UNCBears.com University of Northern Colorado Bears (3-2) at The UTEP Invitational hosted by Texas-El Paso Round-Robin Tournament Thursday-Sunday, Feb. 23-26 All Day El Paso, Texas Helen of Troy Softball Complex (607) TOURNAMENT INFORMATION The University of Northern Colorado Bears softball squad will play six games in four days against five different teams as part of the UTEP Invitational. The tournament, hosted by UTEP in El Paso, Texas, is comprised of six teams, including Northern Colorado, UTEP, Utah, New Mexico, New Mexico State and San Jose State. THE BEAR FACTS The Bears went 3-2 in season-opening action at the Lion Classic in Hammond, La., Feb. 10-12. Northern Colorado began the weekend with a 9-5 win over Jackson State on Feb. 10. Junior Casey Hogue paced the Bears, going 2-for-4 with 2 RBI in the game. Junior Shea Carpenter made her debut for the Bears, going 5.1 innings and retiring 22 of the 26 batters she faced to pick up the win. Jessica Milligan also made her debut for the Bears in 1.2 innings of relief. Milligan struck out five of the six hitters she faced. In the second game against Southeastern Lousiana, Northern Colorado lost a close 8-7 ball game. Junior Astrid Yestness went 2-for-4 in the game, while Hogue drove in two runs. The Bears rebounded from the loss and won their last two games of the day. Mackenzie Barrett led the Bears by going 2-for-4 from the plate with three RBI in Northern Colorado s 10-2 win in five innings over Alcorn State. Ashley Martinosky went 2-for-3 with two RBI. Milligan pitched five innings, struck out six and allowed just one earned run. Northern Colorado had a tougher time against Southern, as it took the Bears eight innings to tally the 5-3 win over the Jaguars. Barrett drove in two runs and went 2-for-4 in the game. Carpenter improved her record to 2-0 after pitching an eight inning complete game and allowing just one earned run. Northern Colorado capped off last season with two straight wins over UTEP in Greeley. The first win was head coach Linda Witt s 75th career win. Northern Colorado went 1-1 against New Mexico State last season. The Bears are 1-1 all-time against New Mexico, with the last meeting in 2004.Northern Colorado has never faced Utah or San Jose State. ROAD WARRIORS The Bears have just two home regular season games this season. They will host the Division II Regis Rangers on April 18 at Butler-Hancock Softball Field in a doubleheader. The only other time Northern Colorado will be at home is April 28-29, when the Bears host the Division I Independent Tournament. Northern Colorado will play a total of 41 games on the road.
