I started hanging around Sport Central nearly three years ago. From my years knowing an old Edmonton sportscaster named Tiger Goldstick, and hearing his stories about driving around town with a trunk full of sports equipment, I knew what I was getting into. But then, slowly, I started to get it. Tiger always talked about how he d see a few kids hanging around up to no good and he d give them a football, or some ball gloves and a baseball. He never talked much about what happened next, or where the equipment actually came from. What I ve found in the short time I ve been with Sport Central, is that there is so much more to it than what Tiger used to talk about. There is the generosity of those who drop off equipment, and of course, the look on the faces of the children as they sit on the bench in our front lobby, getting Qitted for a pair of skates and a helmet and maybe a hockey stick. There s the look you get from Mom or Dad as they watch their kids interact with our volunteers. They re getting excellent gear that Qits properly. They can play now, or have a bike to ride. You should see how that makes a parent feel. There s John, who is in Grade 12 at Queen Elizabeth high school. He came to Canada from Liberia as a young child with his brothers and mother, and I m going to guess, not much else. Now, he s playing high school football, and trying to Qigure out how to become a success on his new continent, with the opportunity he and his family have found here. 2015 Winning Team In the mean time, he spends his Saturdays volunteering at Sport Central, an African- Canadian who has learned how to Qit hockey equipment better than someone who grew up in Spruce Grove.
