Chicago State returns just four letterwinners from last season and welcomes in six newcomers, including five freshmen. The Jaguars have started the season 0-4, most recently suffering a 76-54 loss at Southern Illinois on Nov. 20. The Series It is the third matchup between the Boilermakers and Chicago State but it has been nearly 35 years since the teams last met. Purdue won the most recent contest 54-38 on Jan. 8, 1977, in Mackey Arena. The Cougars defeated Purdue 66-53 on Feb. 14, 1976, also in West Lafayette. Last Time Out With a balanced offense and a smothering defense, Purdue remained unbeaten with a 65-39 victory against UT Martin. Three players scored in double figures for the Boilermakers. Sam Ostarello scored 10 of her 13 in the second half to lead the Purdue. Courtney Moses added 12 points and eight rebounds and Brittany Rayburn contributed 11 points and four assists. In winning its first three games, UT Martin averaged 80 points and 12 made three-pointers but the Skyhawks shot just.278 (15 of 54) overall,.273 (6 of 22) from the three-point line while scoring less than half its previous mean. Heather Butler led UT Martin with 19 points but Jasmine Newsome, who entered the game with a 25.3 scoring average, was held to just two points on 1-of-9 shooting with eight turnovers. With a deep rotation of post players, Purdue also controlled things inside, scoring 43 of its points in the lane. Next Up Purdue departs for the Cancun Challenge at the Moon Palace Resort outside Cancun, Mexico, for a contest against Tulane (Nov. 24) followed by a rematch with 2011 first-round NCAA Championship opponent Kansas State on Nov. 25. Head Coach Sharon Versyp Former Purdue point guard, Sharon Versyp is in her sixth season as head coach of the Boilermakers. She has a 114-61 record at Purdue and a career mark of 231-126 in 12 seasons as a collegiate head coach. Versyp has led the Boilermakers to two Big Ten Tournament championships (2007 and 2008) and to the NCAA Tournament Elite Eight twice (2007 and 2009). Versyp was inducted into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame in April of 2010. Stingy Defense By holding opponents to 36.6 percent from the field last season, the Boilermakers tied the second-lowest opponent season field goal percentage in school history. So far this season, Purdue has limited two opponents to under 28.0 percent from the floor. IUPUI shot a season-low 26.2 percent from the field, including 16.7 percent from three-point range while UT Martin was held to 27.8 percent shooting, including 27.3 percent from beyond the arc. Taking Care Of The Rock After committing a season-high 23 turnovers at Bowling Green, the Boilermakers turned the ball over just seven times at home against UT Martin. Point guard KK Houser went from a career-high 10 turnovers at BGSU to zero miscues against UT Martin. Purdue s seven turnovers ties for sixth for fewest turnovers in a game in school history. Sharing The Ball The Boilermakers dished out 20 assists on 25 made field goals. They also recorded an assist-to-turnover ratio of 2.9 with 20 assists against just seven turnovers. I Know You On the Chicago State sidelines is assistant coach Gwen Burton who played two years at Louisville (1993 and 1994) when Purdue assistant coach Martin Clapp was an assistant coach for the Cardinals. Clapp was Burton s position coach.

Guyton Has Big Second Half With the Boilermakers trailing by two, 18-16 at the half in Bowling Green on Nov. 17, head coach Sharon Versyp wanted to establish an inside presence in the second period and senior Alex Guyton answered the call. The 6-foot-3 forward was scoreless in the first half, but finished the game with 12 points, including six in the first four minutes of second-half action. Records Watch - Brittany Rayburn has scored 1,336 points in her career, ranking 15th all time at Purdue, 40 points shy of passing Erin Lawless for 14th place. - Rayburn is 10th in career scoring average at 12.8 points per game. - Rayburn is currently seventh for made three-pointers in a career at Purdue with 143. - Rayburn is fifth in career made free throws with 417 and third in career free throw percentage, averaging 83.4 percent. - Rayburn has played in 104 games in her Boilermaker career and started 66. - Moses set the Purdue freshman season record for threepointers with 54, passing Brittany Rayburn s mark of 46. The sophomore record for threes, held by Jodi Howell, is 56. Moses has hit five three-pointers so far this season. Miss Basketball The Boilermakers have five former Miss Basketball honorees on their bench, including head coach Sharon Versyp who was the first Indiana Miss Basketball to play at Purdue. Brittany Rayburn is the seventh and Courtney Moses the eighth Indiana Miss Basketball to don the Old Gold and Black. KK Houser was Nebraska s Miss Basketball as a senior and Sam Ostarello earned the Miss Basketball title for South Dakota in her senior season. Preseason Prognostication The Boilermakers were picked No. 2 behind Penn State by both the Big Ten coaches and the media panel in the conference preseason poll. Purdue is ranked in both the major college women s basketball polls, No. 15 by the Associated Press and No. 20 in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll. Purdue started the preseason No. 17 in the AP poll, marking the first time since 2008 that Purdue was ranked in the preseason by the AP. Program Milestone Purdue recorded its 700th victory in women s basketball against UT Martin on Nov. 20. Since the inaugural 1975-76 season, the Boilermakers have compiled a record of 700 wins versus 380 losses. Sharon Versyp was the head coach for another of Purdue s milestones, the 600th win which came at Iowa (68-58) on Jan. 3, 2007. Mingo missed four games last year after contracting a life-threatening case of bacterial meningitis in November that caused the cancellation of Purdue s trip to Mexico. Mingo sustained partial hearing loss due to the illness. CLASS Act Brittany Rayburn is one of 30 NCAA Division I women s basketball players nominated for Lowe s Senior CLASS Award. An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the Lowe s Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities. Rayburn has led the Boilermakers in scoring the last two seasons. Houser Back In Action One year and one day from point guard KK Houser s ACL injury, the 5-foot-6 point guard scored tied her career high with a game-high 18 points against IUPUI. The Lincoln, Neb., native also set a career best with six steals while pulling down four rebounds and dishing out three assists in Purdue s 75-45 victory. Free Throw Makers The Boilermakers will look to match or improve upon their school record free throw percentage last season. Last year, Purdue made 505 of 650 free throws for a school mark of 77.7 percent in 2010-11, led by Brittany Rayburn s 168 of 188 (89.4 percent). Rayburn finished just shy of the school season record of 89.5 percent set by Katie Gearlds in 2006-07. Courtney Moses also made over 80 percent of her free throws last year, hitting 62 of 72 for 86.1 percent. Moses is flawless from the free throw line this season, making all four of her free throw attempts. Experience Counts Purdue has five seniors on the active roster and four of five starters back from last year s 21-12 team that advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Redmon To Sit Out Sophomore Camille Redmon will sit out this season after transferring from Grayson County College. An NCAA qualifier out of high school, Redmon signed with Kansas State but only attended summer school there before transferring to Grayson County where she played as a freshman. The 6-foot-4 forward will have three years of eligibility starting next season. Team Captains Seniors Drey Mingo, Brittany Rayburn and Samantha Woods were chosen as team captains this season. Putting The Student In Student-Athlete The Purdue women s basketball team does not shy away from challenging majors. Seniors Chelsea Jones and Drey Mingo both are majoring in biology with plans to attend medical school after graduation. Senior Brittany Rayburn and sophomore transfer Camille Redmon are both animal sciences majors, and Rayburn plans to attend vet school when her basketball career ends. Senior Samantha Woods is majoring in chemical engineering with a concentration in entrepreneurship. Junior Sam Ostarello is pursuing a major in movement and sport sciences and a minor in forensics while sophomore Courtney Moses plans to major in applied exercise and health with a concentration as a health exercise specialist. Sharon Versyp, a former Boilermaker point guard, has led Purdue to two Big Ten Tournament championships and two NCAA Tournament Elite Eight appearances in her five seasons as the head coach at her alma mater. At Purdue, she has averaged 22 wins per season, including a 17-7 record in the postseason. Versyp signed a contract extension that will secure her presence on the Boilermaker sidelines through the 2016-17 season. Versyp s impact on basketball in the Hoosier state was recognized on April 24, 2010, when she was inducted into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame in her first year of eligibility, an honor that includes Larry Bird and John Wooden. The Mishawaka, Ind., native is known for her prowess in defense, game preparation, individual player development and team building. Recruiting is a key to success and Versyp and her staff have proven that they can attract elite players to Purdue. Each of Versyp s five signing classes has been ranked in the top 15. Equally impressive to the on-court accolades are the team s academic achievements under Versyp s guidance. For three-straight years, the Boilermakers earned a team GPA of 3.10 or better. In 2010-11, Versyp guided a team without any seniors to a 21-12 record and the second round of the NCAA Tournament. An extremely promising season, turned into one filled with unprecedented adversity. First, starting point guard, KK Houser suffered an ACL injury four minutes into the first regular-season game. Then, less than 48 hours after Purdue captured its second Preseason WNIT championship under Versyp, starting forward Drey Mingo was hospitalized with a life-threatening case of bacterial meningitis. Mingo would rebound from her illness and was a key along with Brittany Rayburn and Courtney Moses in Purdue s late season success. Along the way, Versyp claimed her 100th victory at Purdue with a 65-64 win over Michigan on Jan. 6. Versyp returned to her alma mater as Purdue s eighth head coach on April 10, Head Coach Sharon Versyp - Sixth Year at Purdue - School Record 114-61 (56-30 Big Ten) Career Record 231-126 (65-37 Big Ten) 2006. Versyp, a former Boilermaker point guard, as a player led her teams to three consecutive winning seasons when the program had enjoyed only one winning campaign in the previous 10 years. In her first year as head coach at Purdue, Versyp compiled a 31-6 record that included a second-place finish in the Big Ten regular season, a Big Ten Tournament title and an appearance in the NCAA Elite Eight. Versyp was named the 2007 WBCA Region VI Coach of the Year. Versyp s win percentage in 2006-07 of 83.8 percent (31-6) was tops for a first-year coach. The 31 wins equals the second-most in school history and Versyp is the only firstyear head coach to achieve a 30-win record. Versyp was the head coach at Indiana prior to Purdue, where she led her team to a 19-14 season, 9-7 in the Big Ten and the quarterfinals of the post-season WNIT. The nine-game improvement was the second largest turn-around in school history for a first-year head coach. Prior to her stint with the Hoosiers, Versyp was the head coach at Maine for five seasons where she amassed a 98-51 record, including a 67-19 America East Conference record. Versyp s teams won three straight America East regular season championships (2003, 2004, 2005) and in 2004 also won the America East Tournament title earning an NCAA Tournament berth.
