next level benson grabs spot on usa volleyball roster: Ashley Benson was selected as one of 24 players to participate in the 2009 U.S. Women s National A2 Program. Only six middle blockers qualified for the program, including Benson. After a five-day training session in May, the U.S. Women s National A2 program split into two 12-player rosters to compete in the Open Division of the 2009 USA Adult Open Championships from May 23-26 in Minneapolis. Benson and her team, USA Blue, won six of nine matches to earn a third-place finish in the Open Division. The competition was really good. There were girls that are six-foot-six in the middle blocker position who could touch 10 10... ridiculous. It was a lot of fun, but also a lot of work at the same time. It was a great opportunity to represent Indiana on a national stage. --Ashley Benson 22 www.iuhoosiers.com
next level short plays professionally in puerto rico: Erica Short wasted little time pursuing her dream of playing professional volleyball. Indiana s career leader in kills signed a contract with the Gigantes de Carolina, a pro team from Puerto Rico, in late January 2009. Once in the Caribbean, Short and the Gigantes finished the regular season in fourth place of the 10-team league with a record of 12-10. Short then led her team to the semifinals before falling to the top-seed in five matches of a best-of-seven series. Her stellar play in one of the quarterfinal contests earned her match MVP honors (right). Playing volleyball professionally has been a goal of mine for awhile. It was an opportunity I just couldn t pass up. I ve returned to Bloomington for the second semester of summer classes and I am on track to graduate in December with my degree in Therapeutic Recreation. After that, I plan to go play another season of professional volleyball. --Erica Short www.iuhoosiers.com 23
