Although Grand Canyon is not eligible to compete in the WAC Tournament, the Antelopes will play a role in determining the seeding of the other eight teams, including the Redhawks, who can finish anywhere from the third seed to the eighth seed heading into the final three weekends of the regular season. THE BAKERSFIELD GAME: Seattle University struggled to find its offense, allowing Bakersfield to open a significant lead in the second half as the Roadrunners defeated the Redhawks, 83-65, last Saturday night at Rabobank Arena. In the first half, Bakersfield would score 11 points over a four-and-a-half minute span, with Issiah Grayson and Brandon Barnes scoring four points apiece during the stretch. After Clarence Trent hit a three-pointer to close the Redhawk deficit to seven, Grayson made a layup as the first half ended to give the Roadrunners a 32-23 advantage at halftime. Three-pointers by Emerson Murray and Isiah Umipig in the first two-and-a-half minutes of the second half kept the Redhawks within nine, but Bakersfield went on a 7-2 run over the next three minutes, capped by a three-pointer from Grayson, to open a 14-point advantage at 47-33. Seattle U scored eight unanswered points, starting with a three-pointer by Luiz Bidart and concluding with consecutive layups by D Vonne Pickett Jr., to draw to within six at 47-41 seven minutes into the second half. After a three-pointer by Jarell Flora kept the Redhawks within six points, the Roadrunners put the game away with a 14-2 scoring run over a fourand-a-half minute stretch. Bakersfield went 15-for-20 from the free throw line in the final three-and-a-half minutes of the contest to complete the season sweep of the Redhawks. Umipig led Seattle U with 12 points and four assists, plus he pulled down five rebounds, while Murray scored 10 points in the game. Adenekan contributed nine points, three rebounds, and four blocked shots, but the Redhawks were hurt by shooting just 35.9 percent from the field (23-of-64), including 9-of-34 from behind the three-point line, and committing 18 turnovers that led to 18 Bakersfield points.

SCOUTING GRAND CANYON: The Antelopes come into Thursday s game with a 12-11 overall record, including a 7-3 conference record good enough for third place in the league standings. Grand Canyon has won five of its last six games, but has not played since a 79-70 victory over Bakersfield on Feb. 8. The Antelopes are averaging 71.5 points per game and giving up 70.0 points per contest. As a team, Grand Canyon is shooting 43.1 percent from the field, including 35.1 percent from behind the three-point line, and 74.5 percent from the free throw line, 29th in the country. Jerome Garrison leads the team at 16.1 points per game, including a.796 free throw shooting percentage. Killian Larson is averaging a double-double with 15.7 points and 11.0 rebounds per game, plus he is shooting 50.8 percent from the field and 77.7 percent from the free throw line. Daniel Alexander is contributing 12.7 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 1.8 blocked shots per game. SERIES HISTORY: This is the third meeting all-time between Seattle U and Grand Canyon, but the first taking place in Seattle. The Antelopes have won the previous two contests, defeating the Redhawks 78-77 on Dec. 17, 2002, and 71-63 earlier this season. EARLIER THIS SEASON: Seattle University cut a doubledigit lead down to four, but the Redhawks could not get any closer, as Grand Canyon held on for a 71-63 victory Jan. 25 at the GCU Arena in Phoenix. Down 43-25 three minutes into the second half, the Redhawks put together an 18-4 scoring run over the next seven minutes to close their deficit to four at 47-43 halfway through the second half. Grand Canyon settled down, starting with a traditional three-point play by Jerome Garrison, and extended its lead back to nine at 58-49 with less than four minutes left in regulation. A traditional three-point play from William Powell brought the Redhawks back to within four at 59-55, but Garrison hit a three-pointer with 2:19 remaining in the second half, and the Antelopes would go 5-for- 6 from the free throw line in the final minute to close out the contest. Powell led the Redhawks with nine points, plus he pulled down four rebounds and earned two steals. Jack Crook finished with seven points and seven rebounds, and D Vonne Pickett Jr. also collected seven points to go along with four assists. For the game, Seattle U shot 34.4 percent from the field (22-of-64), including 4-of-17 from behind the threepoint line, and 55.6 percent from the free throw line (15-of-27). The Redhawks pulled down 21 offensive rebounds as part of a 46-37 rebounding edge and scored 20 points off 11 Grand Canyon turnovers. BIG MAN OUT FOR SEASON: Sophomore forward Deshaun Sunderhaus will miss the rest of the 2013-14 season with a torn ACL in his left knee, an injury suffered in the first half of the Jan. 25 game at Grand Canyon. He is expected to fully recover from the injury in time for the 2014-15 season. COMING BACK: The Redhawks have rallied from halftime deficits four times this season. Seattle U came back from a 14-point deficit with 4:24 left in the second half against Cal State Fullerton on Nov. 13, from a five-point deficit with 6:26 remaining at Cal State Northridge Dec. 5, from a seven-point deficit with 3:19 left in regulation against Norfolk State Dec. 19, and from a 16-point deficit with 14:43 left in the second half at Idaho Feb. 1. HONORS FOR UMIPIG: Junior guard Isiah Umipig has made an immediate impact for Seattle University in the 2013-14 season after sitting out last season. The transfer from Cal State Fullerton has been named Western Athletic Conference Player of the Week twice by the conference office. He also received WAC Player of the Non-Conference Season honors from College Hoops Daily. HONORING A LEGEND: Longtime high school basketball coach Ed Pepple will be honored during the night. Ed Pepple retired from high school basketball coaching in 2009 after 52 years. He won 952 games and four state championship titles while becoming the basketball coach with the most wins in state history. Nearly 50 of his players went on to play in college and two played in the NBA. WAC BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT: All-session tickets for the WAC Basketball Tournament March 12-15 at the Orleans Arena are now available at (206) 398-GOSU. head coach cameron dollar (ucla 97) FIFTH season at seattle U/sixth season overall 60-83 (.420) at Seattle U/71-105 (.403) overall Cameron Dollar is in his fifth season as head coach at Seattle University. In just a short span of time, he has shown why many college basketball writers consider him one of the rising stars in the coaching industry. Dollar took a squad of several newcomers through the 2011-12 season, competing with powerhouse programs such as Virginia and Washington. The team got rolling midway through the season, winning nine of its last 12 contests, including eight in a row at KeyArena. Thanks in part to Dollar s coaching, Aaron Broussard established himself as one of the best players in program history, finishing his career 13th on the school s all-time scoring list. Cervante Burrell improved significantly during his three seasons playing under Dollar, and Eric Wallace made an important contribution to the team s success after transferring in from DePaul for his senior season. Seattle U picked up 11 victories during the 2010-11 season, including the team s second straight victory over Oregon State and a road victory at ACC school Virginia. The Redhawks also played a tight game at Pac-10 school Stanford and put up its best performance against Washington since starting the reclassification process in front of over 11,000 fans at KeyArena. With Dollar at the helm, Seattle U was invited to participate in the 2K Sports Classic Benefiting Coaches vs. Cancer, opening the season at the University of Maryland. The Redhawks were also chosen for the ESPN BracketBuster series of games, defeating Northern Illinois on the road. Using an up-tempo style with aggressive defense, Dollar led Seattle U to a 17-14 record in 2009-10, making the Redhawks the first team to post a winning record playing a full Division I schedule in its first year as a Division I counter. The team started to gain national recognition after a 77-74 victory at Utah, and then made history later in the year with a 99-48 win at Oregon State, the worst home loss ever for the Beavers. Dollar and his squad also defended Elgin Baylor Court at KeyArena during its first year of existance, finishing with a 10-3 record at home, including exciting victories over Fresno State, Weber State, and UC Irvine. Seattle U won eight of its last nine games, posting last-second road wins at Portland State and at San Jose State in the process. He served seven years as an asssistant coach at the University of Washington before coming to Seattle U. As the top assistant for Lorenzo Romar at Washington, he helped the Huskies win their first Pac-10 outright regular season championship since 1953 in the 2008-09 season. Washington advanced to the semifinals of the Pac-10 Tournament and to the second round of the 2009 NCAA Tournament. Prior to his arrival at UW, Dollar served three years as an assistant coach on Romar s Saint Louis University staff. He helped the Billikens to a three-year record of 51-44 (.537), including a 2000 Conference USA Tournament championship that secured the league s automatic NCAA berth. He became the nation s youngest head coach in 1998 when, at age 22, he took the reins of the Southern California College program in Costa Mesa, Calif. The Vanguards, who returned just six players from the previous season, posted an 11-22 record in Dollar s only season, but recorded wins over NAIA Top 25 teams Westmont and Azusa Pacific. As a player, Dollar lettered four seasons at UCLA before graduating in 1997. He has chosen to remain in Seattle, the site of the Bruins 1995 NCAA Championship victory. UCLA defeated Arkansas 89-78 at the Kingdome. A four-year letterman at UCLA from 1994-97, Dollar achieved national recognition in 1995 as a pivotal player in UCLA s NCAA championship season when he took over for injured starter Tyus Edney in the title game. In Dollar s final three collegiate seasons, the Bruins won the NCAA title and reached the Sweet 16 and Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament. Dollar averaged 5.0 points and 3.7 assists per game during his four-year career. He was recruited to UCLA by then-bruins assistant Lorenzo Romar and was reunited with his coach in 1999 when Romar added Dollar to his staff at Saint Louis University. Dollar is a native of Atlanta, where his father, Don, was the long-time coach at Clarkston High School and is now serving as one of his assistant coaches at Seattle U. Cameron and his wife, Maureen, live in Seattle. They have three children: Jalen (born April 26, 2005), Giselle (born Feb. 12, 2007), and Jason (born Dec. 23, 2008).
