The breeding potential for lamb growth rates from birth to 8 weeks of age. Choosing animals with high figures for this trait will increase mature size. Selection on high EBVs will increase the prolificacy of female replacements. This is the maternal component of the 8-week measurement.the higher this figure the better a ram s ewe lambs will perform as mothers (i.e.milking ability). The breeding potential for lamb growth rates to 21 weeks (age at scanning). The selection of breeding stock with high scan weight EBVs will result in animals with heavier carcases at a constant fat class or leaner carcases at a constant age. Choosing animals with high muscle depth EBVs will increase lamb muscularity and hence the lean meat content of the carcase. Negative values indicate animals with lower fat content which will produce leaner carcases or which can be taken to higher weights without becoming over-fat. Breeding value predicting yield of lean meat in the carcase (EBV only produced for breeds involved in CT scanning). Breeding value predicting yield of fat in the carcase (EBV only produced for breeds involved in CT scanning). Breeding value highlighting animals with superior breeding potential for gigot shape (EBV only produced for breeds involved in CT scanning). Breeding potential for worm resistance, a negative number being preferable (EBV only produced for breeds involved in FEC sampling). Highlights superior breeding stock for a specific breeding objective. 45

PERFORMANCE MULES Welcome to the Bluefaced Leicesters breeding and marketing initiative of Mules sired by performance recorded Bluefaced Leicesters in the top 50% of the breed. As we are aware there is an increasing demand for a scientific approach in many areas of agriculture and sheep farming is no different. Our aim is to provide the sheep industry with high performing, profitable ewes which benefit from the maximum amount of hybrid vigour. It has been proven that the benefits of hybrid vigour are at their highest when two breeds are used and that it decreases as more breeds are added to the mix. The crossing of the Bluefaced Leicester with any pure hill breed is a proven method of maximising the benefits of hybrid vigour, producing mules for professional farm managers and shepherds. We now want to work with Mule breeders to develop and identify Performance Mules. In 2014 Mule breeders will be able to market their female Mules as Performance Mules if they meet a few simple qualifying criteria. The Mule Societies in the UK have all been approached and in 2014 the Welsh Mule Society will be the first group of breeders to take up this initiative and offer Performance Mules at their association sales How to qualify as a Performance Mule Mule breeders will need to work with the Bluefaced Leicester Association and their Mule society to formally identify Mules sired by above average index Performance recorded Bluefaced Leicesters. 1) All Mules in any one pen must be sired by a Bluefaced Leicester with an index in the top 50% on the year of purchase, according to Signet performance recorded data. This data is also available on the BASCO website. 2) Each Mule breeder can contact the Bluefaced Leicester Association for a certificate which highlights the identity of the Qualifying Ram or rams used. These certificates can be displayed on the pens at the Mule sales. 3) All Performance Mules will be identified by the initials PM on their ear tags in a similar way as the Bluefaced Leicesters use the initial L. Please contact your tag supplier to produce appropriate tags for 2014 born Performance Mules. 4) In 2013 Bluefaced Leicesters with an index above 97 will be marked as Qualifying rams in the sale catalogues and this status remains with the ram for its lifetime. The Mule societies and Bluefaced Leicester Association will continue to work together as this initiative develops. Please contact the Association office should you require Certificates for your Qualifying rams. 56

Bluefaced Leicester Sheep Breeders Association 50th Year Scholarship In 2012 the association celebrated fifty years in the sheep industry and to commemorate this milestone in the history of the Association the decision was taken to set up a scholarship. The idea behind the scholarship is to continue the promotion of the Bluefaced Leicester well in to the next 50 years and to keep us in the fore front of the industry of which we are a vital part. The scholarship is open to agricultural students, farm workers and Bluefaced Leicester association members and their families aged between 18 30 years old at the time of application. A fund of up to a maximum of 5000 is available to the successful applicant with the aim of the scholarship being to produce evidence of research done to help develop the breed or produce new markets for the breed either in this country or abroad. The funds have been donated for the scholarship from the 2012 sale of elite genetics and from the Bluefaced Leicester publicity fund. The Bluefaced Leicester Sheep Breeders anticipate that the funds may be used for a research project linked to an agricultural course or research work at a place of employment or on your own family farm. The association would also be open to the possibility of a foreign field trip to study sheep industry strategies abroad and identify new markets for Bluefaced Leicesters. The successful applicant must be willing to supply copy of their research findings to the Bluefaced Leicester Sheep Breeders Association and be prepared to have their findings appear in articles and advertising once the scholarship is completed. Application forms are now available for members to apply for from the Association office, the closing date for interested parties to send their completed forms is 30th November, 2013. All completed applications must be accompanied by a signed declaration form. Received applications will be acknowledged and further information maybe required from the applicant, before the application is submitted to the selection panel for review.
