley Flyers to buy specialist equipment, assist with weekly training costs and volunteer expenses, and provide a new event for athletes. We are very grateful to Awards for All, said Club Secretary Ann Finlayson. This award will go a long way to buying racing equipment and kit, taking children to competitions and paying our volunteers expenses Forth Valley Flyers meet at Grangemouth Stadium on a Friday evening between 5.30pm and 6.45pm. For further information contact ann.finlayson@btinternet.com Pictured below: Members of the Forth Valley Flyers Athletics Club at the launch night, 25th March 2011 at Grangemouth Stadium.
