IGNITION At FUEL we strive create a passion for golf within each and every child we teach. Ignition is a word that our coaches will use a lot; this passion drives motivation and your child wanting to get better. Ignition ensures that their golfing abilities are borne out of their own passion and motivation to be the best they can be. Ignition may come from anywhere, be it seeing Tiger Woods hole a putt for a major championship, maybe it s trying to beat Dad round the crazy golf course, or maybe it s the same as Finlay Jonson who is one of our scholarship students When I grow up I want to be a golfer so I can win trophies and buy my very own steam train. Wherever this passion comes from, our coaches know how precious it is and we aim to provide guidance and support for both you the parent and your child every step of the way. How to create ignition The FUEL Golf Programme is designed to also offer support to parents so that they can help their children get the best out of their learning and development, whilst avoiding those common pitfalls that can deter children. Our programme believes that children play golf for 4 main reasons based upon suggestions from the children themselves. Children play sports for 4 main reasons; Fun - Are they laughing, singing, happy? Friends - Are they chatting? Feels Good - Do they get excited? Good at it - Do they brag? We believe that if we can provide an environment with these fundaments then we are setting your child up for a lifelong passion in the game and to develop them as well rounded individuals. This is why you may see them singing, dancing, skipping, crawling and playing games and we encourage parents to see golf through the eyes of a child. Whilst we understand there are times to be specific and focus on technique and etiquette etc, we all must understand that there is a long time to deliver these pieces of information and our first aim is to help your child enjoy the game of golf. 3
ATHLETE Our programme has its roots firmly based upon science and our specialist junior coaches have designed the FUEL Golf programme upon years of research and fact based evidence to provide a comprehensive programme for lifelong athletic performance. Scientists such as Istivan Balyi have argued for years that to become an expert in anything it requires much time and practice durrrr! However, scientists such as Balyi and Ericsson suggests that on average it normally takes around 10 years and 10,000 hours of dedicated practice to perform at an elite level - some studies suggest that golf may even be more like a 20 year sport but we understood that this may differ from each individual. However, In this extended period of participation, a golfers training should alter significantly and our coaches believe that a 6 year olds training programme should be greatly different to a 26 year old who s looking to win the Masters. We believe that its much easier for children to learn the game if they are physically literate, therefore we promote children to learn how to develop fundamental movement skills and then fundamental sports skills. This is the natural progression from simple functional movements such as striking a big ball with a hockey stick to striking a small golf ball with a golf club. Skipping these basic movement skills can be detrimental for a child s development and hinder their progression and enjoyment of the game. Experts in athletic development and golf such as Dr Greg Rose and Dr Ernst B Zwick suggest that children who develop a core of fundamental movement skills first will develop fundamental sports skills such as putting, chipping etc at a faster rate and will peak at a higher level of expertise than those who try to rush their child s development. Therefore we focus on creating athletes before the golfer. We provide motivation to become good athletes through regular gradings and target crucial movement skills for golf such as striking, power and co-ordination. These movement skills are graded using different coloured wrist bands. 4
ELITE GOLFERS Once we have ignited a passion for the game in your child and developed their fundamental movement skills we then start to focus on their golfing abilities or Fundamental Sports Skills as we phrase it. Our comprehensive curriculum provides your child with all the information they require to become an elite junior golfer. They will learn about areas such as advanced green reading, swing sequence, order of play, rules, how to practice and much, much more. Once your child has learnt about these areas we strive to create an environment where your child has the drive and commitment to want to master them in and away from their sessions. We offer different motives for your child to want to get better such as competitions on appropriate length golf courses, a comprehensive credit system where they have the chance to win prizes for practicing and playing, physical and golf skills grading s to drive their skill and physical development, and all juniors enrolled on the programme receive a FREE JUNIOR GOLF MEMBERSHIP at Q-Hotels Golf Facilities to help create more accessibility to the game. From these motives on offer we hope that your child will strive to improve and want to get better physically, technically and mentally. We consider these three elements essential for your child to become the best golfer they can be and enjoy the game to its fullest. Our expert coaches will be there every step of the way to help guide both children and parents in the game. We are confident that over the coming years the FUEL Golf Programme will develop into the biggest hot bed of talent within the U.K as children progress up our unique grading systems which can be seen below.
