CIVIL WAR RE-ENACTMENT AND ENCAMPMENT MILITARY REGULATIONS All participants must be sixteen (16) years f age r lder t serve as sldiers. Persns yunger than sixteen (16) may serve as functinal field musicians if prficient as such, but nt as clr-bearers, messengers, etc. and must be twelve (12) r lder. WOMEN PORTRAYING SOLDIERS. The Museum endeavrs t faithfully represent the life and times f the 19 th century. During the war, wmen wh served in the ranks as men did s nly as lng as they were nt detected. We will fllw that fact f life. Wmen, wh wish t participate as enlisted men, may d s as lng as they are nt detected. Just as in the 19 th century, if they are "discvered" they will be asked t change t civilian dress. The museum and the event cmmittee have designated verall Unin and Cnfederate cmmanders and crdinatrs t facilitate the event. They will rganize the participants and designate the cmmand structure f thse units. NO ther fficers abve the rank f Captain will be allwed t participate in the event r n the battlefield withut prir apprval. All fficers must have the prper unifrm and accutrements specific fr an apprpriate military impressin. A museum staff persn will be respnsible fr the inspectin f artillery pieces prir t Saturday s battle. NO EXCEPTIONS. At any time during the weekend, museum staff may inspect any arms, including small arms and artillery pieces, fr safety reasns even if this inspectin causes the battles t start later than planned. T participate in a battle requires check-in prir t 9:00am n Saturday and participatin in all frmatins unless excused by museum management and the respective military cmmanders. Als required is a safety and unifrm inspectin and a signed "release frm liability" waiver, which is included in yur registratin materials. Clrs must be f full size and f prper cnstructin fr the perid the event is prtraying. SMALL ARM AND SHEATH KNIFE REGULATIONS MUSKETS: 3-band Enfield r Springfield with leather sling crrect fr musket. NO shtguns, Zuave rifles r ther tw band muskets will be allwed. N mdern r nn-authentic weapns will be allwed. Other pieces cnsidered crrect fr the perid are allwed. CARBINES: Only cavalrymen may carry carbines. PISTOLS: Only fficers, cavalrymen and artillerymen may carry pistls/revlvers. All revlvers MUST remain unladed. Firing f pistls/revlvers is nly allwed by munted cavalrymen. There must be NO discharge f weapns ther than during rganized battles, drills and/r demnstratins.
SHEATH KNIVES: Must remain sheathed at all times. NO EXCEPTIONS. SMALL ARM AMMUNITION REGULATIONS CARTRIDGES: Apprximately 60 grains, black pwder and prperly rlled in tan r white paper. All runds must be as authentic lking as pssible. NO cin wrappers, tape r staples. All cartridges must be made up in advance. N bulk r lse pwder (even in pwder flasks) will be allwed n the grunds. All runds must be inspected and apprved prir t the battle. ARTILLERY REGULATIONS Full-scale artillery is preferred. ¾ scale will be cnsidered n an individual basis. Abslutely n mrtars are allwed. Cannn barrels must be in gd cnditin and free frm pitting r ther structural damage. Carriages must be in gd cnditin and free frm cracks in their check pieces r the trail. Wheels must be in gd cnditin, free f dry rt, majr separatins r large cracks. Each artillery piece shall be equipped with a limber. Ammunitin bxes must be in gd cnditin and with a cmplete cpper cver. The bxes must be free f lse pwder. Artillery must use frictin primers r lcks. Firing by handguns, fuses, lighters, cigars, etc. is nt permitted. Charges shall cnsist f black pwder and aluminum fil nly. Charges are t be made frm 1F r cannn-grade black pwder nly - n additives, n flur, n Pyrdex, etc. N charge may be larger than 3 z. f pwder per inch f bre. Museum management has the right t crrect what they believe t be unsafe and/r inapprpriate actins r equipment. All charges must be inspected and apprved prir t the battle. Firing shall be in accrdance with guidelines set by the military crdinatrs f the hst units. Crew members must be at least 16 years f age t wrk any psitin n the piece. The designated Artillery Safety Officer(s) shall inspect all guns and crews fr safety. Nted deficiencies shall be crrected befre participatin is allwed. The Artillery Safety Officer(s) have ultimate authrity cncerning all matters related t Artillery safety and authrizatin fr Artillery participatin in Battle scenaris. As a thank yu frm the museum, artillery units will be reimbursed $100 per gun fr the purchase f pwder with a maximum f 6 paid guns per side. Nte: nly thse guns fired during the field battle will be reimbursed. CAVALRY REGULATIONS (MOUNTED UNITS) GENERAL N cavalryman will be made t perfrm any activity that they d nt feel can be perfrmed in a safe manner t themselves and/r thers.
Firearm inspectin f cavalry weapns will be perfrmed prir t every battle. Stallins will nt be permitted. Wmen shall nt be precluded frm participatin if a prper impressin f a cavalryman is made. All hrses must have current (dated within ne year) negative Cggins papers t participate in event. Papers must be shwn t a museum fficial prir t bringing hrses int the village. Failure t present current negative Cggins papers r refusal t allw fr the inspectin f animals cnstitutes grunds fr expulsin frm the event. If an attendee des nt have an up-t-date cggins test but is still planning n attending, they must cntact the directr f special events at the museum at least ne week prir t the event in rder t schedule a qualified vet t be n the premises t cnduct test. All vet expenses will be the respnsibility f the animal s wner. Members f the public are nt allwed n r t ride any cavalryman s munt during the event. All hrses must be securely picketed and nt left unattended during the event. Picket line watches may be detailed during the hurs f darkness and at any ther time the cavalry cmmander deems it necessary fr the physical safety f the cavalry units r event spectatrs. All hrses will be picketed in the designated cavalry camp with the exceptin f staff hrses designated by the cmmand adjutant. N hrse will be allwed t be picketed in any vehicle parking area at any time (with the exceptin f the area behind the maintenance barn). During public hurs, mvement f hrsemen shuld be dne in unit size frmatins unless part f a scheduled activity. These frmatins are encuraged during public hurs bth as a warm-up prir t the main battle and as added entertainment fr museum visitrs. Any scheduled demnstratin(s) will be dne in a prescribed lcatin at the museum. All hrses will be dismunted prir t entering any authrized camp area and led int the designated picket area. With the exceptin f a designated cmbat area, abslutely n munted individual will allw a hrse t enter a camp area abve the gait f a cntrlled walk. Inexperienced riders and green hrses will be identified t the cavalry cmmander by the unit senir member present prir t participating in any aspect f the event. N persn under the age f 16 will munt a hrse as a cmbatant r serve in a munted capacity. Physical abuse f hrses as specified by New Yrk state laws prevailing at the event will be grunds fr immediate expulsin frm the event. As a thank yu frm the museum, the munted cavalry units will be reimbursed $50 fr each hrse, in additin t being prvided filled water trughs and hay.
DURING BATTLE Unruly r uncntrllable hrses will be rdered t leave the battlefield. Cavalry shuld advance as rganized units. Individual hrsemen shuld nt be n the field, except as staff r unit curiers, r as part f an rganized unit. All trps will be respnsible t a unit fficer. At n time will cavalry units be allwed t verride infantry r artillery lines. Cavalry shuld maintain at least a 15-ft interval between infantry and artillery trps, being especially careful f thse simulating casualties. All activity will be restricted t a walk r trt whenever wrking in areas where there are casualties n the grund. REVOLVERS: Only fficers, cavalry and artillery re-enactrs may carry revlvers. All revlvers MUST remain unladed except fr Munted Cavalry. Cavalry may fire revlvers while munted. Otherwise revlvers may nt be fired. Any clse rder cmbat between cavalry r between cavalry and infantry/artillery must be crdinated with the ppsing unit cmmanders prir t the battle and bserved by a museum fficial. Only individuals participating in the prearranged activity will be allwed in the scenari during the battle. Please respect the 15-ft rule stated abve. In clse cntact between cavalry units, firing directly at each ther will nt be allwed while the units are engaged. Munted trps must be at all times aware f the lcatin f the spectatrs. D nt ride within ten yards f the spectatr line. MILITARY AUTHENTICITY GUIDELINES FOOTWEAR: Perid ftwear such as brgans is preferred. Black bts with rawhide laces are acceptable fr children under 16. Wrk bts, cwby bts, mccasins and bare feet are nt acceptable at any age. UNIFORM: UNION: Light r dark blue wl pants, dark blue wl, sack, shell r frck cat. Zuaves and Berdans are accepted. CONFEDERATE: Perid unifrm fr prper unit depictin. HAT: Frage cap, kepi r sluch hat. Hardee hat is acceptable fr dress r if yur unit wre the Hardee in the Field (Federal). N straw hats in the Federal ranks. ACCOUTREMENTS: Usual leather gear: Cartridge bx with tins and apprpriate plate, cap bx, leather belt with apprpriate plate, baynet and scabbard, smth side r bulls eye canteen, black tarred r muslin haversack. EYEWEAR: N mdern eyewear is t be wrn during the event; cntact lenses are acceptable. CAMP-EQUIPMENT: Authentic gear fr bth garrisn and campaign style camping.
