CAMPUS RECREATION Assumption College Campus Recreation Monthly Newsletter December 2017 Monthly Notes As our semester draws to a close and finals begin we here in Campus Recreation want to thank all of you for participating in all of the events and leagues and tournaments that we offered this semester. The most talked about event this past fall was the Nu Café Free Smoothie Day and we have heard your cries for more and they will be back on Study Day! Speaking of Study Day Campus Recreation is excited to announce that we are partnering with PAWS to bring DeStress Fest to the Plourde on December 7th. Check out the promotion for it in this Newsletter and on Social Media. We will have Nu Cafe, Massages, Yoga, Baby Farm animals and much, much more! Also in this month s Newsletter is the information for the return of HoundHustle for next semester, information for the Fitness class offerings for nest semester and the announcement of the upcoming 25th Anniversary Celebration of the opening of the Plourde! I love seeing my Plourde family daily. Every person I walk by says "Hey how ya doin'" in a caring matter. Phenomenal vibes from this place. - Dave Maljanian 19 We here in Campus Recreation thank you for spending your free time with us this past fall and we wish you all the best of luck on your upcoming finals. Women s Club Volleyball By Hannah Deegan The Women s Club Volleyball Team has been hard at work this semester! With the help of our new volunteer coach, Kristian Roman, we ve been able to compete quite well. He challenges all of us every day in practice and helps us work together as a team on the court. We re so grateful Kristian has been able dedicate so much time to our team; he brings a lot of leadership and skill to the table. In October, we participated in our league opening tournament in Windsor, CT hosted by UCONN. Being one of twenty teams, we competed against Yale, Rutgers, Boston College, and UMASS Amherst. In preparation for our final tournament, we traveled down the street to WPI and spent a few hours in their facility scrimmaging. In November, we were happy to host our FIRST EVER home tournament here at Assumption. We hosted seven other teams including Central Connecticut, University of Vermont, Tufts, Providence, Holy Cross, Colgate College, and Renssalaer Polytech. It was a very competitive day with many close matches, but in the end, Providence placed 1 st followed by the University of Vermont. We look forward to having a busy spring semester! Men s Club Volleyball By: Tim Cody The Assumption College Men s Club Volleyball Team provides an entertaining and competitive opportunity for men to play volleyball. This is a club for those who have played in the past, or for those who have never played before. Captains Brandon Rose and Tim Cody have been playing for a number of years, and they with the help of other experienced players spend countless hours teaching the basics of the sport to new players. The team meets twice a week in Plourde Field House to prepare for their season in the spring semester. This semester the team played two preseason tournaments at the University of New Haven, playing against schools in the division from all over New England. Teams that were in attendance were UConn (A & B Teams), WPI, University of New Haven, Marian, and a few more. In the past, the Club Sport has had the privilege of hosting tournaments here at the school, and hope to do so again in the future. They also were able to work at the Girls Varsity Team the past couple years. Many of the players would attest that volleyball is a good way to take a break from the regular stresses of everyday college life and to play a sport that they love. Whether they need to blow off steam, prepare for a tournament, or just simply have fun, the Men s Club Volleyball Team has had a successful year so far and cannot wait to continue their season! Intramural Corner After the success of Co-Ed Ping Pong last year we decide to run it once again. Throughout the 2 nd half of the semester at any time you could see 1 of our 8 participants competing in the Racquetball Courts. Each participant was given 7 regular season games then an opportunity to be in the playoffs. The #1 and #2 seeds ended up meeting in the Finals. Sarah Kiss My Ace Reilly defeated Hayden Manchesterhair United Butler 3-0 to avenge last year s 2 nd Place finish and claim the Fall Intramural Ping Pong Championship! Be on the lookout for our Department to run another season in the Spring semester! Court #1 in the Plourde Field House is finally getting some action in the form of Intramural Floor Hockey. We offered a Men s and Women s Division with a combined 7 teams participating. GLAX Fhocks with a contingent of Varsity Women s Lacrosse players finished the regular season 6-0 and is the #1 seed heading into the Playoffs! In the Men s Division Big Sexy s Bunch finished the regular season 7-2-3 and shits atop the standings. Both Championship will take place during the final weeks of classes, so be on the lookout in the January Newsletter for our Champions! Court #3 also got in on the action with Indoor Soccer. We had a total of 11 teams between both the Men s and Women s Division to play some futbol. In the Women s Division the OG Goal Diggers finished the regular season unscathed at 6-0 with an impressive +47 goal differential. The Men s Division was much of the same as the defending Champion Arthur s Children ended the regular season at 7-0-1 with an amazing +58 goal differential and the top seed in the Playoffs. Both Championship will take place during the final weeks of classes, so be on the lookout in the January Newsletter for our Champions! On Friday night, November 10 th our Department offered some weekend programming in the form of a Co-Ed Soccer Billiards Tournament. This inaugural Tournament showcased the combination of soccer and billiards skills of 6 different teams. The night was filled with pizza, raffles, and a little bit of trash talk among the teams. Pjanic! At the Disco came out on top and was crowned our 1 st ever Champion by beating 50 Cents A Day on a scratch on the 8-ball! On Sunday, December 3 rd @5:30PM our Annual Men s and Women s 3v3 Basketball Tournament will be taking place in the Field House. Teams will compete in a double-elimination Tournament in hopes of taking home a new Championship Tank Top for Winter Break! Sign-ups are still open on IMLeagues, so grab a couple friends to ball up! Our Department values our students feelings and opinions on how our Intramural program is doing. We sent out an Intramural Satisfaction Survey to all our 1 st half participants gauging their responses on such things as game times, referee performances, and sportsmanship. Adi Nathan and Madeline Iassogna were rewarded with a Campus Recreation Gift Basket for taking the time to fill out the survey. A 2 nd half survey will open up on December 4 th, so do not be afraid to take 5 minutes to let us know how you feel about Intramurals here at Assumption! On the last night of November coming out of Intramural retirement was our old offering of Co-Ed Wallyball. What is Wallyball you ask, well it s essentially volleyball in a racquetball court but the players are allowed to utilize the walls to get it over the net. This Tournament saw 7 teams partake, including Working Overtime which was a squad made up of Assumption Staff Members. In the end the VBALL Friends took home their 2nd Championship of the semester besting the Cleveland Pants 21-19 in the final. Check back in the Spring semester for another Wallyball Tournament to be offered!
