OF MARYLAND EASTERN SHORE MEN S BASKETBALL 2017-18 QUICK FACTS SUSTAINED SUCCESS: After finishing the 2014-15 season at 18-15 - its best season in two decades - Maryland Eastern Shore basketball went 10-22 in 2015-16 and 14-20 last year. The Hawks have won double-digit games in three straight seasons for the first time since four in a row from 1998-99 through 2001-02. Eastern Shore s 42 wins over three seasons are its most since 1992-93 through 1994-95 when the Hawks won 45. GREAT EXPECTATIONS: The Hawks finished with a winning record in conference play last season and advanced to the MEAC Tournament semifinals for the first time since 1993-94. Eastern Shore returns four starters from last year s squad, including senior guards Ryan Andino and Logan McIntosh. Sophomore forward Tyler Jones should see more action, and sophomore guard Ahmad Frost returns to the court after an injury that kept him sidelined since January 2016. Incoming freshmen and redshirt returners, including local standout Colen Gaynor, will fill in the gaps. MAC THE KNIFE: Logan McIntosh returns to run the point for the Hawks this season. McIntosh averaged 8.7 PPG and dished out 4.4 APG, good for fifth in the MEAC. He turned on his scoring chops late in the season, scoring 16 points in two conference games and notching the game-winning layup in the Hawks upset win over Hampton in the MEAC quarterfinals. DEADLY DINO: Ryan Andino is Eastern Shore s top sharpshooter and lead returning scorer. The 2014-15 MEAC Rookie of the Year averaged 13.0 PPG last year, good for 17th in the MEAC. Andino finished fourth in the NCAA in total three pointers (121) and threes per game (3.56). He eclipsed the 20-point threshold seven times last season, including a career-high 31 points (9-13 3PT) at North Carolina A&T on Jan. 9. He is the first four-year senior to come up through The Shore in the Bobby Collins era. BACK FOR MORE: Eastern Shore faces another tough nonconference slate, playing 12 of their 15 non-league games away from the Hytche Center. In addition to taking on fresh foes like Liberty, Creighton, Iowa State, and Drake, the Hawks will meet several familiar faces in the first two months. Maryland, St. Bonaventure, Georgetown, Old Dominion, Duquesne, and Virginia Tech are all brand-name schools The Shore has faced in the Bobby Collins era; the Hawks knocked off St. Bonaventure and Duquesne in one road trip during 2014-15. Ryan Andino led the way with 23 points, shooting 6-of-15 from beyond the arc. Bakari Copeland poured in 22 points, while Tyler Jones chipped in 19 off the bench. UNFROZEN: After their first nonwinning season in a decade, the Patriots rebounded in 2016-17, finishing the year ranked fourth in NCCAA Division II. Valley Forge has finished top-two in the East Region 11 years running and has earned three national runner-up finishes (last 2011-12). THE ONE TO WATCH: Senior guard Alex Sanchez, who led the team in scoring last season, will be even more important for a UVF squad that lost its six leading scorers below him. The Orlando native scored 18.2 PPG last season and leads all returners in assists (1.7) and steals (1.5). Sanchez scored 18 points but shot just 6-of-16 from the floor in the Patriots 86-85 overtime loss to Kentucky Christian in the NCCAA D2 semifinals. He earned national all-tournament honors in addition to his second-team NCCAA All-American nod. NEW KID IN TOWN: The D.J. Damazo era begins tonight for Valley Forge. The first-year head coach replaces Patriots legend Jon Mack, who retired after 16 seasons and over 200 wins at his alma mater. Damazo graduated from Geneva College in 2013, starting on the basketball team for two seasons. He then became an assistant coach at Blackhawk High School, his alma mater, in Beaver Falls, Pa., before signing on as assistant varsity and head JV coach at Eastern University in Philadelphia. Damazo earned a Master s in organizational leadership from EU before earning his first head coaching job at UVF. VALLEY FORGE NUMERICAL ROSTER NO NAME Pos. Yr. Ht. Wt. Head Coach Bobby Collins Hometown: Southern Pines, N.C. College: Eastern Kentucky, 91 4 th Season at Eastern Shore (42-57) 16 th as collegiate head coach (223-230) Bobby Collins is entering his fourth season as the head coach at Maryland Eastern Shore. He was named the 19th head coach of the Hawks on April 8, 2014. In his first season, the Hawks concluded their year with an 18-15 overall record, the most wins by a UMES men s basketball team in 41 years. Though they suffered through a first-round exit in the College Insider Tournament (CIT), the Hawks still managed to earn a postseason berth for the first time since 1981. The winning mark was the first above.500 record for a UMES team since the 1993-94 season, while the third-place finish in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference is the best since that same year. The incredible turnaround year also saw widespread recognition of the accomplishments in Princess Anne with Collins winning MEAC Coach of the Year, as well as freshman Ryan Andino winning MEAC Rookie of the Year. Michael Myers also earned numerous awards, including Riley Wallace Player of the Year. Collins was named 2015 Ben Jobe Coach of the Year. In his second season at the helm of the Hawks, he again won double-digit games and produced a First-Team All-MEAC player in Dominique Elliott who was named to two All-American lists. His recruit, Dontae Caldwell, earned All-Rookie honors from the conference as well. During the 2016-17 season, the Hawks finished 14-20, including 9-7 in MEAC play, and won two games in the MEAC Tournament for the first time since the 1973-74 season. Senior Bakari Copeland was named First-Team All-MEAC. Collins arrived in Princess Anne after eight seasons as head coach at Winston-Salem State. Collins went 79-35 with the Rams in his final four seasons after the program reclassified from Division I, guiding the Rams to three Division II Tournament appearances. Overall, Collins posted a 116-116 record at WSSU. After seven seasons as an assistant at Hampton, Collins was promoted to head coach of the Pirates in 2002. He coached for four seasons, going 65-57 overall. Collins won MEAC Coach of the Year in 2005 and earned an NCAA Tournament berth in 2006, losing to Monmouth in the Opening Round. As an assistant under Steve Merfeld in 2001, Collins helped the 15th-seeded Pirates upset #2 Iowa State, one of just eight 15-over-2 upsets in NCAA Tournament history. A 1991 graduate of Eastern Kentucky University, Collins was a fouryear starter on the men s basketball team where he was named to the Ohio Valley Conference (OVC) All-Freshman Team and Honorable Mention All-OVC as a senior. Following his graduation from EKU, Collins played professional basketball in Finland, where he earned MVP honors overseas in the Helsinki Classic Tournament in 1991. The son of two non-denominational ministers, Collins is the youngest of 10 siblings. He graduated from Pinecrest High School and guided his squad to a 38-9 record over his junior and senior seasons. In 1984, he earned All-State honors and was named Conference Player of the Year. COLLINS AS A HEAD COACH Year School Record Win% Conf.
