MESSAGE FROM THE COMMANDING OFFICER, DEVONSHIRE AREA Greetings all, With the Holiday Season upon us, we see more people driving on the roads completing errands, shopping, and celebrating. As a result, we see more accidents and road rage incidents that could be prevented. I would like to remind our Devonshire Community of the following safety tips: Slow down! Do not drink and drive! If you are caught driving while intoxicated, you could face jail time and steep court fines, not to mention damage to your driving record. Keep your cool; don t get engaged. Be mindful of other people on the road or the passengers you may be carrying. Please plan for a sober designated driver, taxi, or ride share service. September and October were very busy months for Devonshire Area. In September, we had our 2 nd Annual Devonshire SOLID Golf Tournament in Porter Ranch. It was a fantastic success coordinated by Officers Don Majors, Lupe Mijares and our Devonshire SOLID members. In October, Devonshire had its 1 st Annual Cigar Night at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Hall. Thanks to all who attended and helped make this a successful event. Thank you Sgt. Larry Bavaro for the great cigar choices. Councilman Mitch Englander and staff attended and met with members of the Department and Community. The category of Robbery has increased 75% from last year. As of recently, we have 37 Robberies (2017 YTD) compared to 21 (2016 YTD). Part of the reason for the increase is the rise of Plain Thefts (shoplift) were suspects struggled/took property by force, which turned the crime from a theft to an Estes Robbery. Please let others know of the crime activity that is occurring in the area and report suspicious activity. NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH EVENTS: 17A23 s Basic Car Neighborhood Watch meeting for November and December is cancelled for the holidays. I wish everyone a pleasant and safe holiday season. The next Basic Car 17A23 Neighborhood Watch Meeting is Thursday, January 25, 2018. CRIME PREVENTION TIPS AND INFORMATION: The holiday season is here and I encourage everyone to please be aware of their surroundings when shopping or visiting the ATM machines. This is the time of the year when criminals prey upon unsuspecting citizens. Criminals look for victims that are not paying attention to others and avoid eye contact. I would suggest that if you would need to visit an ATM, please do so during daylight hours, and visit one that has good foot traffic. If it is late use an ATM inside a somewhat busy supermarket, or go to your nearest police station. The LAPD police stations never close and ATM machines are always located near the front desk. The most recent 4-week map shows about a dozen hits with activity consistent with knock-knock burglaries. Most of these are still occurring during the traditional Monday- Friday daytime hours, but also, there were a couple of incidents that happened later into the evening and sometimes even on weekends. As in most cases the suspects will first door knock the home to ensure no one is inside. Money, jewelry, firearms and electronics continue to be the most common items taken
Please continue to be vigilant to foot traffic and door-to-door solicitation activity, and remind your neighbors to take the time to assess activity on the block as they come and go from the home. Suspicious activity which is deemed to be likely criminal in nature should be reported to LAPD dispatch. CRIME PREVENTION TIPS AND INFORMATION: Road Rage: A driver may cut you off and nearly cause an accident, but avoid taking matters into your own hands. Road rage can result in a six-month suspension of your driver s license (first offense) and an order to complete a road rage course, and could even land you in jail. Or you could be charged with assault with a deadly weapon, and face up to four years in prison and $ 10,000 fine. (VC 13210; PC 245(a)) Avoid engaging other drivers. Put as much distance between you and the other driver as possible and avoid making eye contact. Never pull off the roadway to confront another driver. Stay calm and give yourself ample time to get to where you are going. These numbers reflect the number of crimes which occurred in Basic Car 17A49 only. We are up 39% from last year with 163 burglaries year-to-date. Suspects are knocking on victim s front door. If no one answers, they go to the rear of the residents and either smash or force the rear door or sliding glass window. If someone knocks on your door, do not open it. Instead, in a strong voice tell them, No thanks. Monitor what they do after that. If they appear to be looking around, call 9-1-1. Please pay attention to cars and people in your neighborhood. If you see a suspicious vehicle, write the license plate down (without placing yourself in danger). If you see anyone peering in windows or cars, call 9-1-1. This is a crime in progress.

Vehicles being broken into has increased significantly. Most of the crimes are occurring on Sundays, Wednesdays and Thursdays during the mid-afternoon hours and into the early morning hours. Our Violent Crime totals are up 25.2%, due to Robbery up 54.3% (71 vs. 46) and Aggravated Assault up 6.5% (66 vs. 62). Our Property Crime is down -5.5%, with three areas we remain up: Burglary up 0.7% (151 vs. 150), Grand Theft Auto up 11.2% (109 vs. 98), and Burglary Theft from Vehicle up 27.4% (270 vs. 212). Year-to-date we are down -2.4% for our total Part-I crimes. Most of our Theft and Estes Robbery is at the Northridge Fashion Center, The Ulta Store and Target Store. CRIME PREVENTION INFORMATION AND TIPS: It is important to remain vigilant during the upcoming Holiday season. Be aware of solicitors that go door to door offering their services. While some solicitors are legitimate, there are those who use this technique to case homes for possible future break-ins. There are also those who pose as city workers to commit distraction burglaries. Make sure you answer the door or talk through the door making your presence known. Do not let unknown people inside your house and always have your phone handy to call police if need be.
