HELP US CONTINUE TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE

AN OVERVIEW OF THE OAKVILLE SPEED SKATING CLUB MISSION STATEMEMENT: To provide speed skating skills and training to people of all ages with respect and consideration to the needs of our skaters, whether recreational or competitive. Skating sessions are run in a manner to ensure everyone reaches their optimal goal. The Oakville Club believes in the development of skaters from within its own ranks and does not recruit/register skaters from other Clubs who are already talented/experienced. Established in 1994, the Oakville Speed Skating Club originally had 20 members, one hour of ice per week, no safety mats, and very old speed skates on loan from the Ontario Speed Skating Association. A few years later, the Club became an independent short-track speed skating program. The Club s home rink is located at the River Oaks Community Centre on Olympic sized pad. The Club is run entirely by non-paid volunteers, from our Club Executives to Certified Coaches, who dedicate countless hours for our members. We are also fortunate to have the support of sponsors and the co-operation of the Town of Oakville. Today the Oakville Speed Skating Club has developed into one of the largest and most successful Clubs in Ontario, with over 140 skaters, ranging in age from 4 to 70. Currently the club has approximately 110 skaters under the age of 18, 30 adult skaters, and access to 12 hours of ice per week. A large inventory of specialized rental speed skates has been assembled by the Club over the years for the use of its members. The Club offers several diverse and affordable Programs all of which allow for integration of Special Needs (Olympians). The two critical operating priorities that the Oakville Speed Skating Club is very proud of are: 1) Absolute Gender Neutrality in terms of composition and activities. Both male and female athletes fully and completely share any and all ice, coaching and equipment that are allocated to the club. Female and male members train on technique and compete freely against each other. Over 40% of the Club s Membership is female. 2) That all ability levels, from the introductory speed skating program to the advanced speed skaters have fair access to ice, coaching and equipment allocated to the club. The Oakville Club has never had an elite skater focus and is proud of its tradition of taking complete novices and with time developing them into competent and confident speed skaters. Over the years, the Club has consistently offered a winter recreational alternative for certain individuals, who for economic, physical or other reasons wish to explore and participate in an ice-based sport.

AN OVERVIEW OF THE OAKVILLE SPEED SKATING CLUB CONT D The Club has had a number of members with varying degrees of learning disabilities. Other sports present special challenges to certain individuals that are more easily overcome in the sport of speed skating. At its most basic level, people with disabilities can become comfortable with a sport that they understand asks them to do their best in these areas: with the best technique they can, going as fast as they can; not physically touching or interfering with other participants; and, turning left to the best of their ability. At more advanced levels the sport is, of course, far more complex and technical. However, at its more basic level, it offers rewards to certain challenged individuals that find other sports far more complex and difficult to enjoy. Over the past years, several families have received financial assistance on a variety of levels in order to permit them to experience and enjoy speed skating in the Oakville Community. The assistance was provided from general funds as the Club is committed to making the sport available to all persons regardless of economic status. Speed Skating is an attractive choice for many families living in Oakville. We believe it is important for the Oakville Community to provide another winter recreational choices for families. The growth in the participation is clear evidence that short track speed skating is gaining popularity and is meeting the needs of the Oakville Community. We want to continue to make this exciting Olympic sport accessible in Oakville so that more children can participate while they learn the virtues of discipline, tenacity, co-operation, respect, sportsmanship, and physical fitness. Speed skating creates a safe environment that promotes fair play and healthy camaraderie among skaters, parents, coaches and officials. Special Olympian Scott M. and Speed Skating Canada, Level III Coach, Matt O Donnell

THE POTENTIAL Look closely at the photo on our front cover. Only a few years ago the young man in the middle, Patrick Duffy (holding a Club Appreciation Certificate) was one of Oakville s youngest short track speed skating Provincial Champions. He now regularly represents Canada on the World Cup Circuit achieving International/World Class Successes and was a 2014 Olympic alternate for the Canadian Short Track Speed Skate Team As Canadians, we have witnessed the excitement and pride that is generated by this exhilarating Olympic sport. The fact that, internationally, Canadian speed skaters have been among the most consistently successful in the past decades demonstrates the marked potential for speed skating. COMPETITION ACCOMPLISHMENTS Over the past Decades the Oakville Speed Skating Club has continually advanced skaters to the Aged Class, Elite Provincial Racing Series and to the Provincial Championships more than any other club in the Province. Our Club skaters perform extremely well at competitions earning Podium finishes. By way of example, at the 2014 recent Provincial Championship, Oakville skaters comprised 16% of the field (more than any other Club in the Province, many drawing from massive populations) and took home 24% of the medals and 42% of all Oakville skaters attending won medals. The Oakville Club has continually advanced skaters to the Canadian Eastern and National Championships. Club members currently hold several Provincial and Ontario Winter Games time records in various distances. With the focus on coaching, practice, training and technique the Club has developed some of the finest speed skaters in the Province. Many of the Club s volunteers have specifically received recognition for their services to the sport by the local community and the Ontario Speed Skating Association. Bronze, Silver, and Gold Level Sponsorships are available from $149 to $499

HOW THE SPONSORSHIP FUNDS WILL BE USED Funds generated by the Sponsorship Program will be used for the following Club expenditures: Offset the high cost of ice time purchased from the Town of Oakville which amounts to approximately $60,000, or well in excess of $2,000 per week. Currently the Club s fee based revenue and skate rental revenue essentially goes to just cover the cost of the purchase of ice from the Town of Oakville and Storage Room Rental at the Arena. Approximately 95% of the Club s entire budget goes toward the purchase of ice. Sponsorship funds and member fundraising are needed to cover the additional costs facing the Club, of which less than 1% goes toward administrative expenses. Continue to provide a reasonably priced non-traditional ice based alternative sport for the residents of Oakville. Provide financial assistance, when needed, to all families regardless of their economic situation. Due to the fact that competitions are all over the Province of Ontario, travelling expenses are incurred by our volunteer coaches. Sponsorship Funds will directly offset travel costs and direct out-of-pocket costs of the entirely Volunteer coaches for the benefit of the entire membership. Specialized and costly equipment such as jigs, stones, blade benders, and blade rockering equipment to keep Club speed skating blades in optimal shape. Sponsorship funds will go towards these equipment upgrades and new specialized equipment for the use of the entire membership. The Club has a large inventory of rental skates that requires constant turnovers. Provide financial assistance to skaters who qualify to travel to Competitions outside the Province. To help offset other expenses incurred by the Club: Town Room Rental Fees small office and room for Protective Safety Mats at Arena Ontario Speed Skating Association Fees determined by the number of Registered Club Membership Liability Insurance and property insurance Website expenses A limited inventory of Club Skin Suits and Specialized CSA Speed Skating Racing Helmets to be borrowed when attending competitions. Club Fun Activities Throughout the Season the Club holds a number of fun activities for members Recognition of Personal Milestone Achievements; Club Mini Meets with awards, Christmas Party, Awards Night and Banquet Dinner. Provide some assistance to Coaches and Volunteer Officials to pay for certification and training. As with many youth sports, growth in participation creates many significant challenges that require the assistance of the community and businesses that operate therein. The Oakville Speed Skating Club provides an opportunity for local businesses, families, and individuals, to sponsor the Club at various levels that are affordable and receive visibility that this demographic profile presents.
