Mississippi State vs. Southern Miss Softball Game The Mississippi State Bulldogs softball team is playing the Golden Eagles in Hattiesburg on Tuesday, March 28, 2017, at 6:00 p.m. USM is inviting all area 4-H members. Livestock Information 4-H Dairy Judging Contest The 2017 Mississippi 4-H Dairy Judging Contest will be held on Friday, March 31, 2017, at the MSU Bearden Dairy in Starkville. Contest registration will begin at 8:30 a.m. The contest will be open to senior and junior 4-H teams and individuals. The contest will be held in conjunction with Mississippi FFA, so it is acceptable for a team to compete for 4-H and FFA in the contest. Call the Extension Office at 601-403-2280 if you are interested. 4-H Livestock Judging Contest The 2017 Mississippi 4-H Livestock Judging Contest will be held on Saturday, May 20, 2017, on the MSU campus in Starkville. The contest will be open to senior and junior 4-H teams and individuals as it was for the 2016 contest. This will serve as the state qualifying contest for the senior winning team to represent Mississippi 4-H at the national level. Mississippi 4-H Scholarship Program If you have completed the requirements for high school graduation or have started college work, there are several 4-H scholarships for which you may qualify. You can pick up the applications at the Pearl River County Extension Service Office or you can find them at https://extension.msstate.edu/scholarships-for-4-h. There is also a scholarship opportunity through MSU if you are an entering freshman. You may qualify for an additional $1,000 if you are named Outstanding 4-H er of the Year in Pearl River County. The applications are due in the Pearl River County Extension Service Office by Thursday, March 23, 2017. Meats Judging Workshop Have you ever wondered why some meats you eat are tougher than others? Have you noticed that some meats have more white in them? If you are ages 14-18 and want to learn how to choose the best cuts of meat, the Meats Judging Workshop is for you! It will be held on Saturday, April 1, 2017, from 9:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. at the MSU Meat Laboratory. You will get the opportunity to see some classes and retail ID cuts to learn more about Meats Judging. This workshop will prepare you for the Meats Judging Contest at 4-H Congress on June 1. There must be 10 participants for them to hold this workshop. Call the Pearl River County Extension Service Office by Monday, March 27, to let us know if you would like to participate or if you have questions. Poultry Chain Project If you are interested in participating in the Poultry Chain Project, it is time to start getting geared up. In order to participate, you must contact the Pearl River County Extension Service Office by Monday, April 24, 2017. You will order your chicks and have them delivered the week of May 19-26. When ordering your chicks, you will need to order only female chicks (or pullets) in one of two categories: Meat type category are New Hampshire, Plymouth Rock, Rhode Island Reds, Delaware, Dominique or Wyandotte or Egg type category are Leghorn, Andalusians, Ancona, Spanish or Minorca. Now is the time to order them. If you plan to participate in the Poultry Chain Project, you must attend a Biosecurity and information training. Call the Pearl River County Extension Service at 601-403-2280 for more information or to get a list of hatcheries from which you can order. State 4-H Ambassadors Have you been at a contest or event and seen the 4-H ers wearing the green blazers? Do you want a green blazer of your own? You can earn one by becoming a State 4-H Ambassador if you are 15-18 years old. Your cover letter, 4-H vitae (resume) and 2 letters of support must be submitted to the Pearl River County Extension Service Office by Monday, April 24, 2017. Interviews for those chosen will be held on June 1, 2017 at 4-H Congress. For more information, call the office at 601-403-2280. State 4-H Council Officer Are you interested in running for a State 4-H Council office? If you are between the ages of 14-18, you can run for President, Vice President, Secretary, Parliamentarian, Reporter, Song Leader or Southeast Region Vice President. 4-H Shooting Sports State 4-H Shooting Sports Ambassador Team 4-H members who are 14-18 years old as of January 1 may apply for membership to the State 4-H Shooting Sports Ambassador Team. To apply you must submit a resume and cover letter to the Pearl River County Extension Service Office by Thursday, March 23, 2017. Applicants must have been active participants in 4-H for at least one year and must be dependable, punctual, and willing to make public appearances on behalf of 4-H. If you are selected to serve as a Shooting Sports Ambassador, you will represent Mississippi 4-H at club, county, district, state, and national events and activities through leadership and promotional roles. You will assume an active role in 4-H programming through committee and task force membership, participate in training workshops and meetings, and assist with 4-H Day at the State Fair. Qualified perspective applicants will be interviewed by a panel of judges. The date for interviews will be announced at a later date. 4-H Contests Now is the time to think about and start preparing for the contests in which you want to compete at Southeast Region 4-H Project Achievement Day (ages 8-13) or State 4-H Congress (ages 14-18). County Contests Day will be held on Saturday, May 13, 2017, State 4-H Congress will be held on May 31-June 2, 2017 at MSU and Southeast Region 4-H Project Achievement Day will be held on Tuesday, July 11, 2017. Horse Information Ranch Handling and Cow Horse Boxing A Ranch Handling and Cow Horse Boxing Clinic is being provided on Saturday, May 13, 2017 at the Forrest County Multipurpose Center in Hattiesburg. The clinic will begin at 9:00 a.m. and conclude at 3:00 p.m. The cost of the clinic is $30, and lunch will be provided. Dr. Clay Cavinder will teach how to handle cattle for the boxing portion of working cow horse and give instruction on ranch handling (2 new classes to be offered at the 2017 State 4-H Horse Show).
