The 2018 MUNSEE DISTRICT KLONDIKE CHALLENGE POSSIBLE KLONDIKE STATIONS Here is a list of skills which the Klondike Challenge Committee is considering for this coming year. We always change several Scout skills around each year to keep things interesting and more challenging! The theme for this year's Klondike Challenge is "Back to the Basics." Use this list in conjunction with the Senior Patrol Leader's form to make an intelligent choice when filling out the S.P.L.'s form. 1. Archery: (Used 2015) Patrol Props Required: None! Possible Scenario: Each member of the Patrol will shoot as many arrows at the target as possible within a 20 min. time limit. Points will only be scored for targets that were hit. Highest possible score of 10 points. Time limit: 20 minutes. 2. Astronomy: Patrol Equipment Required: None! Number of Scouts participating: Entire Patrol (8 or less) Possible Scenario: Patrols will be provided with a sky map and asked to identify constellations and prominent stars in the night sky for both the northern and southern sky. Time limit: 20 minutes. 3. Breakfast for the Mayor: (New) Patrol Props Required: At least 1 Firem'N Chit card, back packing stove (fuel canister type), frying pan cake mix, and paper plate and cooking utensils. Number of Scouts Participating: Entire Patrol. (8 or less) Possible Scenario: Each Patrol will need to build a fire and cook a pancake, flip it and offer it to the Mayor. The Mayor, who will check it for taste and quality. Who brought the maple syrup and butter? Firem M Chit card is mandatory at this fire station! Time limit: 20 minutes. 4. Camp Gadget or Structure: (New) Patrol Props Required: Ropes for lashings and wooden poles. Number of Scouts Participating: Entire Patrol (8 or less) Possible Scenario: Each Patrol will be asked to use the correct lashing and wooden poles to make a useful camp gadget or a structure that the Patrol s chooses. The more complicated the camp gadget or structure is and different lashings used, will earn your Patrol more points. Time limit: 20 minutes.
5. Cold Weather First Aid: (Used 2012, 2016) Patrol Props Required: Knowledge of cold weather first aid and general first aid. Any props you feel you would need to compete this station. Number of Scouts participating: Entire Patrol of 8 or less. Possible Scenario: The Patrol works together to perform first aid on the injured hiker. Time limit: 20 minutes. 6. Compass Course: Patrol Props Required: 1 compass for every 3 Scouts and know your paces Possible Scenario: Each Patrol will be required to navigate to a series of 12 markers to the finish line. Time limit: 20 minutes. 7. Compass & Measuring: (Used 2000 & 2007) Patrol Props Required: None! Possible Scenario: Patrols will be required to measure height, width, and give the distance, and must be able to point out North, South, West, and East without using a compass. Time limit: 20 minutes. 8. Fire Lay Challenge: (New) Patrol Props Required: At least 1 Firem'N Chit card, 1 hot spark or metal match, battery and steel wool, and 1 empty lighter that sparks. Water, safety glasses, small shovel, firewood, tinder, and kindling (No liquid fuel, chemical treated materials and no fatwood). Possible Scenario: Patrols will be asked to make three different fires lays and light them using three different ignitions, Log cabin, Lean-to, Tepee. Firem M Chit cards is mandatory at this fire station! Time limit: 20 minutes. 9. Ice Coffee Rescue: (New) Patrol Props Required: (4) 06 ropes for each member of the Patrol. Number of Scouts participating: Entire patrol! (8 or less) Possible Scenario: Each member of the Patrol will use the ropes that they supply and an S hook that the Town will supply to retrieve a coffee can out of the rescue area to a designated safe area. Time limit: 20 minutes.
10. Ladder and Lashings: (New) Patrol Equipment Required: Two 6 ft. wooden poles, six 2 ft. wooden poles for rungs. Ropes for lashings, 1 per Scout. Possible Scenario: Each Patrol will lash together a ladder that must be strong enough for the Assistant Mayor to climb and the correct knots must be used. The rungs must be one foot apart. Time limit: 20 minutes. 11. Minute to Win It: (New) Patrol Props Required: None! Possible Scenario: Each Patrol will be given a series of Scout related, as well as general knowledge questions. Each question answered correctly will earn the Patrol points. Time limit: 20 minutes. 12. Paintball: (Used 2014, 2015) Patrol Props Required: Safety glasses Possible Scenario: Each member of the Patrol will shoot as many paintballs at the target as possible within the 20 min. time. However only a total of 10 points that hit the bull's-eye will count. Time limit: 20 minutes. 13. Radioactive Pickup: Patrol Equipment Required: 1-12 foot long 3/8" diameter piece of rope per Scout. 2inch wide rubber band cut from old inner tube. 1-number 10 can. Number of Scouts Participating: Entire patrol! (8 or less) Possible Scenario: Transport as many radioactive container to a safe disposal site without spilling it or touching it within the 20 minutes time limit. 14. Splint and Transport: Patrol Props Required: Splints, Triangular Bandages and Patrol sled. Possible Scenario: Patrol required to care for a casualty with a broken leg; after splinting, place the casualty correctly on sled for transport. Time limit: 20 minutes. 15. Tracking: Patrol Props Required: Just a pen or pencil and your knowledge of animal tracks. Possible Scenario: Scouts will be asked to identify the animal tracks. Time limit: 20 minutes.
16. Tree identification: Patrol Props Required: Knowledge of trees and how to identification them in winter! Possible Scenario: Patrol will be asked to identify trees. Time limit: 20 minutes. (Last up dated 03/25/17)
