Continue straight off the exit ramp onto Morrissey Boulevard for approximately one mile. Turn right into the campus and follow the driveway to the parking areas. From the North Interstate 93 South (Southeast Expressway) to exit 15, Columbia Road/JFK Library/UMass. Turn left at the end of the exit ramp and proceed towards the rotary. 2010 COACHING STAFF RICK PETERSON Head Coach Babson 1983 Second Season TYLER LOW Assistant Coach Babson 2009 First Season Rick Peterson became the seventh Head Men s Lacrosse Coach in UMass Boston history last year and returns for his second season with the Beacons. The Massachusetts native has been very successful in the coaching arena, having led Marshfield High School to a combined 31-10 record in the 2007 and 2008 campaigns, including a Division 1 semifinals appearance in 2007. Peterson wasted no time in making a name for himself, leading the Rams to a 15-4 record and was selected as the Atlantic Coast League s Coach of the Year in 2007. Prior to his appointment as Marshfield s Head Coach, he established the Freshman Program in 2005 and led the squad to a 21-1 mark, before directing the Junior Varsity team to a 19-1 record the next season. Peterson has been extremely active in the Massachusetts lacrosse community, having been the Head Coach of the Eastern Massachusetts Junior Minutemen in the U-19 league and leading the Massachusetts AAU unit to a Silver Medal in the AAU Junior Olympics in 2006. Tyler Low joins the UMass Boston coaching staff after enjoying a solid four-year career at Babson College, where he played 36 games as a defender for the Beavers. The native of Natick, MA was selected a Captain for Babson for his senior campaign, where he established career highs for games played (16) and ground balls (28). Prior to his collegiate career, Low starred as a goalie at Noble and Greenough School in Dedham, MA. A 2009 graduate from Babson, he has gone on to co-found and co-own PrimeTimeLacrosse.com. The company sponsors camps, leagues and clinics as well as select teams. Before making his mark on the coaching scene, Peterson was a four-year standout at Babson College and graduated from the school in 1983 with a bachelor of science degree in business administration, marketing and communications. Throughout his career, he has been actively involved in building teams and leading successful organizations. Peterson currently resides in Scituate, MA with his wife Susan and daughter Lindsay. 2 2010 UMass Boston Men s Lacrosse
2010 OUTLOOK 2010 UMass Boston went through some growing pains last season as the program looks to return to prominence within the region. The Beacons appear to be on the right track in 2010 and will feature a stingy defense that will rival any other unit in the conference. UMass Boston s defensive front is long on experience and primed to shut down opposing offensive threats. Senior defender Patrick McDonagh (Dorchester, MA) has come a long way in a very short time, establishing himself as the Beacons best defender as well as one of the best in the Little East Conference. He doubled his ground ball output a year ago with 36 and is one of the most imposing figures on the field at 6 4 and 210 pounds. The senior s understanding of the game, combined with his athleticism should elevate him as the leader of the defense. Classmate Jared Doherty (Conway, NH) also returns and was named a Captain for the second straight season. He scooped up 21 ground balls last year and is a versatile player, who will help to anchor the defense. Senior Tim Boyle (Dorchester, MA) returns for his fourth campaign with UMass Boston and will see action as a defender and as a long stick midfielder. He s very aggressive and a consistent player, who has gotten better each season, as evidenced by career highs in ground balls and points last year. Newcomers John Sullivan (Dorchester, MA) and Carmine Avena (Hamilton, NJ) both earned spots on the squad as walkons and should both contribute. Sullivan is a senior, who will see action as defensive middie and on the defense, while Avena is a strong player with a good shot, who will also vie for time as a defensive midfielder in his freshman season. The Beacons midfield will have a new look to it this season with a number of newcomers as well as a key player making the move from attack to midfield. Junior John Canty (Milton, MA) has been the team s top offensive threat the past two seasons, but will move to the midfield to help make the offense more dynamic. He tied for the team lead with 33 points, including a team-high 22 goals. Although Canty has excelled as UMass Boston s top scorer, he was also very effective in possessing the ball with a team-best 67 ground balls and served as the squad s main face-off man. with a 41.2% (56-136) success rate. He s one of the team s most skilled players and will be a dangerous offensive threat. Senior Al Craven (Milton, MA) will also be a main contributor on offense. Senior Al Craven was named a Tri-Captain and should be a main contributor in the midfi eld He responded in his first year with the Beacons by netting a careerhigh 21 goals as part of a 29-point showing. He was named a Tri-Captain for his leadership skills on and off the field and is one of the strongest athletes on the team. Sophomore Pat Driscoll (Hingham, MA) is a newcomer with plenty of experience after spending a year with the Coast Guard Academy s club team. He is very good at both ends of the field and was named an All-Star for Coast Guard in the Pioneer Collegiate Lacrosse League last season. He will see time on the team s first midfield line and also share faceoff duties. Freshman Ian Ferrari (Mashpee, MA) will see action in the defensive midfield for UMass Boston and has excellent speed and should be an asset in the team s ability to clear the ball, while sophomore Eric Collins (Somerville, MA) worked extremely hard in the offseason to improve his game and should serve as the team s primary long stick midfielder. He picked up 23 ground balls and chipped in with six points a year ago and is in much better condition going into the 2010 campaign. Senior Ryan Pollock (Chandler, AZ) returns for his second year and will add depth to the defensive midfield. He s very coachable and has a great attitude. The Beacons will rely on a pair of veterans to lead their attack, but welcome a newcomer, who should also contribute. Senior Dale Nunn (Hillsborough, NJ) has been a solid scorer for UMass Boston, notching double-digit goal totals in each of the past two seasons and collected a career-high 17 points in 2009. He has excellent stick skills with both hands and owns the best lacrosse IQ on the attack. Classmate Aaron Pollock (Belmont, MA) will start on the attack for the second straight year and also serve as a Captain for the second year in a row. He netted a careerhigh 14 goals and added four assists last year and should be one of the team s top scorers. Freshman Ryan Cassidy (Northbridge, MA) will start at right side attack after a high school career that saw him serve as Northbridge High School s Captain. He should improve as he makes the transition to the college game. The Beacons will have the luxury of having two quality goaltenders at their disposal. One a returner with valuable collegiate experience, the other a newcomer with excellent skills. Sophomore Anthony Fitti (Havertown, PA) started 10 games in net for UMass Boston last year and posted a 12.74 goals against average in 570 minutes of action. He ranked second in the league with 13.00 saves per game and owned a.518 save percentage with 130 stops on the year. Freshman Jake Gostanian (Andover, MA) comes from a strong lacrosse background and will make a serious run for the starting goalie position right out of the gate. 2010 UMass Boston Men s Lacrosse 3

THE LITTLE EAST CONFERENCE 2010 The Little East Conference officially began on April 28, 1986 as a playing conference for men s and women s basketball among six New England institutions: Eastern Connecticut State University, Plymouth State College, Rhode Island College, University of Massachusetts Dartmouth (formerly Southeastern Massachusetts University), the University of Massachusetts Boston and the University of Southern Maine. From the beginning the conference was officially recognized by the NCAA. The number of sports contested in the conference has grown to include men s and women s soccer, baseball, men s and women s cross country, men s and women s indoor track, men s and women s outdoor track, men s and women s lacrosse, softball, men s and women s tennis, volleyball and field hockey, as well as the original men s and women s basketball. The number of participating institutions rose to seven with the addition of Western Connecticut State University in 1993-94 and then to eight for the 1997-98 year as Keene State College joined. Along with planning for the inclusion of new sports within the conference, the LEC s cross country, indoor and outdoor track and field programs are participating in an innovative joint program with the MASCAC conference to determine New England Alliance championships. Events contested are scored within each conference and for the Alliance as well. The LEC recognizes the advantages of combining with other conferences which allows teams with lower numbers of participants to join forces and compete at a full-team level. UMB LACROSSE ACHIEVEMENTS 2010 UMASS BOSTON LACROSSE HIGHLIGHTS 1982 Attackman Chris Harvey is named All-America by the USILA and becomes the fi rst UMB player to participate in the North-South national all-star game. The Beacons win the Colonial Division championship with an 8-0 record and advance to the semifi nals of the ECAC tournament. 1993 Midfi elder David Taylor becomes the second UMass Boston player to participate in the USILA North-South national all-star game. 1994 Attackman Jamie Mulroney sets New England career records with 211 goals and 350 points and is selected for the USILA North-South national all-star game. Mulroney and defenseman Dan Chouinard are named to the NEILA All-New England team. 1996 The Beacons fi nish the season having allowed the fewest goals of any team in the nation and at 12-1, have the fi fth-best record in the country. THIS IS UMASS BOSTON 2010 The University of Massachusetts Boston was established in 1964 to provide the opportunity for superior education at moderate cost to the people of greater Boston. Starting out in a downtown Boston location, the university moved to its current 175-acre campus on the Columbia Point peninsula in 1974 and merged with Boston State College in 1982. Before taking over at UMB, Ed worked with the nationally ranked men s basketball team at Temple University before returning to Division III athletics at MIT and at Bridgewater State College. Shannon Soares, a certified athletic trainer in her own right, is the university s assistant athletic trainer. Shannon s credentials include a stint with Dennis-Yarmouth High School as its head athletic trainer and two summers working with top major league baseball prospects in the prestigious Cape Cod League. What that means to you is that when you become a member of the Beacons, you are in the safest environment possible. Whether it be injury prevention, evaluation, treatment, or rehabilitation, the training staff at UMass Boston is looking out for you. Before you are eligible for competition, you will be required to undergo a thorough physical examination. You will be monitored throughout the training phase and competitive season. And the training staff works closely with your head coach to make your participation in Beacon athletics as safe as it can be. To ensure quality individual care, the training staff regularly acquires the latest and most effective modalities. The sports medicine center at UMass Boston is equipped with a four-channel electrical stimulation with combination ultrasound unit, a paraffin bath, two hydrocollator units, a Jobst compression unit and a whirlpool bath. Strength & Conditioning The University of Massachusetts Boston is one of the few NCAA III schools in the country to offer a year round strength and conditioning program. The varsity weight room is designed to improve all areas of athletic performance for all sports. The strength and conditioning coach is a certified professional. The focus is to educate and train athletes on how to properly execute exercises that will allow them to be more efficient with the sports specific movements and enable them to participate with a reduced chance of injury. CLARK ATHLETIC CENTER 2010 The student athlete at UMass Boston has a wealth of athletic and recreational facilities available within the confines of the Clark Athletic Center. The athletic center has served as the home of the Beacon basketball program since its completion in 1981. Named for Catherine Forbes Clark, a former trustee of the University of Massachusetts system and prominent Dorchester civic leader, the Clark Athletic Center emulates its namesake by serving the University community as well as area residents throughout the year. Considered one of the finest athletic and recreational facilities in Greater Boston, the complex accommodates the school s 18 intercollegiate sports and extensive intramural program. The Center s building houses a main gymnasium, which includes a 3,500-seat basketball arena along with three auxiliary basketball courts and two volleyball courts, a 1,000- seat ice rink, and an Olympic-size swimming pool with a high-dive area, six 25-yard lanes and an observation deck. A weight room, creative and combative rooms and a sports medicine area round out the interior of the structure. Outside the building, UMass Boston boasts an eight-lane 400-meter track, eight tennis courts, a softball diamond and two multipurpose fields primarily used for soccer and lacrosse. The outdoor facilities also include a boathouse and dock for the sailing program as well as several recreational fields. Boston Youth Games, the Boston Housing Authority Jamboree, the Bay State Games and MIAA state tournament games in soccer, ice hockey and basketball. The athletic center became the new home of the Boston Shootout, the premier high school basketball tournament in the nation, in 1997 and has served as a workout facility for the Boston Celtics and the 2000 McDonald s All- American High School Basketball team, while also serving as the site of the Sprite Slam Jam. During the summer of 1999, the center began hosting the Shaw s Summer Pro League, featuring current and future stars of the NBA. The center also hosts the Indiana Pacers and San Antonio Spurs during the NBA season, serving as a practice site for both of those teams on their visits to Boston. The Clark Athletic Center saw its most excitement for 2000 in just one night when on October 3rd, the University hosted the first United States Presidential Debate of 2000. When the parties finally agreed to the Boston debate, the event was suddenly only two weeks away. In that time frame the Clark Athletic Center had to be converted into a debate hall and the adjacent hockey rink into a media center, replete with red carpet, approximately 700 phones, more than 70 televisions, and accommodations for almost 1,600 media representatives from around the world. The complex has also doubled as a concert venue, hosting multiple-grammy winning artist Kanye West in 2006 as well as the O Jays and Common in 2007. UMass Boston also boasts one of the finest personal fitness facilities in the area in the Beacon Fitness Center. The state-of-the-art recreational area provides students, faculty and staff with modern equipment in a clean environment. The fitness center offers cardiovascular machines, nautilus and free weights, squash and racquetball courts, a walking track and aerobics. In addition to extensive use by the intercollegiate and intramural programs, the Clark Athletic Center serves as the site for numerous community activities. Included in the list of community activities are a variety of events for both youth and the physically challenged. 2010 UMB IN THE COMMUNITY Intercollegiate athletics, intramurals and recreation for students, staff and faculty are the primary programs of the UMass Boston Department of Athletics. The department offers 18 varsity sports and is a member of the NCAA s Division III. UMass Boston has teams competing in the ECAC, the Little East Conference and ECAC East Ice Hockey. Ninetythree Beacons in seven sports have been named All-Americans. The women s indoor and outdoor track and field teams had an outstanding record of achievement, including four NCAA Team Championships and 37 individual NCAA Championships. But the Department of Athletics has another important concern as well--service to the community. Whether it s complimentary use of the University s athletic facilities, coaches and student athletes sports clinics for youth groups, or holiday visits to area hospitals, UMass Boston Athletics is in the forefront of serving area neighborhoods and communities throughout the state. More than 150 school, charitable, government and private organizations use UMass Boston athletic facilities each year at little or no cost. Over 2,500 people visit our athletic facilities each year, as participants or spectators. UMass Boston s indoor and outdoor athletic facilities are in use by visitors for over 2100 hours each year. In 2007 the National Consortium for Academics and Sports named the Department of Athletics at UMass Boston as # 1 in the country among Division III institutions and seventh overall for Community Service. UMass Boston was named Honorable Mention by the National Association of Division III Athletics Administrators/Jostens in the category of An Array of Projects or Activities in 2005. UMass Boston is in a unique position as the only public university in the City of Boston. For that reason, the University has a responsibility above and beyond its mission to provide a superior higher education at moderate cost to the people of the metropolitan area. Because of its urban environment and its spacious, coastline location, the University can reach out to its neighbors and provide first rate facilities for healthy, stimulating sports and recreational activities. National Consortium for Academics and Sports member institutions develop Outreach and Community Service programs with current student-athletes and former student-athletes from the Degree Completion Program. Over the last 23 years, NCAS member institutions, through their outreach and community service programs, have reached more than 17.6 million youth nationwide with messages about violence prevention, gender sensitivity, conflict resolution, the importance of academics and athletics, staying in school, the dangers of drugs and alcohol, and much more. Since 1985, NCAS student-athletes have given over 19 million hours of community service. There is no one way to conduct school outreach programs. It is clear from the great work done by NCAS members that there are many ways to provide quality programs. Beacon Dash Cross Country teams sponsor and run the event with proceeds going to the Early Learning Center Bring Your Child to Work Day Womens basketball ran a clinic for 30 kids along with arts and crafts
OPPORTUNITIES FOR ATHLETES 2010 As a student athlete at UMass Boston you will have unique opportunities to represent the University on a national level and in national programs. NCAA CHAMPS/LIFE SKILLS The 2000-01 school year marked the department s first year as a member of the NCAA s CHAMPS/Life Skills program. Presently, 323 institutions and six conference offices now participate in this NCAA supported life skills program. The NCAA mission of CHAMPS/Life Skills is committed to a comprehensive program that provides educational experience and services in order to develop well balanced lifestyles for student-athletes; to encourage growth in decision making, planning and fulfillment of career and life goals. The CHAMPS/Life Skills program will be presented this year at UMB through the development of workshops/guest speakers that address identified life skill needs in the five commitment areas of this program. As part of our membership in CHAMPS/Life Skills, each year one of four student athlete nominees will attend the NCAA Foundation Leadership Conference. STUDENT ATHLETE ADVISORY COUNCIL The Student Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC) is comprised of student athlete representatives from each of UMass Boston s teams. The purpose of the organization is to promote all UMB sports and provide student athletes an opportunity to impact those issues that affect their daily lives. SAAC is the student athlete s voice and their vehicle to implement new ideas and influence positive change to enhance the studentathlete experience at UMass Boston. Members of each team will nominate and select an eligible student athlete to represent their sport on the SAAC. An alternate will also be selected, in the event that the designated representative cannot attend a meeting. It is expected that each team will be represented at every scheduled meeting/event. Throughout the year, student athletes are encouraged to communicate ideas and concerns to the respective representative of their sport. COLLEGE DEGREE PROGRAMS 2010 Five Colleges to Choose From When you apply, you ll be seeking admission to one of five UMass Boston college that conduct degree programs for undergraduates. The colleges are briefly described here. Your choice of a college means that you ll be expected to complete a major offered by your college, but it doesn t limit you to courses within your college.
