Welcome to the fifth edition of our yacht design newsletter. The last 12 months have been a year of investment, consolidation and cautious optimism. Rising enquiry levels have pointed to the green shoots of a recovery taking hold and while progress towards that has been at a cautious rate BMT Nigel Gee has invested in a number of areas throughout the year to further strengthen the services we offer to our clients and the insight we can bring to their projects. Our new relationship with Ruea Yachts is one such example and with our support we anticipate the development of this new builder bringing their 60m, designed in partnership with Design Unlimited, to market. Working with the same studio we have also developed an exciting 40m catamaran which brings to the yacht arena our 23 year experience in designing some of the world s largest and most advanced high speed commercial catamarans. This design is now part of the Sunreef yachts portfolio Europe s premier catamaran yacht builder. Finally our investment in research and development continues, this year with focus on quantifying the impacts of recently enforced and future regulations on large yachts. The results of this research have allowed us to adjust our design methods to ensure the insight we bring incorporates the needs of tomorrow and consolidate our larger projects such as the PA107 project with Oceanco. BMT develop next generation for Oceanco During 2009 BMT Nigel Gee began work with Oceanco, the premier Dutch custom yacht builder, on their next generation of yacht. Having been hugely successful with their current LY2 based 700 platform, Oceanco selected BMT to begin development of their next generation which will be fully SOLAS compliant for up to 36 guests. The 110m-120m platform, with code name PA107, has been conceived with a focus on efficiency and environmental aspects incorporating a synergy of optimised hydrodynamics, hybrid propulsion system and energy efficient technologies. The design features a hybrid diesel mechanical / diesel electric propulsion system with the MTU 4000 series engine at its heart. Twin CPP s can be driven either by full electric propulsion or in a diesel mechanical mode, in addition to a hybrid mode where the electric propulsion motors can be used as generators to supply the hotel loads negating the need to run auxiliary generators. A full series of model tests were undertaken at MARIN as part of the hull optimisation process resulting in a top speed of 21 knots with a cruise speed of 18 knots and range of over 6000 miles at 16 knots. In addition to conforming with the requirements of SOLAS, and the new Passenger Yacht Code, the design is fully compliant with the Maritime Labour Convention, MARPOL 12A for the protection of oil fuel bunker tanks, features no sea water ballast and utilises waste heat recovery systems integrated with a host of other green technologies. With styling by the world s leading design studios the PA107 design is set to break new ground. To find out more visit www.oceancoyacht.com 2 13M SOLAS lifeboat tenders During early 2010 the last of our 13m superyacht lifeboat tenders was delivered having undergone final sea trials and SOLAS certification. Constructed by Southampton Yacht Services (SYS) this ground breaking vessel incorporates the full luxury of a lavishly appointed high speed super yacht tender together with full SOLAS certification as a lifeboat for up to 51 passengers. BMT Nigel Gee provided the complete engineering design package including the naval architecture, model testing, structural, mechanical and outfit design including full detailed production level design. Styling of the tender was carried out by Patrick Banfield of Allseas Design Ltd. The design of this vessel presented some unique challenges, particularly with regard to the structure. With the need to reduce the structural weight of the vessel and work within a predefined all up weight to limit davit and hook loads, the main challenges arose from the loads imposed by the certification requirements which included swing-slam and drop tests. BMT Nigel Gee designed a state of the art advanced composite structure that was engineered to deform under these tests and absorb as much of the energy as possible. Additional challenges were faced in incorporating SOLAS safety requirements within an aesthetically acceptable design. BMT Nigel Gee and SYS worked closely with Lloyds Register to establish equivalent levels of safety where exact SOLAS requirements could not be met.

Sunreef 40m Catamaran During the spring of 2010 BMT Nigel Gee and Design Unlimited announced their collaboration on the development of an exciting 40 metre powered catamaran. The partnership brings together BMT s extensive experience in the naval architecture and engineering of high speed catamarans with the versatile interior and exterior design skills of Design Unlimited. We are pleased to announce an agreement with Sunreef, the premier builder of custom catamarans based in Gdansk, Poland, to adopt the design within their portfolio on an exclusive basis. Founded in 2000 by Francis and Nicolas Lapp, Sunreef Yachts has launched more than 50 yachts by 2010 demonstrating considerable innovation and expertise in both composite and aluminium construction. This 500 GRT design is offered with a number of propulsion options, depending on the required performance and in each case features a proven hull form from BMT s comprehensive portfolio of catamaran designs. The baseline option features twin 1,432kW diesel engines to give a top speed of 20 knots and a range of 2,600nm. A faster model offers a 32 knot top speed using twin diesels to drive waterjets whilst for those requiring even higher performance speeds of over 40 knots can be achieved with quad diesel or combined gas turbines and diesel installations The catamaran platform is ideally suited to the moderately sized, medium to high speed yacht. Yachts on the 500 GRT limit are always pushing the boundaries of available space, but with a beam of 11.8m the BMT design offers a substantially greater amount of accommodation compared to a conventional yacht of the same length. The additional beam is put to good use providing extensive interior spaces capable of adaptation for a wide variety of uses and entertainment options. The accommodation spans three decks with the lower deck being split across the two demi-hulls. This lower deck includes crew accommodation to port with cabins for six crew, the crew mess and galley, the laundry area and separate access to the foredeck. The starboard hull contains two large, well appointed, en-suite VIP cabins with the option to convert them into a single large VIP or master suite. The main deck features two further en-suite VIP cabins and a gym with side-opening terrace for an indoor/outdoor workout. There is also a large, fully-equipped galley. The full-beam saloon occupies the aft half of the main deck with inside/ outside dining options for 12, plus a bar, large comfortable lounging areas and circular sliding doors giving access onto the aft sundeck. This sundeck incorporates a feature pool which can also be accessed from the aft hull swim platforms. The upper deck is given over mostly to the owner s accommodation. A massive owner s suite incorporates an aft facing central bed which takes in the full width aft view, together with a walk-in dressing/bathroom and large office/ study. There is also an option for a private sky lounge. This deck also houses a large en-suite captain s cabin which has private access to the spacious wheelhouse. The exterior of the yacht is well planned with generous sunbathing and outdoor seating spaces. The main deck has a large foredeck which houses two 6-metre tenders together with a crane and there is also a lower garage for jet skis and water sports equipment. BMT teams with Ruea Yachts Ruea Yachts, the recently launched superyacht newbuild division of Thailandbased Yacht Solutions, has announced details of its first design; a 60m (197ft) luxury motoryacht. Designed in partnership with leading naval architects BMT Nigel Gee and interior designers / stylists Design Unlimited, this new yacht has been created as an ideal craft for tropical cruising with extensive covered external areas offering plenty of shade and the ability to cover large distances between refuelling stops. At her cruising speed of 12 knots she has a range of nearly 5,000 nautical miles, and can achieve 16 knots when required. Based on a proven 60m displacement steel hull combined with an aluminium superstructure the yacht is Lloyd s Certified and built to the MCA Large Yacht Code LY2 with a gross tonnage of 1240 GRT. The accommodation is designed for an owner plus 10 guests, and is spread over four of the six decks. The upper deck is dedicated to the owner with a forwardlooking stateroom balanced by a private saloon facing aft on to an open deck with Jacuzzi. In between sit the spacious ensuite bathroom, two lobbies and a sauna. Five double guest suites are located on the main and lower decks, including one with a balcony. The forward part of the lower deck has accommodation for 14 crew in seven cabins together with crew mess and galley. The Captain s cabin and office are located on the wheel house deck, between the main and upper decks. Entertainment and public spaces include a sun deck with bar above the owner s deck, and on the wheel house deck a spacious upper lounge leads out onto an aft deck complete with a 3.5m mini pool. The main deck hosts the main saloon and dining areas, and also a dedicated cinema, while a gym is located on the lower deck. The lower deck also has garaging aft for tenders and jet skis, along with storage for scuba gear and other water sports equipment. A fold-out beach area sits right at the stern, complete with wet bar. Finally a tank deck houses the engines and other electro-mechanical equipment, along with the cold stores and the laundry, and there is the option of a helicopter touchpad on the bow. Ruea Yachts Managing Director Gareth Twist said he was delighted to be unveiling the first design concept for the fresh and energetic new brand that rethought traditional marine architecture and delivered an innovative, stylish and high-tech superyacht at a highly competitive cost due to the company s base in Thailand. The combination of cutting edge design and architecture, courtesy of our European partners Design Unlimited and BMT Nigel Gee, and the superb Thai craftsmen we have at our shipyard in Bangkok we believe will be an enticing proposition for superyacht aficionados, he continued. They will discover not only a stunning vessel, but one that is extremely affordable when compared to western yards without compromising on quality. The design is now being actively marketed in Asia and Europe. For further details visit www.rueayachts.com 5

Large Yacht Research Project To maintain a position as a provider of innovative solutions BMT Nigel Gee runs an applied and blue-sky research programme that seeks solutions for current issues and challenges, thereby anticipating the needs of its clients. Recently completed is the Large Yacht Research Grant, which set out to quantify the impacts of the changes taking place in the regulatory regime with specific focus on yachts of over 3000 GRT and carrying more than 12 passengers. Quantified analysis has been undertaken into the impacts of the Maritime Labour Convention, Harmonised Probabilistic Stability, MARPOL Regulation 12A for the protection of fuel oil tanks, Ballast Water Convention, MARPOL Emissions Regulations and Safe Return to Port. Additionally the research relating to the MLC has been extended to yachts of all sizes. This has facilitated BMT s involvement with the industry working group currently lobbying the International Labour Organisation with the results of BMT s research playing a direct role. Critically the results of BMT Nigel Gee s research on these topics has enabled the company to refine its own designs and procedures and offer these insights to present and future clients in allowing them to engineer the necessary adjustments into their designs at the earliest stages of a new project. Results of the research will be presented later in 2010 and be made available shortly after on www.bmtyachts.com Current Projects 110m Diesel Motor Yacht Class Design 95m Diesel Motor Yacht Detail Design 85m Diesel Motor Yacht Detail Design Cakewalk Hits The Water In early August Derecktor Shipyards launched the 85.6 meter (281 ft) motor yacht CAKEWALK, the largest yacht (by volume) ever built in the United States. 75m Diesel Motor Yacht Concept Design 74m Diesel Motor Yacht Full Design BMT Nigel Gee have provided extensive detailed engineering design services to this stunning Tim Heywood design.
