We are into the second week of February and there seems to be no end in sight to the constant rain and winds we have endured since November and unfortunately there has been very few pleasant days for you our members to enjoy much golf over the last few months. Our Course Revitalisation Project has been steaming ahead over the winter months and I would like to compliment Mark and his team for the work that has been completed to date. It has been a tough winter weather wise and the team have got great work done in difficult conditions. Some dates for your diary in the coming few weeks our Club AGM takes place at 7pm on Sunday 13 th March. Entries for the West of Ireland are now open for details go to www.golfnet.ie. The West of Ireland launch takes place in the Radisson Blu Hotel & Spa Sligo on Monday 14 th March at 6pm where the draw for the 2016 event will be available. All Members are welcome and we look forward to seeing you there. I would like to thank the Radisson Blu Hotel & Spa Sligo for their continued sponsorship. Captains Message David O Firstly, Donovan I wish a very happy and healthy 2016 to all our members, employees and families. A big thank you to everyone who made our drive in on General New Manager Year s Day so special; particularly our choir and their memorable rendition of Maybe it s because I m a Londoner. I am really looking forward to working with Lady Captain Carmel, our Presidents Tony and Madge and our Vice Captains Tom and Margaret. We have held our first Officers Meeting of the year and plan to meet every six weeks to map out our years activities. The West of Ireland Amateur Championship will be early this year as Easter falls the last week in March, we will be actively seeking volunteers to assist with the match reporting, stewarding and media coverage for this the first GUI amateur championship of the year. Finally we might just pause and wish any of our members or their family who may be in poor health a speedy recovery. Wishing you all good golf in 2016 Jeff Hatt

12 Hole Singles Stableford Saturday 6 February 2016 1st. Shane Underwood (1) 28 Pts 2nd. Sligo Golf club for over twenty years and have enjoyed every one of those years. I ve had the honour of captaining a number of teams and in the early years enjoyed caddying for senior cup teams. The choir is very important in our house as my wife Niamh is the musical director. In fact the choir is where we met, not many can say they joined a male voice choir and found a wife. I ve met a lot of really good people in the golf club and enjoy meeting new members all the time. This year I am junior convener and I am really looking forward to this role as I feel we have so much potential in our club. One of my favourite things to do after work, on a sunny summers evening, is to take my own family out for a few holes in Bomore and try and pass on whatever golf knowledge I may have acquired over the years, not that they ever listen and they re probably right. Q1. If a player's ball lies in a bunker completely covered by casual water, what are the options? Q2. A player drops his ball which landed on his marker and it flipped over. Did this incur a penalty or was he entitled to replace his ball marker on the original spot without penalty? Q3. Frank asked Matt to move his ball marker as it was on his line. Matt then forgot to return his marker to the original place before putting. Matt only recalled this on the next tee. Is there a penalty?

Winter League Review after Round 5 with 4 pairings to qualify in each section we are now at the final stages. Section 1, Favourites Cian Feeney and Joseph Keyes are faltering but should qualify, Old Boys Simon Rooney and Eoin Armstrong are leaders and will probably win this section. The remaining 2 qualifiers should be Wynne/O Hara and Hannigan/Gaynor. Section 2, New Leaders in this section are Mc Manus/Conway and are favourites to win this section. Noonan/Haran and Hallisey/Gilmartin should qualify and the last qualifier spot is very tight but I fancy Flanagan/Gannon to come through on the final day. Section 3, Leaders with full points are Keyes/Hodgeson and the Heelan Father and Son combination will qualify. Barnicale/Feeney should also qualify with last place up for grabs? Maguire/Ward have a chance? Section 4, Leaders with full points are Mc Manus/Feeney, Quinlan/Kearins lost the top of table clash this weekend but will qualify. O Sullivan/Buttler look good to qualify but the last spot is uncertain and it could be the younger pair Mc Hugh/Feely getting the better of the Old Boys Doyle/Rahilly? Section 5, Gallagher/Mac Donagh proved too good for Leaders O Flaherty/Mc Guinness this weekend but both pairs will qualify with Cullen/Mc Donagh. Murray/Johnston should join them in the final. Section 6, Demmel/Mc Donagh on full points are favourites for this section. Robinson/Heelan and Sproule/Reynolds should qualify, very difficult to forecast the next qualifier but the Old Guns Pugh/Mc Gee look favourites for last spot? Section 7, Past- winners O Brien/Barrett on full points will win this section. Stafford/Edwards have turned their performances about and will qualify. Dolan/Mahon and Cunningham/Leonard should get the final two places. Thank you to all competitors for the sporting manner you have played the matches and we continue on 21/2/2016. Favourites at this stage for the Ken Cunningham trophies are Barrett/O Brien and the Demmel/Mc Donagh partnership

Changes to the eligibility for the Irish Amateurs Open Changes to the eligibility and format for the Irish Amateur Close Changes to the age eligibility and structure of Mid Amateur golf Changes to the age eligibility for the Irish Seniors Close As part of a significant overhaul to the tournament conditions, a top-four finish at any one of Ireland s six majors will guarantee that player s place in the field for the next six. This will mean that a player who reaches the semi-final stage of the West of Ireland, North of Ireland, South of Ireland or Irish Amateur Close Championship, or who finishes in the top-four (including ties) in the East of Ireland or Irish Amateur Open Championship, will get an exemption into the next playing of all six Championships that close for entries following this performance. The winner of the Irish Youths, Leinster Youths, Munster Youths and Ulster Youths Championships will also receive an exemption along these lines for the six majors. In addition, starting with the Irish Amateur Open Championship in May, WAGR rankings will be used to help determine the make-up of the field in these Championships, in another move that will take some of the emphasis away from player handicaps when it comes to deciding the starting lists. Other significant changes to the rules of Union and Provincial Championships include a reduction in the age limit for Mid- Amateur Championships to 30, and a reduction in the age limit of the Irish Seniors Close Championship to 50. There are a number of significant format changes to events, including the provision of a playoff for all players tied for the last place in the match play draw of the Irish Amateur Close Championship, and for the draw for match play to be based entirely on stroke play scores. This change will also apply to the West of Ireland Championship at the end of March.

The choir was formed in November 1993 under Musical Director, Sheila Crowley and all the men are members of Co. Sligo Golf Club in Rosses Point, in The North West of Ireland. Since the retirement of Sheila Crowley, the choir is now under the musical direction of her daughter, Niamh Crowley, Violinist and Founder of The Sligo Academy of Music. The members are working hard and look forward to their next big concert, which will take place in The Radisson Blu Hotel in Sligo on Thursday, June 2 nd 2016 guest artistes will include The Army Band 2 Brigade.

Under the rules there is no penalty provided the movement of the ball or marker is directly attributable to the specific act of marking the position of, or lifting, your ball.
